The USDA Small Business Innovation Research Program: Vision, challenge, and opportunities
Bill Goldner describes the USDA’s Small Business Innovation research Program. This competitive funding program, authorized by Congress in 1982, stimulates and facilitates R&D by US-owned and -operated for-profit small businesses (<500 employees). All executive branch departments with extramural research budgets exceeding $100 million are directed by legislation to provide a 2.5% set-aside to fund SBIR

Modified Masson-Goldner stain and immunohistochemistry of pulmonary arteriopathy and venopathy.
<p>A to C show pulmonary muscular arteries from Case 17 with intimal fibrotic changes and moderate medial thickening. (A) Modified Masson-Goldner stain (Elastica Masson stain) shows the complicated arrangement of collagen (green), elastin (dark-purple) and spindle cells (red) within the intima. (B) Numerous α-smooth muscle actin (SMA) positive cells are recognized in the thickened intima and media in the artery. (C) Factor VIII is negative within the intima and media. Only endothelial cells are positive for factor VIII. D to F show pulmonary venules from Case 10 with intimal alterations. (D) Modified Masson-Goldner stain show that the neointima of venopathy is rich in collagen (green). (E) α-SMA-positive cells can be seen in the media and thin intima; however, the number of the cells is less than that seen in pulmonary arteriopathy. (F) Factor VIII is only positive in the endothelial cells. (Scale bars show 100 μm)</p
High-resolution optical spectroscopy of europium nitrate hexahydrate crystals
We report the optical study of europium nitrate hexahydrate crystals Eu(NO3)⋅3 6H2O and their deuterated version Eu(NO3)⋅3 6D2O conducted at 50 mK. The crystals show sub-GHz inhomogeneous linewidths for the F07↔5D0 transition and optical coherence times up to 136 μs for the non-deuterated crystal and 750 μs for the deuterated one. In addition, using the spectral hole burning technique, the hyperfine splittings in the absence of an external field have been estimated for the ground and optical levels. These results suggest that rare-earth nitrate crystals could represent a promising class of materials for quantum information applications as well as for fundamental physics experiments requiring narrow optical transitions and good coherence properties
MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
This type of urban development, usually with huge dimensions, can also host cultural activities such as shows and sports competitions, depending on its facilities, offering shared use of different activities with distinct functioning characteristics. Being a huge facility, these centers can attract a considerable number of people during seasonal events, which frequently causes undesirable impacts on the transportation system and on traffic in the influence area. This dissertation studies event centers as Trip Generation Hubs # TGH - evaluating the users# trip patterns and the parameters to assess parking space requirements for the operation of this type of development. The study examines the Blumenau Events Center called Parque Vila Germânica, which was built between 1960 and 1980 and refurbished in 2006, when it had its built area, used for events, enlarged to 26.000 square meters. Data collection was conducted during a major event, a textile business fair, through forms distributed on-site to the population gathered in the Event Center, which revealed the user profile and trip characteristics. Field surveys were performed to collect detailed information regarding the available parking facilities, on-street and off-street, to identify parking accumulation, parking duration and vehicle turnover in the parking spots. The data allowed identifying the influence area and the trip rate generated by the event, as well as advancing a proposal for calculating the number of parking spots required by event centers, based on the relationship between maximum parking accumulation and daily demand of vehicles attracted to the area
