Remote sensing applications for insurance: A predictive model for pasture yield in the presence of systemic weather

No full text
A robust predictive model for crop yield is essential for designing a commercially viable index-based insurance policy. Index-based insurance for crops is still at a relatively infant stage, and more research and development is needed in order to address a main limitation, which is referred to as basis risk. Traditionally, ground weather station measurements have been the most common approach used in weather indices, and this approach has often led to high levels of basis risk. Recent advances in satellite-based remote sensing provide new opportunities to use publicly available and transparent “big data,” to potentially make index-based insurance policies more relevant by reducing basis risk. This is the first article to provide a comprehensive comparison of 13 pasture production indices (PPIs), including those developed based on satellite-derived vegetation and biophysical parameter indices using data products from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). A validation protocol is established, and a unique dataset covering the period 2002 to 2016 from a network of pasture clip sites in the province of Alberta, Canada, is used to demonstrate new applications for insurance based on remote sensing–derived data. The results of the satellite-derived PPIs are compared to PPIs based on ground weather station data as benchmarks, which to date are the most common design for index-based insurance. Overall, the satellite-based indices report higher correlations with the ground truth forage yield data compared to the weather station PPIs. As an example, in 2015 and 2016 the best performing satellite-based PPIs produced correlations close to 90%. When considering the whole sample period, the highest overall average correlation is 62.0% for the biophysical parameter PPI based on FPAR 500-m MODIS, and the lowest overall average correlation is 43.8% for the vegetation PPI based on EVI 250-m MODIS. Comparatively, the highest correlation reported for the weather station indices is for precipitation, at 12.51%. Other predictive models based on principal component analysis and shrinkage methods (such as lasso, ridge regression, and elastic net) are considered to address the issues of variable selection and dimension reduction in insurance design. This research makes an important contribution to the field of actuarial science and insurance, because it highlights potential new opportunities for insurance design and predictive analytics using large and comprehensive satellite datasets that remain relatively unexplored to date in insurance practice. Though forage is used as the example here, the research could be extended to other crops, and other areas in the property and casualty sector, including for fire and flood

After the Fire Kindle: The Portrayal of Iban Dayak Woman and Ancestral Forest in West Kalimantan

No full text
After the Fire Kindle is a creative work based on an environmental conflict that occurred in the village of Semunying Jaya and involved Iban Dayak women as victims. The conflict burst over the burning of forests for the benefit of a private company that is developing palm oil plantations. Iban Dayak women have lost their ancestral forest and their homes as a result of palm oil plantations. Using ecofeminism as a background theory, the oppression of women and nature caused by patriarchal culture will be depicted. As a result, it portrays an oppressed Iban Dayak woman and ancestral forest in West Kalimantan. The author applies the study in After the Fire Kindle short story to allow readers will be concerned about what is happening to nature and women’s right to live in the future. Library study and interviews with Dayak women provide the author to portray the characteristics of the main character, Sylvana, and how she fights for the equality she and nature deserve from the control of men's culture. Through the characters of Sylvana, Arion, and Bakena, oppressions such as hierarchy, dualism, and domination are well depicted

Case description: A healthy 6-year-old 28.5-kg (62.7-lb) spayed female Boxer undergoing surgical repair of a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament was inadvertently administered an overdose of morphine (1.3 mg/kg [0.59 mg/lb]) via subarachnoid injection. Clinical findings: 50 minutes after administration of the overdose, mild multifocal myoclonic contractions became apparent at the level of the tail; the contractions migrated cranially and progressively increased in intensity and frequency during completion of the surgery. Treatment and outcome: The myoclonic contractions were refractory to treatment with midazolam, naloxone, phenobarbital, and pentobarbital; only atracurium (0.1 mg/kg [0.045 mg/lb], IV) was effective in controlling the movements. The dog developed hypertension, dysphoria, hyperthermia, and hypercapnia. The dog remained anesthetized and ventilated mechanically; treatments included continuous rate IV infusions of propofol (1 mg/kg/h [0.45 mg/lb/h]), diazepam (0.25 mg/kg/h [0.11 mg/lb/h]), atracurium (0.1 to 0.3 mg/kg/h [0.045 to 0.14 mg/lb/h]), and naloxone (0.02 mg/kg/h [0.009 mg/lb/h]). Twenty-two hours after the overdose, the myoclonus was no longer present, and the dog was able to ventilate without mechanical assistance. The dog remained sedated until 60 hours after the overdose, at which time its mentation improved, including recognition of caregivers and response to voice commands. No neurologic abnormalities were detectable at discharge (approx 68 hours after the overdose) or at a recheck evaluation 1 week later. Clinical relevance: Although intrathecal administration of an overdose of morphine can be associated with major and potentially fatal complications, it is possible that affected dogs can completely recover with immediate treatment and extensive supportive care

From fairies to SimMan:Tolkien and realism in simulation

No full text
Background: There is a paucity of empirical and theoretical literature on reality and realism in simulation-based learning. Methods: This article makes an original contribution to the body of literature by using the theoretical conceptualizations of reality described by Dieckmann et al. in simulation and by the fantasy author and scholar J.R.R.Tolkien to challenge and develop our understanding of reality in simulation. This article reports a qualitative research study that reveals the perceptions of realism in simulation-based medical education. Results: A significant finding was the importance participants placed on realism in their motivation to participate in simulation. Participants descriptions of realism were consistent with the domains of physical, semantic and phenomenological realism and played an important role in their intention to participate in simulation-based learning. The data also revealed that while lapses in physical realism were tolerated, lapses in semantic realism were very poorly tolerated. In addition, when there was inconsistency within the secondary reality as described by Tolkien, this resulted in a breakdown of suspension of disbelief. Conclusions: A deeper understanding of these factors will inform course designers as they consider the processes of simulation-based learning and as they seek robust evidence for its effectiveness. Developing understanding of realism for medical simulation can help course designers and teachers make best use of resources by focussing on the domains of realism that have most impact on learners.</p

Cambrian megascopic alga-like forms accompanying Coraillcyathida In quartzite beds of Lysa Gora

No full text
In the years 1974-1978, the author found algae in rocks bearing a corallicyathid fauna (order Corallicyathida Sedlak, 1975) outcropping on Łysa Góra Mt. in Świętokrzyskie Mountains (= Holy Cross Mts), Central Poland. They belong to the class Rhodophyta and resemble representatives of Erbina Korde, 1973, and of Epiphyton Bornemann, 1886, except for their much larger size. Some of them are assigned to the genus Erbina, which gives further support to the Early Cambrian age of the rocks bearing them, suggested by the author with reference to Corallicyathida

SPECIFICITY OF SYNTACTIC CONSTRUCTIONS WITH FOREIGN LANGUAGE INFORMATION IN THE NOVEL V. LYSA “IVAN I CHORNA PANTERA”

The article deals with complex syntactic constructions with samples of a foreign language presented in the text of V. Lys's novel Ivan and the Black Panther. First of all, the units marked by syncretism in the ways and methods of transmitting foreign language information were analyzed. The study revealed that the author experiments not only with the actual methods of reproducing someone else's speech, but also with the structure of the part of syntactic constructions that indicates the author of “other people's” thoughts. In particular, this is manifested in the ellipsis of the author's words to one or more words, which likens them to remarks in a dramatic work. Ultimately, this contextual incompleteness of these elements of the analyzed syntactic constructions contributes to the dynamism of the narrative. The accumulation of dialogic or polylogic replicas within a single paragraph creates a cinematic effect, in which the presence of the writer is minimized, and the reader becomes a witness or an invisible participant in the exchange of information. Another feature of V. Lys's idiom is manifested in the combination of different ways of conveying someone else's speech, accompanied by the use of alternative punctuation marks to traditional ones, which frame the elements of the studied syntactic constructions. Such units often serve as a means of characterizing, first of all, the protagonist of the work, Ivan, a man with a special mentality who represents the world around him without canons, clear boundaries and limits of the real. The results of V. Lys's search for the most effective methods of fixing foreign language expressions are the following features of his individual authorial style
