No full textI am delighted to have found this little paperback in a favorite bookshop in Paris. I look forward to using it myself. It brings two of his best illustrators to a pupil's book of Florian's fables. The colored illustrations are not the only help for those of us trying to understand a sometimes difficult author. There are vocabulary notes, comments, and -- especially -- a short discussion of each fable's moral. These discussions are pleasantly candid, as in this comment on "La taupe et les lapins": "La fable de Florian est peut-être moins claire qu'elle n'y paraȋt" (55). No full textHere is a small edition, 3¼" x 5¼," of 162 pages. It seems to be identical to Bodemann #274, published by the same people two years earlier. As Bodemann notes in a very short description, the illustrations come as three panels per page. One panel often represents two fables. My favorites among these very small illustrations are "The Blind and the Lame" (18); "Two Bachelors" (48); "Owl and Pigeon" (83); and "Ass and Flute" (111). Do not miss the gigantic crocodile on 120! Highlights of the Magic Florian Goebel Telescopes in the Study of Active Galactic Nuclei
No full textThe MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) Florian Goebel telescopes are a system of two Cherenkov telescopes located on the Canary island of La Palma (Spain), at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, which have been operating in stereo mode since 2009. Their low energy threshold (down to 15 GeV) allows the investigation of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) in the very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray range with a sensitivity up to the redshift limit of the existing IACT (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes) systems. The MAGIC telescopes discovered 36 extragalactic objects emitting VHE gamma-rays and performed comprehensive studies of galaxies and their AGNs, also in a multi-wavelength (MWL) and multi-messenger (MM) context, expanding the knowledge of our Universe. Identification of PpoA fromAspergillus nidulansas a Fusion Protein of a Fatty Acid Heme Dioxygenase/Peroxidase and a Cytochrome P450
No full textThe homothallic ascomycete Aspergillus nidulans serves as model organism for filamentous fungi because of its ability to propagate with both asexual and sexual life cycles, and fatty acid-derived substances regulate the balance between both cycles. These so-called psi (precocious sexual inducer) factors are produced by psi factor-producing oxygenases (Ppo enzymes). Bioinformatic analysis predicted the presence of two different heme domains in Ppo proteins: in the N-terminal region, a fatty acid heme dioxygenase/peroxidase domain is predicted, whereas in the C-terminal region, a P450 heme thiolate domain is predicted. To analyze the reaction catalyzed by Ppo enzymes, PpoA was expressed in Escherichia coli as an active enzyme. The protein was purified by 62-fold and identified as a homotetrameric ferric heme protein that metabolizes mono-as well as polyunsaturated C-16 and C-18 fatty acids at pH similar to 7.25. The presence of thiolate-ligated heme was confirmed on the basis of sequence alignments and the appearance of a characteristic 450 nm CO-binding spectrum. Studies on its reaction mechanism revealed that PpoA uses different heme domains to catalyze two separate reactions. Within the heme peroxidase domain, linoleic acid is oxidized to (8R)-hydroperoxyoctadecadienoic acid by abstracting a H-atom from C-8 of the fatty acid, yielding a carbon-centered radical that reacts with molecular dioxygen. In the second reaction step, 8-hydroperoxyoctadecadienoic acid is isomerized within the P450 heme thiolate domain to 5,8-dihydroxyoctadecadienoic acid. We identify PpoA as a bifunctional P450 fusion protein that uses a previously unknown reaction mechanism for forming psi factors.German Research Foundation (IRTG 1422). [IRTG 1422

Dr. Bieber has worked in Belgrade (Serbia) and Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) for the European Centre for Minority Issues and has taught at the Central European University, at the University of Sarajevo and at the University of Bologna. He is also the author of a book about Serbian nationalism, entitled Nationalism in Serbia from the Death of Tito to the Fall of Milosevic (Muenster: Lit Verlag, 2005, in German), and another book, Post-War Bosnia: Ethnic Structure, Inequality and Governance of the Public Sector (London: Palgrave, 2006). The correspondence from 1903 to 1935 includes 346 units and exploits 6 sources: the copies of letters done by Jaroslav Staněk, handwritten letters archived in Moravian Museum in Brno and LA PNP, Prague, letters addressed to Josef Florian as edited by Jiří Olič and hand-written originals possessed by two private owners. The edition of the collected letters is accompanied by a list of letters, an editorial note and translations of excerpts which are not in Czech. An accompanying study deals with the editorial history of these collected letters, the relationship of Jakup Deml and Josef Florian in the time of their collaboration and provides an outline of the future research tasks regarding this edition.
