    Phenotiki: an open software and hardware platform for affordable and easy image-based phenotyping of rosette-shaped plants

    Phenotyping is important to understand plant biology, but current solutions are costly, not versatile or are difficult to deploy. To solve this problem, we present Phenotiki, an affordable system for plant phenotyping that, relying on off-the-shelf parts, provides an easy to install and maintain platform, offering an out-of-box experience for a well-established phenotyping need: imaging rosette-shaped plants. The accompanying software (with available source code) processes data originating from our device seamlessly and automatically. Our software relies on machine learning to devise robust algorithms, and includes an automated leaf count obtained from 2D images without the need of depth (3D). Our affordable device (~€200) can be deployed in growth chambers or greenhouse to acquire optical 2D images of approximately up to 60 adult Arabidopsis rosettes concurrently. Data from the device are processed remotely on a workstation or via a cloud application (based on CyVerse). In this paper, we present a proof-of-concept validation experiment on top-view images of 24 Arabidopsis plants in a combination of genotypes that has not been compared previously. Phenotypic analysis with respect to morphology, growth, color and leaf count has not been performed comprehensively before now. We confirm the findings of others on some of the extracted traits, showing that we can phenotype at reduced cost. We also perform extensive validations with external measurements and with higher fidelity equipment, and find no loss in statistical accuracy when we use the affordable setting that we propose.     Thoracic complications from retained abdominal gallstones after laparoscopic cholecystectomy: is it always mandatory a thoracic approach?

    BACKGROUND: Thoracic complications from retained abdominal gallstones are quite rare and the incidence rate ranges between 0.08\% and 0.3\%. Diagnosis and treatment of these complications are challenging due to the uncommon presentations and the debated role of the thoracic approach. This review of all cases reported in literature aims to discuss the best practice of this rare condition. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed for articles from January 1993 to May 2019 using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, ScienceDirect. The following mesh-words were used: 'cholelithopthysis', 'thoracic', 'gallstones' 'retained', and 'spilled'. All cases of thoracic complications from retained gallstones after laparoscopic cholecystectomy were extrapolated. RESULTS: Twenty-four patients were included in this study. The most common symptoms were fever, hemoptysis and lithoptysis. Symptoms after laparoscopic cholecystectomy were presented after a mean time of 9.8±\pm14.2 months (range from one week to 60 months). Delayed diagnosis was found in fourteen patients (58.4.\%). Only four subjects were treated successfully with antibiotic therapy alone (16.7\%), whereas 20 patients needed surgery or interventional radiology (83.3\%). Seven patients (29.2\%) were successfully managed with an abdominal approach. Three patients were managed using thoracentesis, thoracoscopic-thoracotomic drainage (12.5\%). Right lung decortication and pulmonary wedge resections were necessary for ten patients (41.6\%). CONCLUSION: Clinicians always must inquire about the previous cholecystectomy for cholelithiasis related diseases in all patients suffering from recurrent right-sided pleural/lung affections, to improve diagnostic delay. The escalated approach must be performed: empirical antimicrobial therapy followed by targeted therapy as soon as microbiological data are available; afterwards, abdominal surgery is effective in approximately 30\% of patients while the remaining patients have to be submitted to a thoracic approach

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Multifocality in patients treated for papillary Thyroid Carcinoma: a preliminary analysis of related risk factors

    Background Multifocality is usually detected afterwards surgery for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) and has been reported in 18-87% of PTC. Methods This is a retrospective single-center study involving a series of 238 patients that underwent thyroidectomy or lobectomy after preoperative fine needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis of Thyr 5 or Thyr 6, according to Bethesda classification, from January 2015 to December 2019 at the General Surgery Unit of the University - Hospital of Parma. We divided patients into two main groups: patients with multifocal papillary thyroid cancer at postoperative diagnosis and patients with unifocal papillary thyroid cancer. The aim of the study is to identify demographic or preoperative radiological risk factors for the presence of multifocal PTC and to verify the presence of cyto-histological features of greater aggressiveness in multifocal tumors than in unifocal ones. Results Out of our sample, 176 patients were females (73,9%) and 62 males (26,1%) with a mean age of 50,45 ±14,41. Preoperative cytological diagnosis resulted Thyr 5 in 47 cases (19,7%) and Thyr 6 in 191 cases (80,3%). Multifocal cancer was reported in 35,8% of the females and in 32,3% of the males. Older age was significatively related to the presence of multifocal papillary carcinoma (p<0.05). Preoperative bilateral thyroid nodules were associated with a higher finding of multifocal disease at histological examination (p<0.05). The presence of multifocal disease was related with a higher soft tissue invasion at the histological specimen (p<0.05).  Tumor size was not related to multifocal PTC in our study. Conclusions Older age of patient and preoperative bilateral thyroid nodules are significantly associated to multifocal thyroid cancer. In add to this, multifocal disease is related to higher finding of perithyroidal tissue invasion at histological exam. In case of predictive factors for multifocal PTC, surgeons should take total/near-total thyroidectomy always into consideration
