The Well-Being of Gifted Students: What Does the Research Say? A Systematic Literature Review
The purpose of this article is to review recent literature on the subjective well-being of gifted and talented students and to consider its practical implications. Fifteen articles were reviewed, published between 2005 and 2022, and selected according to a systematic protocol from two widely used online databases. The analysis showed that it could not be clearly stated whether giftedness is a risk or a protective factor for gifted and talented children’s and adolescents’ subjective well-being. Simultaneously, the research results published in most of the analyzed articles did not indicate statistically significant differences between the sense of subjective well-being and psychological well-being of gifted and talented students compared to average-ability students. Studies on the well-being of gifted children and young people employ a number of scales relating to different areas of human psychophysical functioning, i.e.: mood, stress, sense of self-efficacy, interests, sense of loneliness, sense of humor, atmosphere in school, which allows a holistic view of the analyzed phenomenon.Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przegląd badań naukowych dotyczących problematyki dobrostanu (well-being) uzdolnionych dzieci i młodzieży. Przyjęto procedurę przeglądu systematycznego w oparciu o protokół Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (Page et al. 2021). Analizie poddano 15 artykułów opublikowanych w latach 2005–2022 w recenzowanych czasopismach naukowych.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The Concept of ‘Giftedness’ in English and Polish Students’ Narratives. A Cognitive Approach
The purpose of this publication is to show how students from Poland and England defineand understand the concept of ‘giftedness’. The analyses result from the author’s research conducted over the years 2013-2016. In the interviews, the students presented their own associations with the matter. Materials collected from 30 respondents, including 15 students from Śląski University and from a Lublin University and 15 students from Oxford University, showed that the concept of ‘giftedness’ is understood by Polish students identically to English students. ‘Giftedness’ was definedby a series of connotations: ‘creativity’, ‘talent’, ‘ability to do something’, ‘predisposition’, and ‘organization of thinking’
Diagnoza i ewaluacja rozwiązań systemowych w zakresie kształcenia uczniów zdolnych na przykładzie Polski i Anglii : studium komparatystyczne
For many years a steady growth of interest in the problems of gifted and talented individuals
has been observed. Social demand for the use of the potentials o f these people is, firstly, a
consequence of changes and technological progress, globalization processes (Perssona, 2012),
urbanization and modernization, which increasingly emphasize the role of gifted people in shaping
the post-modern societies (Dyrda, 2012). Secondly, a gifted student is a very colorful character and
very valuable personality from the educational and psychological viewpoint, which I also tried to
show in the conducted analysis. Thirdly, in many of today's job advertisements, employers among
the candidates for the job are looking for gifted individuals, those outstanding from the crowd. In
other words, nonconformists with a positive tinge, largely motivated by internal factors. We can
therefore say that the market has been intensified by increased international economic competition
which has led to a kind of war for gifted and talented individuals. Companies see their future
competitiveness as dependent of a small number of highly gifted people, drawn from a global pool
(Brown, Tannock, 2009, source: Smith, 2014, p. 209). It is worth mention that today's gifted
students are tomorrow's social, intellectual leaders of economy and culture, and their development
can not be left to a chance (Eyre 2009, p. 1048,1051).
Therefore, at present in practically all developing countries, including Poland and England,
there began to emphasize that the issue of skills and talents should belong to some of the important
areas of theory and practice of school, both because of the social, and educational functionality of
the issue. Also the recommendations for the European Parliament, drawn up by the Committee on
Culture and Education, contributed to it. They emphasize that no country can afford to waste talent,
to lose the human wealth, no country is so rich to waste talents of its citizens (Cieslikowska 2005 p.

Presented dissertation, focused on the diagnosis and evaluation of system solutions in the field
of gifted education in Poland and England, is part of the research area o f the science of comparative
education with an interdisciplinary approach. In the conducted analyzes, I have tried to reference to
the existing research results of pedagogical, psychological, sociological, as well as historical,
concerning the learning process and supporting gifted students on an international scale. At the
same time, I tried to present the empirical achievements, focused largely on issues of education,
support and operation of gifted students, starting of the family environment, peers and school. The
research processes carried out in this dissertation, as well as their stages, were focused on obtaining
data useful for representatives o f pedagogical sciences.
The dissertation consists of four main parts:
In the first part o f the paper, I analyzed the issues focused on historical and definitional findings
related to key issues concepts such as ability, aptitude, talent, genius, concepts of abilities. I made
also the characteristics of a student gifted from the point of view of humanities and social sciences.
This chapter also focuses on the issue of labeling gifted students, nonconformity, and risky
behaviors as a creative attitude. The first chapter also presents the phenomenon of educational
failure, leading paradoxically to reaching success in life, on examples of commonly known people.
The second part presents a description of the basic mechanisms of functioning of education
systems in England and Poland. It also presents an overview of existing solutions related to the
education of gifted students and a comparison of both systems.
The third part is a presentation of methodological aspects of own researches. This chapter
justifies adopted research procedure and describes the research paradigm, goals, subject of the
research, and research problems.
The fourth part contains of the results of author's researches conducted among Polish and
English teachers and students from England and Poland. This chapter includes an analysis and
interpretation of the empirical material accumulated in the course of research, as well as the
conclusions of the diagnosis and evaluation. The last part contains the summarizing conclusions and
recommending proposals for pedagogical practice.
Reliable analysis of obtained empirical data leads to the conclusion that the two educational
systems give interesting partial solutions that can be used for gifted education. Exchange of
experience and thought out application of solutions operating in both countries, will contribute to
the development and proper functioning of the entire system
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Students free time and promoting healthy lifestyles: example of University of Oxford
Problematyka spędzania czasu wolnego w otoczeniu edukacyjnym w perspektywie zdrowotnej stanowi istotny przedmiot zainteresowania wielu badaczy, m.in. pedagogów, psychologów, socjologów, lekarzy. Temat ten jest szczególnie aktualny i ważny z uwagi na zachodzące przemiany społeczno-kulturowe i niepokojące dane dotyczące zdrowia publicznego z perspektywy globalnej, z których wynika, że aż 70 procent studentów nie uczestniczy w regularnej aktywności fizycznej (Haase i in. 2004; Gordon-Larsen i in. 2004; Roberts i in. 2015). celem artykułu jest ukazanie sposobu spędzania czasu wolnego w perspektywie promowania zdrowego stylu życia studentów University of Oxford
Wkład uzdolnionych jednostek i zachowań niekonformistycznych w cnoty w sferze publicznej
Giftedness and nonconformist behaviour have become a source of great interest in both the public sphere and in educational research. This is related to the fact that nonconformity (as a personality and character trait) has been, and still is, an indispensable element of the creative transformation of societies in the public sphere.1 The paper presents results of research conducted in the years 2014-2016 on the level of nonconformity of gifted students in Poland and England. The research, conducted with the Creative Behaviour Questionnaire III (CBQ III), was undertaken among 30 purposefully selected students from the University of Silesia (Poland) as well as Oxford University (England). By considering both the influence of nonconformists on the transformations taking place in the public sphere, and also the results of my research, I will examine whether nonconformity is a potential source of strength or weakness to the public sphere. In this context nonconformist is a person who does not conform to a generally accepted pattern of thought or action
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
