Diachrony and synchrony in general Linguistics Course (s): From Courses to Editing

This dissertation was developed with the objective of investigating the elaboration of Ferdinand de Saussure, a 20th century linguist who brought a new point of view to Linguistics, allowing Linguistics to become a modern science. First, we present the nineteenth-century studies that were based on the diachronic point of view, through the comparisons of languages, emphasizing the research of Rask, Boop, Grimm and Schleicher. This investigation was important so that we could verify the process of distancing Saussure's ideas from contemporary linguists. Saussure began his work as a comparator by studying the vowel system in the Indo-European in 1878. In that year, he published in Leipzig the Work on the Primitive System of the Indo-European Vowels and On the Absolute Genitive in Sanskrit in 1880. However, the genevan author was ahead of his time, and from his many questions shows us a new perspective on the studies of language: the synchrony. The result of his reflections, in the form of teachings, was only presented to the public after his death with the publication of the Course in General Linguistics, posthumous work, published in 1916, by alumni and colleagues of Ferdinand de Saussure, Bally and Sechehaye. They gathered a few handwritten sheets by the professor himself and notes from the students who attended the three general linguistics courses between 1907 and 1911 at the University of Geneva. Thus, based on a comparative analysis between the students' books that participated in the courses and the edition of the book Course in General Linguistics, we sought to point out the course of elaboration of Saussure's theorization about the conceptual pair diachrony and synchrony. Afterwards, we present the question of order regarding these perspectives on the language, because the editors chose not to follow the same order of presentation of the content of Saussure's classes; so we raised the following hypothesis: was there a distortion of the teachings of the Genevan master due to the fact that the Course in General Linguistics did not follow the order of the courses taught? In order to answer this question in our research, we initially used the Course in General Linguistics and the students' notebooks that attended the master classes, edited by Eisuke Komatsu, George Wolf and Roy Harris, so that we could compare the order of exposure of the concepts of diachrony and synchrony in both the edition and the notebooks of the students. In addition, we present the critical issues that allowed us to verify a new way of looking at the issue of the order of the courses and the edition, mainly the critical edition of Tulio de Mauro. In addition, we explored linguists who spoke about this issue in the CLG in order to verify if there was distortion of the teachings of the master genevan during this course of elaboration.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The present study aimed to understand the place that parole occupies in saussurean studies, both in its conceptual aspect and regarding the accusation of its exclusion. To conduct this investigation, we divided the thesis into five distinct sections. In the first section, we discuss the treatment given to parole within the framework of historical-comparative linguistics, the field in which the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure was trained, with the goal of demonstrating how diverged from contemporary studies of his time concerning parole, focusing on the Neogrammarian proposal developed in the late 19th century. In the second section, we examine research on parole in the Course in General Linguistics, authored by Saussure and published in 1916, three years after his death, by his colleagues Charles Bally and Albert Sechehaye. They compiled teacher’s notes along with those from students who attended his lectures at the University of Geneva between 1907 and 1911. This reading is fundamental, as the accusation that Saussure excluded parole from linguistic studies often arises from this work, which introduced innovative ideas regarding the ways of con-ceiving and investigating human languages. We start from well-known distinction between lan-gue, language, and parole, referenced in Chapter III of the Introduction – The Object of Linguistics – and then move through his distinction between the Linguistics of langue and the Linguistics of parole, discussions that frequently support the claim that excluded parole. Next, we examine other sections of the book to analyze how the issue of parole is interconnected with other elements that make up Saussure’s linguistic theory and how the conceptual network we propose in this study takes shape. In the third section, we focus on Saussure’s theoretical elaboration regarding parole within the framework of the General Linguistics Courses he taught, whose students’ notes consti-tute one of the main sources for the Course in General Linguistics. In this part of our study, we seek to understand how parole was chronologically presented in his lectures at the University of Geneva, allowing us to trace a movement that aligns much more with the construction of a theory of parole than with its exclusion. In the fourth section, we conduct a deeper reading considering the critical apparatus that emerged in response to the various critiques of the book. To this end, we analyze critical inventories of the Course in General Linguistics, focusing on the issue of parole. Since the criticism of Saussure’s exclusion of parole is mainly based on this work, critical edi-tions play a significant role in the discussion of saussurean studies. Finally, in the fifth and last section of this study, we discuss the effects of a reductionist reading of parole based on the Course in General Linguistics and, drawing from our analyses, propose an alternative approach to parole in Saussurean thought—one that considers it as a thread within a conceptual network.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
