    Long-lived triplet exciton harvesting materials are of immense interest for applications in bioimaging, optoelectronics, anticounterfeiting, and sensing. However, achieving persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (pRTP) in metal-free systems remains a significant challenge. Herein, we present purely organic axially chiral aminoboranes (R/S-(BN)2) with enhanced pRTP properties and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). By introducing axial chirality, the dual-core (R/S-(BN)2) system achieves steric-hindrance-caused rigidity, which restricts molecular motions, leading to superior phosphorescence properties. Notably, R-(BN)2 demonstrates a phosphorescence quantum yield (ΦP) of 9.2% (S-(BN)2 : ΦP = 8.7%) and an extended lifetime of 0.9 sec at room temperature, significantly outperforming its mono-core counterpart (BN)1 (ΦP = 3.0% and τP = 0.6 s). Theoretical analysis corroborates the observed improvements, revealing the synergistic role of borylation and axial chirality in stabilizing triplet states. Furthermore, the axially chiral aminoboranes exhibited CPL in dichloromethane solutions with a dissymmetry factor of ~10-3. These findings highlight the potential of axially chiral frameworks in designing efficient metal-free pRTP materials, as demonstrated in the security writing application, further paving the way for their use in bioimaging, anti-counterfeiting technologies, and next-generation organic electronics

    Role of CD36 in Platelet Function

    CD36 is a scavenger receptor expressed on a wide variety of cells including platelets. It recognizes multiple ligands, yet its function on platelets is incompletely characterized. Endothelial cell-derived microparticles (EMP) have been identified in diseases where platelet activation plays a pivotal role. Because EMP express phosphatidylserine (PS) on their surfaces, a CD36 ligand, we hypothesized that MP may bind to platelets via a PS-CD36 interaction. Human platelets were shown to bind EMP by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy. Binding was significantly inhibited by anti-CD36 antibody or using platelets from CD36 null donors. We observed a significant increase in the rate and extent of platelet activation and aggregation to low concentrations of ADP when preincubated with EMP. We thus propose a model where ligands such as EMPs, generated during an acute thrombotic event, could increase the thrombotic response in a CD36 dependent manner. We also showed that CD36 expression levels on platelets were highly variable and correlated well with platelet activation by oxidized LDL. Genotyping with 10 tagged SNPs revealed that the minor alleles of 3 SNPs were significantly associated with expression levels. These data suggest that the variability of CD36 expression on platelets is at least in part genetically determined and together this phenotype-genotype can affect platelet functio

    Examining carer stress in dementia: the role of subtype diagnosis and neuropsychiatric symptoms

    INTRODUCTION: Caring for people with dementia incurs significant stress for carers. Stress has been related to the duration of caring role, the number of weekly hours provided and severity of cognitive impairment. What remains less clear is the impact of neuropsychiatric symptoms and subtype of dementia on carer stress and this study aimed to examine these. METHODS: Dementia carers were recruited for people with a range of dementia subtypes. Carers were interviewed using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory with the Carer Distress Scale. Cognitive fluctuations were assessed using the Dementia Cognitive Fluctuations Scale. All patients were also examined with The Cambridge Assessment for mental disorders in the elderly. RESULTS: Dementia diagnostic subtype, the presence of cognitive fluctuations and some neuropsychiatric symptoms (psychosis and mood disturbance) did predict carer stress (all at p  0.33). Carers of people with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) experienced more stress than those caring for patients with Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Carer stress was associated with higher levels of psychosis, mood disturbances, daytime sleep and cognitive fluctuations in the person with dementia. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified the significant impact on carers of providing care for people with DLB and PDD dementia subtypes and also highlighted the significant impact of providing care for patients with high levels of psychosis, mood disturbances and cognitive fluctuations

    Comparative study of muscle strengthening exercises for treatment of chronic low backache

    Background: Low back pain is a major cause of musculoskeletal disability worldwide. Objectives: To study the outcomes of different muscle strengthening exercises in treatment of low back pain Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty patients in the age group of 20-40 years with mechanical low back pain were randomly divided intotwo groups and instructed to perform two different types of exercises for three months (Mckenzie exercise andSwiss ball exercise). Patients were assessed by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Modified Schober Test (MST) for extension and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), based on pain intensity levels, range of motion, functional disability before starting the exercise programmes and after 3 months of intervention. Results were analysed using Students T Test. Results: There was no significant difference in the pre-treatment session between the two groups. VAS and ODI Values were significantly lower in post-treatment sessions as compared to pre-treatment values in both Groups but MST Values in post-treatment sessions in Group practicing Mckenzie exercise showed significant decreases. Significant decrease in VAS, MST and ODI Valueswere found in subjects practising McKenzie exercise when comparison was done between the two groups after 3 months of treatment. Conclusion: McKenzie exercise and Swissball exercise in patients with mechanical Low back pain reduce pain intensity, increaserange of movementand decrease functional disability. McKenzie exercise seems to have higher efficacy as compared to Swissball exercise

    External fixation by Joshi′s external stabilizing system in cases of proximal humerus fractures in elderly subjects

    Fracture of the proximal humerus is a common and debilitating injury occurring mainly in elderly females and accounts for 4-5% of all adult fractures. Patients with displaced, unstable proximal humeral fractures may have improved outcomes if managed operatively. Objectives: To study the effect of using Joshi′s external stabilizing system (JESS) for the management of fractures of proximal humerus in elderly. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital in West Bengal on 28 subjects with proximal humerus fractures. As per Neer′s classification, 3- and 4-part fractures were included and prepared for JESS fixation. The results of the treatment were evaluated as per Neer′s criteria. Patients were followed up for 10 − 12 months. Results: Among 18 females and 10 males, 22 had 3-part fracture and 6 had 4-part fracture. Mean duration of JESS application was 10 weeks. Among patients with 3-part fractures 4 cases had excellent result, 12 had satisfactory result, 4 had unsatisfactory result and treatment failed in 2 cases. With 4-part fractures, 2 cases had unsatisfactory result and 4 cases were failures. Conclusion: JESS is an alternative option for the treatment of proximal humerus fractures, especially in elderly patients with osteoporosis, showing excellent to good results in cases of Neer′s type 3-part fracture

    Exploding all explosions: Reconfiguring art and architectural meaning, matter, and space with Cornelia Parker’s Cold Dark Matter (1991)

      In our paper, we seek to explore Cornelia Parker’s art and how it engages with exhibition making that overwrites self-referential narratives by revisioning art and architectural meaning, experience, and space. We intend to theorise how Parker’s non-adaptive and divergent architectural artforms transgress artifactual biases and disarticulate the adaptive preferences and prerogatives in exhibition practice. Instead, she offers a speculative possibility space of non-totality and the devalorisation of meaning yet retaining the ability to respond. Parker’s radical technics of installation assume an arbitrariness. Her installations, we think, disrupt meaning and genre-conforming specificities and reimagine non-essential ways to de-concretise conventional exhibition making that subsumes the totalising agencies of architectural meaning and representation which invariably arrives at dense rigidities. Parker’s large-scale installations like her Cold Dark Matter (1991) not only dislocate the essentialist ways of exhibition practice but also reimagine speculative and innovative technics of spatial and architectural manipulation that fractalises the demarcating ontologies of spatiality and perception, producing immersive and collectively attuned more-than-artifacts that move beyond transcendental dependencies with more-than-art resonances. Parker’s artform entails an architectural practice of speculative reworlding which effectuates an affective unfolding of matter and space, instead of imposing fixities or homeostatic formalisations on them. Through these deviant architectural expressions, we shall attempt to conceptualise how Parker stands out and practises a necessary artistic incompletion to destabilise and confront the architectural rigidities in exhibition making and move towards a radical and non-conformist expressivity that accentuates the untapped virtual potentialities of mind, matter and space to produce events and become something more—a fractalising multiplicity recalibrating the collective dynamics of spatiality, sensibility and perception in relation to curatorial methodologies and experiences by designing alternative exhibitions that involve a radical unbecoming in praxis

    Evaluation of some mangrove species on the nature of their reproduction along the coastal belt of the Indian Sunderbans

    Reproductive biology of three dominating mangrove species Rhizophora mucronata, Ceriops decandra and Avicennia marina from the Indian Sunderbans were studied. A comparative account on all floral parts revealed that as the bud progresses to completely open, the length of androecium surpassed the length of gynoecium and the anther matured first thus showing protandrous nature and favouring cross-fertilization. A study of pollen grain viability revealed that all of them produces fairly good amounts of viable pollen grains in their natural condition. The pollens showed their maximum viability late in the morning till early noon. The stigma showed peak receptivity after three days of flower opening in C. decandra and four days of flower opening in R. mucronata and A. marina. All the species showed out-breeding mechanism of pollination. The fruit setting percentage obtained by xenogamy was the highest and autogamy failed to show any result in all the three genera. Although Ceriops decandra and Avicennia marina showed very limited fruit set with geitonogamy, these two species can be called facultative out-crossers, while Rhizophora was obligate outcrosser in nature. The study on floral structure, pollen viability along with stigma receptivity of the investigated taxa guided to maximum exploitation of reproductive behavior for rising artificial and natural plant population in addition to build up a future research strategy in ecosystem conservation

    A Study to Assess the Level of Adherence to Respectful Maternity Care (RMC) and Reasons of non-adherence among Health Personnel in the Maternity Department of Selected Hospitals, West Bengal

    Evidence suggests that in countries with a high maternal mortality like India, the fear of disrespect and abuse that women often encounter in facility-based maternity care is a more powerful deterrent to use of skilled care. The purpose of the study is to assess the level of adherence of health care personnel to each component of Respectful Maternity Care and also to find out the factors influencing non-adherence. A descriptive survey with non-probability purposive sampling was used. An observation checklist and both structured and unstructured interview schedule were administered on 92 health personnel to assess the level of adherence to RMC and reasons of non-adherence. Findings of the study depicts, in physical harm area, adherence among doctors, nursing personnel and Gr-D was 81.9%, 91.6%, 79.2% respectively, in the informed consent area 41.2% (doctors) and 61.1% (nursing personnel). Adherence in the area of choice and preferences was nil and in the area of confidentiality & privacy was 48.7% (doctors), 66.7% (nursing personnel) and 39.6% (Gr-Ds). Non-adherence in the area of dignity & respect was 25.6% (doctors), 18.4% (nursing personnel), 8.3% (Gr-Ds) and in the area of abandonment or denial of care 3.5% (doctors), 4.5% (nursing personnel), 43.7% (Gr-Ds). Adherence in the area of non-discriminatory care was 100% for all and 100% adherence was found in the area of detention against will among doctors and nursing personnel except among Gr-Ds (45.8%). No significant association was found between age, experiences and level of adherence of health personnel (doctor and nursing personnel) [(χ2df (1)=3.841, 0.474 & 0.287, p>0.05] respectively). No significant differences were found between level of adherence score of doctors with nursing personnel [t (78)=2.00, p>0.05]. As observed, adherence to RMC is not at the same level in each area. Least adherent areas are informed consent, choice/ preferences, privacy and detention against will among other personnel
