La dinamica degli opposti. Ricerca letteraria, cultura mediatica e media in Georges Perec
Parental Decisional Regret after Primary Distal Hypospadias Repair: Family and Surgery Variables, and Repair Outcomes
Purpose Decisional regret is defined as distress after making a health care choice and can be an issue for parents electing distal hypospadias repair for their sons. We assessed the influence on decisional regret of variables related to the family, surgery and outcomes. Materials and Methods Charts for 372 patients undergoing primary distal hypospadias repair between 2005 and 2012 were reviewed, and validated questionnaires, including the Decisional Regret Scale, Pediatric Penile Perception Score and Dysfunctional Voiding and Incontinence Scoring System, were administered to parents. Results Data were available for 172 of 372 families (response rate 46.2%). Of 323 parents 128 (39.6%) presented with moderately strong decisional regret, with good agreement within couples. Predictors of decisional regret included intermediate parental educational level (OR 3.19, 95% CI 1.52–6.69), patient not being the first born (OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.07–3.78), family history of hypospadias (OR 4.42, 95% CI 1.96–9.97), initial desire to avoid surgery (OR 2.07, 95% CI 1.04–4.12), younger age at followup (OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.72–0.91), presence of lower urinary tract symptoms (OR 4.92, 95% CI 1.53–15.81) and lower Pediatric Penile Perception Score (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.75–0.99). Decisional regret was unrelated to parental desire to avoid circumcision, surgical variables, development of complications and duration of followup. Conclusions Decisional regret is a problem in a significant proportion of parents electing distal hypospadias repair for their sons. In our experience family variables seemed to be predictors of decisional regret, while surgical variables did not. Predictors of decisional regret included worse parental perception of penile appearance and the presence of lower urinary tract symptoms. However, the latter could be unrelated to surgery. Irrespective of the duration of followup, decisional regret seems decreased in parents of older patients
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Multidisciplinary management of a rare case of mixed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection
Introduction: Mixed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is a extremely rare congenital heart disease. Methods: We report the initial management of a case of Mixed total anomalous pulmonary venous connection associated to right extralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration (BPS). Results: Mixed TAPVC associated to right extra-lobar BPS was diagnosed at birth in a full-term newborn. At one month of age, the patient underwent embolization of the BPS, complicated by coil entrapment in the right common iliac artery requiring urgent laparotomy. Few days later, the congenital cardiac repair was accomplished uneventfully. At 12-months follow-up, the patient did not have pulmonary hypertension, but presented a moderate stenosis of the right femoral artery, which was effectively treated with anticoagulation therapy. Conclusions: The multidisciplinary approach allowed a successful treatment of these complex anomalies and the related potential complications
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The effects of control measures for paratuberculosis on sero-prevalence and clinical disease in Northern Italian dairy herds
The effects of a control program for paratuberculosis were assessed during a six years
period (2001-2006). The survey involved 8 dairy herds located in Northern Italy, with a
number of animals aged >24 months ranging from 224 to 784, mean 437 (SD = 154), median
411. Globally, a mean of 3,497 (SD = 328) animals aged >24 months per year were
monitored during the six years period. Cows showing diarrhoea were readily detected,
isolated and culled after laboratory confirmation. Cows were tested by an indirect blood
serum ELISA during the dry period. Calves were fed only with colostrum from sero-negative
cows and with milk submitted to thermic treatment (70°C for 40 min).
Based on the total number of animals > 24months of age, historical means (from 1995
to 2000) of the sero-prevalence and prevalence of clinical cases were 12.6% and 5.5%,
respectively. Statistical analysis of sero-positivity and clinical cases trends after the
beginning of the control program showed a significant (p<0.01) reduction of both parameters
during the six years period. In particular, the sero-prevalence decreased from 12.7% to 7.3%
and clinical cases decreased from 5.3% to 3.2%.
Following the use of the pasteurizers, a strong reduction of neonatal diarrhoea was
observed in all the herds. In addition, the calf’s mean weight gain/day moved from 500 g to
900 g. Conversely, an increase of myodystrophy cases was detected after two months of
age. The problem was solved by adding selenium and vitamin E to the pasteurized milk

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
