The advisory relationship of Justice Abe Fortas to President Lyndon B. Johnson.
This study examines Abe Fortas' advisory relation ship to Lyndon B. Johnson, with particular emphasis given to the period from 1965 through 1968 when Johnson was President of the United States and Fortas was an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. As a case study, this thesis seeks to examine this significant political relationship and detail some of the major policy decisions of the Johnson Administration in which Fortas played an important role. Examination of original documents--letters, memos, reports--stored in the archives of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library in Austin, Texas, provided significant and revealing "behind-the-scenes" accounts of Fortas' advisory activities for Johnson from 1963 through 1968. An interview with Justice Fortas in 1976 shed no new light on his activities as adviser to Johnson, although the Justice did share his recollections of Johnson and their relationship. Interviews with former Johnson aides provided a more detailed account of Fortas' advisory role.
In seeking to provide a framework for the Fortas Johnson advisory relationship, the author discusses the first association of the two starting in the 1930s and traces the association through the Johnson presidency. To add form to framework, he also discusses Fortas' career vis-a-vis that of Johnson and examines major events in their professional and political careers. To add substance to form and framework, the author relates the principals' own accounts and reactions to their relationship and the events which prompted the need for such an advisory role. An attempt is made to analyze the propriety and significance of Fortas' advisory relationship with the President, with emphasis on the appropriateness of such close contact between a sitting justice of the Supreme Court and a president in office. Since such relationships had occurred earlier in American history, an introductory chapter cursorily examines a few such previous justice-president advisory relationships, as well as the significance of the presidential adviser.
The principal focus of the study is on Fortas' advisory activities for Lyndon Johnson during Johnson's term in the White House. This study is the first attempt of which the author is aware to bring together previous pub1ished accounts of the Fortas-Johnson relationship and certain heretofore unpublished material from the Johnson Administration in a presentation of the full range of the Fortas-Johnson advisory relationship. Unfortunately, many of the documents relative to Johnson's dealings with Fortas remain classified and unavailable to the public under the stipulations of Johnson's deed to the LBJ Library. Only a fraction of the material presently available in the LBJ Library on Fortas and Johnson is included in this study. Nevertheless, this study attempts to demonstrate that Abe Fortas was perhaps Lyndon Johnson's closest and most influential adviser. From the formative years of their careers during the New Deal as bureaucrat and congressman through the 1960s as justice and president, Fortas and Johnson developed a binding relationship as adviser and client. This study attempts to present significant facts relative to that relationship and relate the benefits and problems resulting from it

In 2013, Krash received the Lifetime Achievers Award from the American Lawyer’s.Abe Krash worked for Arnold, Fortas & Porter, and assisted Abe Fortas in researching the issues and writing the brief for Gideon v. Wainwright Gideon v. Wainwright 372 U.S. 335 (1963). In the interview, Krash recalls Fortas’ defense strategy, and reflected about the impact of the case as one of the landmark cases of constitutional law in the last fifty years. At the same time, he emphasized that “all of the hopes that we had have not been fulfilled.
Students\u27 Right to Speak: The First Amendment in Public Schools
In 1969, Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas called free speech in public schools a hazardous freedom, but one well worth the risk. A half-century later, with technology enabling students to communicate in ways only dreamed about in Fortas\u27 time, that freedom seems more hazardous than ever. Yet still worth the risk, given equal respect for students\u27 First Amendment rights and for the requirements of an orderly educational institution. This book provides educators, administrators, school board members and parents a starting point in creating student speech policies that encourage the responsible exercise of constitutional freedoms, while respecting the learning environment. The author discusses the history, sociology, law and philosophy surrounding student speech, demonstrating that free speech and effective teaching and administration in public schools are not mutually exclusive.https://digitalcommons.whitworth.edu/faculty_books/1061/thumbnail.jp

Asymptomatic infections with Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Trichomonas vaginalis among women in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis
International audienceSyndromic management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is common in settings with limited access to diagnostic testing. However, this approach does not capture asymptomatic STIs. Untreated asymptomatic infections may result in serious complications and sequelae in women. We aimed to estimate the proportion and the prevalence of asymptomatic Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) infections among women in low- and middle-income countries. We searched Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science for articles published between 2000 and 2022. We used random effect models to compute the proportion and prevalence estimates and performed subgroup analysis. We evaluated the quality of each article using the Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies and performed sensitivity analyses. This study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42022286673. Forty-eight eligible studies were included. The proportion of asymptomatic CT, NG, and TV infections were: 60.7% [95% Confidence Interval (CI): 50.4; 70.5], 53.3% [37.1; 69.1], and 56.9% [44.6; 68.9], respectively. The proportion of women with asymptomatic infections was the highest in Africa for the three pathogens. The pooled prevalence of asymptomatic CT, NG, and TV infection was 4.70 per 100 women [95%CI: 3.39; 6.20], 3.11 [1.34; 5.54], and 5.98 [3.46; 9.12], respectively. More than half of the women infected by CT, NG, or TV were asymptomatic. To avoid undiagnosed and untreated asymptomatic infections leading to complications, alternative approaches to syndromic management urgently need to be considered
Алекс (Алтер) Файтелсон. Непокорившиеся. Летопись еврейского сопротивления : recenzija
Recenzijoje analizuojama A. Faitelsono memuarinė knyga rusų kalba „Непокорившиеся. [Rebellious. The Chronicle of Jewish Resistance] by Alex Faitelson in Russian (Теl Aviv, 2001). The author’s first memoir book on the resistance of the Jewish nation during Nazi occupation in Kaunas ghetto was published in 1993 in Yiddish. Afterwards, he collected the material for several years and supplemented his book with the already published material in Hebrew, English, French and German. The book in Russian, supplemented with new documents and photographs, significantly differs from others. The introduction and body of the book declare a resolution to tell only truth about events and people. The content of the book, presented documents and commentaries give an impression that the publication was promoted by a wish to depict oneself as a legendary personality who is worth attention and praise. This evokes a distrust in the author’s aspiration to tell only truth. The book structure is based on the chronicle method. Every chapter tells the events of a certain period (1941–1944). Almost all chapters of the book contain the author’s recollections of the facts and events in which the author was not present and which he could not know or observe, and which have not been supported by reliable documents. On the other hand, a large share of documents presented in the book have nothing in common with the described events. In general, Faitelson’s book could be said to contain a lot of morals, distorted facts and events, as well as lies about people. Neither the historical nor the memoir part contributes to the disclosure of historical truth and supplement of historical facts
