    No full text
International audienceTomi Ungerer, author and illustrator of works for children, born in France, Strasbourg, in 1931, speaks three languages: French, English, German, and the Alsatian dialect. Therefore, his idiosyncratic linguistic fluency gives him an opportunity to supervise the translation of his pieces. Written primarily in English, his works are also provided – with his supervision – both in French and German. Many excerpts of these texts manifest how effectively Ungerer plays with all the languages he is acquainted with, as he creates expressions, puns, and sounds emerging from his subversive mind. If his concoction of these translations and retranslations are taken into consideration, it would be plausible to affirm that Ungerer has been setting forth a living and open work – a real linguistic palimpsest. This study focuses first on the Alsatian aspects present in Ungerer’s work, whose childhood has been spent in Alsace. Afterwards, the focus shall be directed to two of his works – Les Trois Brigands and Otto – which have been retranslated; and, finally, the expressions which have been revised by the author, present in Amis-Amies are reflected upon.

International audienceThe cathedral of Strasbourg has been drawn many times by the author-illustrator Tomi Ungerer. His posters, postcards, drawings, collages, book illustrations, and advertisements, created between 1975 and 2007, were published in an album entitled Mes cathédrales (published by La Nuée Bleue, 2007). This tasty anthology retraces with humor the representations and the imaginary of the cathedral of Strasbourg developed by this Alsatian who does not hesitate to reinterpret this emblem of the Alsatian culture.

On Abstracting Decision Procedures for Non-monotonic Reasoning

ing Decision Procedures for Non-monotonic Reasoning Tomi Janhunen 1 Abstract. The author has recently introduced a meta-level specification for non-monotonic theories which has default theories, normal logic programs and separated autoepistemic theories as instances. Semantics including the stable, stationary and regular semantics are generalized for non-monotonic theories satisfying the specification in a straightforward way. Most importantly, it is possible to prove properties of semantics directly from the specification and independently of the instances. This paper provides a preliminary discussion of extending the specification to cover computational issues of the instances. It is expected that properties such as decidability and computational time complexity can be addressed by distinguishing non-monotonic theories that are finitely characterizable. Moreover, it seems that meta-level decision procedures can be devised to cover reasoning corresponding to any finitely characteriz..

Methyltertbutylether or MTBE analyzed from naphta because it is not desired compound in petrochemical prosesses. Naphta samples pretreated in solid phase exraction column and MTBE content analyzed by GC-FID using internal standard method. Samples analyzed by the method there has been major deviation in results between same author as different authors. Objective to this work was to develop the method more repeatable. This thesis investigated effects of different methods of sample preparation and gas chromatographic parameters of analyzed MTBE consentration. The sample pretreatment studied solid phase extraction method´s variable effects of MTBE concentration. Also studied possibility to use dilution or water extraction in sample preparation method. As regards of gas chromatografic analysis examined nearly all the modifiable parameters effects about MTBE seperation. Based on these studies it was found that the deviation of results influence similar compounds as MTBE, which could not be completely seperated by existing tools. On the basis of measurement results were standardized method which provides result to the test sample up to contain MTBE. This is true in the case of MTBE and 1-propanol used as internal standard act same way in solid phase extraction

Building a Practical Quantum Network: How to Leverage Quantum Entanglement as a Resource

    No full text
14Quantum Networking is an increasingly relevant research field aimed at facilitating a number of current and future applications, such as long-distance quantum key distribution (QKD), blind quantum computing and distributed quantum sensing [1]. Many recent publications present visions for a 'quantum internet' capable of enabling such applications on a global scale. These works often focus on fundamental architectures, protocol stacks, and long-term technology roadmaps, generally assuming the availability of quantum repeaters and memories that are not yet ready for widespread deployment [2]. In contrast, near-term progress depends on identifying architectures that can be built with components available today, and addressing challenges in integrating them into existing telecom infrastructure. Recent works have demonstrated quantum entanglement distribution via networks and its use in illustrative quantum applications under realistic conditions [3 , 4]
