Australia’s viticultural trends: Insights from a new database
This article summarizes and updates an article originally published as Anderson and Puga (2023a). The aim of this note is to summarise key insights from a recently compiled and updated annual database on Australia’s winegrape and wine production (Anderson and Puga, 2023b). This database, with its 189 tables, is freely available from the website of the University of Adelaide’s Wine Economics Research Centre (for a lengthier analysis and a detailed description of the assumptions behind this database, see Anderson and Puga, 2023a)

Winegrape similarities and concentrations: A description
The aim of this article is to describe the mixes of winegrape varieties in the world’s main wine-producing countries. In doing so, we summarise a recent scientific journal article (Puga and Anderson 2023), in which we used data on area by variety for virtually all wine-producing countries and did some statistical analyses based on two indexes that we computed with those data. One of these indexes measures varietal similarities between countries, and the other measures varietal concentration within countries
Winegrape similarities and concentrations: implications
In a previous article in this journal, we described the mixes of winegrape varieties across countries in terms of both similarities and concentrations. We showed that countries are becoming more similar in their mixes of winegrape varieties between them and with respect to the world as a whole, and that they are becoming more concentrated. The aim of this article is to discuss the implications of these recent changes in similarities and concentrations. These insights are based on those of a recent scientific journal article (Puga and Anderson 2023), as well as those from other work – part of which is first published here

Trading arrangements and industrial development
How do different trading arrangements influence the industrialization process of developing countries? Can preferential trading arrangements (PTAs) be superior to multilateral liberalization, or at least an alternative when multilateral liberalization proceeds slowly? If so, what form should the PTAs take? Are developing countries better advised to seek PTAs with industrial countries or among themselves? Traditional analysis of these issues has been based on the idea of trade creation and trade diversion. The problem with this analysis is that it starts from assuming a pattern of comparative advantage of newly industrialized countries. The experience of these countries suggests the need for an analysis in which the pattern of comparative advantage is not set in stone but is potentially flexible, and in which less developed countries can develop and converge in both income and economic structure to industrial economies. The authors outline an alternative approach for analyzing the role of trade in promoting industrial development. There are few fundamental differences between countries that generate immutable patterns of comparative advantage. Instead the pattern of trade and development in the world economy is determined mainly by history. Cumulative causation has created concentrations of industrial activity in particular locations (industrial countries) and left other areas more dependent on primary activities. Economic development can be thought of as the spread of these concentrations from country to country. Different trading arrangements may have a major impact on this development process. By changing the attractiveness of countries as a base for manufacturing production they can potentially trigger or postpone industrial development. This approach explains why firms are reluctant to move to economies that have lower wages and labor costs, and shows how trade liberalization can change the incentives to become established in developing countries. It provides a mechanism through which import liberalization can have a powerful effect in promoting industrialization. And it suggests that import liberalization may create or amplify differences between liberalizing countries with the possible political tensions this may create. While these features are consistent with the world economy, they fall short of providing convincing empirical support for the approach. Using the approach, the authors derive number of conclusions about the effects of trade liberalization. First, that unilaterally liberalizing imports of manufactures can promote development of the local manufacturing industry. The mechanism is forward linkages from imported intermediates, but this may be interpreted as part of a wider package of linkages coming from these imports. Second, the gains from liberalization through PTA membership are likely to exceed those obtained from unilateral action. South-South PTAs will be sensitive to the market size of member states, and North-South PTAs seem to offer better prospects for participating Southern economies, if not for North and excluded countries. Third, the effects of particular schemes (such as the division of benefits between Southern economies) will depend on the characteristics of the countries and cross-country differences in these characteristics.Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Water and Industry,Labor Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Trade and Regional Integration,Water and Industry
Reseña del libro: Palabras vivas. Ensayos de crítica literaria en torno a María Luisa Puga
María Luisa Puga (1944-2004), a writer of memory, a permanent traveler whose prose bears witness to a latent concern for social oppression and the never-ending search for the self. Endowed with an excellent critical sense, the author from the capital knew how to take control of her style and create a literature of denunciation against the tyranny of the male gender in contemporary society.

Abstract: This article explores the ways that Mexican author María Luisa Puga and Colombian journalist and writer Margarita Posada articulate the intricacies of experiencing chronic illness, offering a novel interpretation of suffering that exposes the multifaceted dimensions of living with illness as women. By examining their works, namely Diario del dolor (2004) and Las muertes chiquitas (2019), the article discusses the creativity with which Puga and Posada approach the experience of illness, immersing readers in emotions and experiences that, even for medical professionals, often remain inaccessible. The paper investigates how writing acts as a lifeline amidst agonizing and traumatic events, empowering both authors to reclaim, redefine, demystify, and reshape their illnesses on their own terms. Additionally, this study scrutinizes the act of writing about illness as a form of resistance and activism, bringing to light the marginalized and stigmatized bodies of women afflicted by illness. Through their personal accounts, Puga and Posada join a community of women constructing a foundation of knowledge to bridge the gaps left by medicine, revealing experiences, sentiments, and realities frequently disregarded or silenced. Their narratives lay the groundwork for other women grappling with chronic or incurable diseases, transforming Diario del dolor and Las muertes chiquitas into indispensable readings that play a pivotal role in dismantling the societal taboos and stigmas intertwined with the experience of illness.
