Autor/s Renata GeldUniversity of Zagreb, Croatia   ABSTRACT The central aim of this work is to describe semantic determination, i.e., topological vs. lexical determination, by investigating aspects of construal (Langacker 1987) in English PVs with in and out. The paper focuses on L2 processing related to what we might call strategic thinking about linguistic meaning. More specifically, it attempts to demonstrate the following: a) how the nature of verbs affects the overall semantic determination of particle verb constructions, and b) if/how the users of English make sense of particle verbs, and how much they rely on topological/grammatical components in the process of constructing meaning. The results suggest that the nature of verbs does affect the users’ strategic meaning construal – it differs in terms of their tendency towards one of the following types of semantic determination: a) topological, b) lexical, and, c) compositional.Author/s Renata GeldUniversity of Zagreb, Croatia   ABSTRACT The central aim of this work is to describe semantic determination, i.e., topological vs. lexical determination, by investigating aspects of construal (Langacker 1987) in English PVs with in and out. In this work, we focus on the work Denso e Leve como o voo das Árvores (2015), by Recife poet Renata Pimentel, born in 1972. The book is articulated around cycles of nature. Through geopoetry (SILVA JR, 2015), we advance through poetic voices in this book which, according to the author herself, is a dramaturgy-cycle of poems – set that articulates aesthetic, ethical and political dimensions of the poet-nature relationship. This investigation is guided by the studies of Augusto Silva Júnior (2015), Walter Benjamin (1989), Sigmund Freud (2011), Otávio Paz (2012) and other scholars, whose contributions add in a dialogical way with this effort of producing responsive literary critic about a living poet of Brazilian geopeosia.

This paper describes and discusses issues pertaining to investigating meaning construal in the language of the blind. It introduces key problems in this largely unexplored area and proposes possible avenues of research by outlining four studies conducted over a period of eight years. The central arguments are built around the fundamental cognitive linguistic premise that language is an experiential phenomenon intimately related to general cognitive processes. The author focuses on the role of salience (or attention) and demonstrates how it is coded in the language of the blind. The main part of the paper starts with the outline of two exploratory studies the aim of which was to identify possible differences in salience and situatedness. The author discusses the contribution of the two studies and proceeds by describing a more focused study whose hypotheses were motivated by some of the questions raised in the previous two studies. The primary research question was related to the idea of the primacy of space in the blinds’ mental imagery and meaning construal. Finally, the author proposes a model integrating key language internal and language external factors affecting the process of meaning construal in this extraordinary population, and finishes by describing the fourth study whose primary aim was to double– test the research instrument used to investigate spatial (topological) elements in the language of the blind

Frequency and type of gesture in the blind and the sighted in L1 and L2

In interpersonal communication, speech is often accompanied by gestures, which help convey the intended message in visual terms. The sighted can see gestures which they produce, but the blind cannot. Such a discrepancy raises the question whether gesture plays the same role for the blind as they do for the sighted. Furthermore, we may ask ourselves whether the blind and the sighted gesticulate differently in different languages. In the case of L1 vs. L2, the issue becomes even more complex because L2 speakers use various communication strategies in order to compensate for possible lack of proficiency in a productive skill such as speaking. They tend to paraphrase, describe, use superordinate or subordinate concepts, borrow from other languages, create new words, and so on. In addition to these language-based strategies, they often resort to all sorts of nonverbal strategies that are likely to help them convey the intended message. It is not unusual for L2 speakers to point to themselves or objects and people around them, make facial expressions, change their body posture, and use gestures. The aim of the study presented in this paper was to investigate frequency and types of gestures in blind and sighted speakers of Croatian as L1 and English as L2. We begin with a theoretical overview of gestures: we explain what gestures are and how they are classified. The outline is followed by a summary of previous research on gestures which served as a basis for our hypotheses. Next, we outline our aims and how they are classified. The outline is followed by a summary of previous research on gestures which served as a basis for our hypotheses. Next, we outline our aims and describe the methodology of the study. Finally, we present and discuss the results

Strategic construal of in and out in English particle verbs (PVs)

Autor/s Renata GeldUniversity of Zagreb, CroatiaRicardo MaldonadoUniversidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico   ABSTRACT The central aim of this work is to describe the strategic construal of in and out in English particle verbs. The term strategic construal assumes the following: 1) exploration of strategic thinking in L2 learning and processing, and 2) exploration of dynamic and subjective construction of meaning pertaining to the human ability to understand and portray the same situation in alternate ways (Langacker 1987). In other words, the paper relies on two theoretical paradigms with self-evident commonalities – a strong link between language and cognition, and the insistence on the individual and subjective nature of meaning construction. The aim was to investigate whether L2 users of English are aware of the symbolic nature of language when dealing with highly schematic linguistic categories. Our hypotheses were that construal of in and out is comparable to their cognitive linguistic description in English as L1 and that it shows a cognitively motivated path from the topological to the aspectual. Both hypotheses have been confirmed.Author/s Renata GeldUniversity of Zagreb, CroatiaRicardo MaldonadoUniversidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico   ABSTRACT The central aim of this work is to describe the strategic construal of in and out in English particle verbs. This thesis investigates the relationship between EFL learners’ proficiency and speaking anxiety. Foreign language speaking anxiety is a complex phenomenon that has attracted a lot of attention, especially its relation to proficiency levels. The purpose of this research was to measure Croatian high school students’ levels of foreign language speaking anxiety and to examine whether proficiency levels would have any effect on them. Moreover, this study aimed to investigate which of the indicators of proficiency level would correlate the most with students’ speaking anxiety. The results show that Croatian high school learners of English experience moderate levels of speaking anxiety, and that proficiency can either decrease or increase these levels. Furthermore, the indicator of proficiency that correlates the most is the score on the proficiency test, followed by self-perceived proficiency levels and teachers’ evaluation of students’ speaking skills. However, English GPA does not seem to have a linear relationship with speaking anxiety
