Impact of spatial aliasing on sea-ice thickness measurements
Publisher's PDFWe explore spatial aliasing of non-Gaussian distributions of sea-ice thickness. Using a
heuristic model and >1000 measurements, we show how different instrument footprint sizes and shapes
can cluster thickness distributions into artificial modes, thereby distorting frequency distribution,
making it difficult to compare and communicate information across spatial scales. This problem has not
been dealt with systematically in sea ice until now, largely because it appears to incur no significant
change in integrated thickness which often serves as a volume proxy. Concomitantly, demands are
increasing for thickness distribution as a resource for modeling, monitoring and forecasting air–sea
fluxes and growing human infrastructure needs in a changing polar environment. New demands include
the characterization of uncertainties both regionally and seasonally for spaceborne, airborne, in situ
and underwater measurements. To serve these growing needs, we quantify the impact of spatial aliasing
by computing resolution error (Er) over a range of horizontal scales (x) from 5 to 500 m. Results are
summarized through a power law (Er = bxm) with distinct exponents (m) from 0.3 to 0.5 using example
mathematical functions including Gaussian, inverse linear and running mean filters. Recommendations
and visualizations are provided to encourage discussion, new data acquisitions, analysis methods and
metadata formats.University of Delaware. Department of Geography.University of Delaware. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
On the uncertainty of sea-ice isostasy
Publisher's PDFDuring late winter 2007, coincident measurements of sea ice were collected using various
sensors at an ice camp in the Beaufort Sea, Canadian Arctic. Analysis of the archived data provides new
insight into sea-ice isostasy and its related R-factor through case studies at three scales using different
combinations of snow and ice thickness components. At the smallest scale (<1 m; point scale), isostasy
is not expected, so we calculate a residual and define this as (‘zjey’) to describe vertical displacement
due to deformation. From 1 to 10m length scales, we explore traditional isostasy and identify a specific
sequence of thickness calculations which minimize freeboard and elevation uncertainty. An effective
solution exists when the R-factor is allowed to vary: ranging from 2 to 12, with mean of 5.17, mode of
5.88 and skewed distribution. At regional scales, underwater, airborne and spaceborne platforms are
always missing thickness variables from either above or below sea level. For such situations, realistic
agreement is found by applying small-scale skewed ranges for the R-factor. These findings encourage a
broader isostasy solution as a function of potential energy and length scale. Overall, results add insight
to data collection strategies and metadata characteristics of different thickness products.University of Delaware. Department of Geography.University of Delaware. Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Power of Language and Silence: Reinhard Jirgl’s Die Stille
Reinhard Jirgl (1953–) is an emphatically German author. He insists that German is “die Sprache in der ich denke, spreche und schreibe,”¹ and the award of several prestigious prizes (including the Büchner Prize in 2010) has confirmed his place in the German literary tradition. Yet Jirgl uses the German language in consistently and characteristically iconoclastic ways to challenge the authority of historical, political, and institutional discourse. Precisely because his work went against the ideological prescriptions of the East German state, it remained unpublished in the GDR, where Jirgl lived and worked. Since unification he has become a prolific author,..
Reinhard Köhler's scientific production: words, numbers and pictures
This study draws upon statistical analysis techniques of textual data to examine a corpus composed of 22 research articles published between 1997 and 2010 by Reinhard Köhler as a single author or in collaboration with other scholars. The aim of this article is to draw a representation of the main areas of interest of his research. After having drawn an overall representation of the corpus, Köhler’s latest work – an unpublished volume on Quantitative Syntax Analysis – was analysed to understand its role within the context of his research
Review: Reinhard Müller (2008). Marienthal: Das Dorf - Die Arbeitslosen - Die Studie
The book by Reinhard MÜLLER deals with the well-known study "Marienthal: The Sociography of an Unemployed Community" by Marie JAHODA, Paul F. LAZARSFELD, and Hans ZEISEL (1933, 1971). The author presents interesting socio-historical details about the study itself as well as about the community and factory. More than half of the book is dedicated to the development of the workers' settlement of Marienthal, starting with the founding of the village and then the textile factory. The author describes historical events, important people' and developments in the community. Also additional information - portraits and memories - about the well-known study is presented. The book not only enables a deeper insight into the classical study and the settlement of Marienthal, it also illustrates (Austrian) history by way of a community and a study

Entwurf hochdynamischer Sensor- und Regelsysteme für die adaptive Laserbearbeitung
The vision, that a laser system adapts and controls all process variables; such as beam power, focus, feed rate, etc., in real-time, is in need of a name: adaptive laser processing. This work devises the essential steps for the development of systems, which provide the laser with the sensory, logical and learning abilities relevant to adaptive laser processing.
The metaphor of conception or birth plays a central role in neo-platonism: it is used alongside other to describe the proceeding of the reality of the highest principle and their gradual development. This chapter explores the following questions with reference to two Neoplatonic philosophers, first 'Hour: Plotinus and his student Porphyry: what does this mean for the speech of the gods or the highest principle as a father, if, Father 'a mere abstract relations and function name synonymous with, Author' or 'polluter pays', what aspects of the father image are emphasized and what implications these divine beings for the representation of the relationships between themselves and the relationship between man and God. In their texts, the two go with the father metaphor differently to and present in all structural similarity of the theological system a God each but different stored in its relations with the world and man
Kommentare zum italienischen Zivilgesetzbuch. Geschichte, Struktur und Funktion
The aim of the contribution is to outline the history, the structure and the functions of legal commentaries in the Italian tradition. After a historical introduction, which takes into consideration the relationships between the Italian, the French and the German scholarships, the author exposes the main characteristics of the different types of legal commentaries. The structure and the style of the main publications are put under scrutiny and compared to other literary genres, namely treaties and encyclopedias. The essay tries then to indicate the current “value” of legal commentaries for doctrinal and practice-oriented research purposes. Finally, it discusses the future of the literary genre and its possible implementation in online databases
