Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textBu araştırma Sosyal Bilgiler Dersinde sosyobilimsel bir konu olarak küresel ısınma hakkında ortaokul sekizinci sınıf öğrencilerinin görüşlerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Ayrıca öğrencilerin argümantasyon becerileri kontrol edilmiştir. Veri toplamak için 2013-2014 yılları arasında Yozgat ili Sorgun ilçesinde bulunan 16 devlet okulunda öğrenim görmekte olan 613 öğrenci, örneklem grubu olarak seçkisiz örnekleme yöntemlerinden tabakalı örnekleme yöntemi ile seçilmiştir. Araştırma deseni olarak hem nitel hem nicel araştırma yöntemlerinin birlikte kullanıldığı karma yöntem tercih edilmiştir. Araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen beşli likert tipte hazırlanmış Küresel Isınma Öğrenci Görüş Anketi ile öğrenci görüşleri belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Anketten toplanan veriler tarama modeline bağlı olarak SPSS programında analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmanın ikinci aşamasında anket verilerinden elde edilen sonuçlara göre öğrencilerin anket puanları alt, orta ve üst grup olarak belirlenip her bir gruptan üçer öğrenci ile odak grup görüşmesi yapılmıştır. Buradan elde edilen nitel veriler betimsel analiz yöntemi ile çözümlenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda anketteki "Küresel ısınma buzulların erimesine sebep olur." maddesini öğrencilerin %80,9'u olumlu yönde (Katılıyorum ve Kesinlikle Katılıyorum) yanıtladığı görülmüştür. "Küresel ısınmadan dolayı dünyanın her yeri aynı oranda etkilenecektir." Şeklindeki anket maddesine ise öğrencilerin %74,2'si kararsız ve olumlu yönde yanıt verdiği tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan kız öğrencilerin erkeklere kıyasla, kasaba ve köylerde yaşayanların şehir merkezlerinde yaşayanlara kıyasla küresel ısınma konusunda daha fazla bilgiye sahip olduğu görülmüştür. Öğrencilerin öğrenim gördükleri okulun bulunduğu konuma göre (kasaba-şehir merkezi) anlamlı farklılık olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmaya katılan öğrencilerin küresel ısınmayla ilgili olarak ilk bilgi edinme kaynaklarının en çok %55,8 oranla kitle iletişim araçları olduğu, daha sonra ise %41,4 oranla öğrencilerin bilgilerini ilk olarak okuldan elde ettikleri anlaşılmıştır. Öğrencilerin ilgi duyduğu dersler arasından Fen Bilimleri Dersine karşı ilgi duyan öğrencilerin anket maddeleri puanlandığında en yüksek ortalamaya sahip olduğu görülmüştür. Odak grup görüşmesi verileri analiz edildiğinde anket puanlarına göre üst grupta yer alan öğrencilerin diğer iki guruba (alt ve orta) göre argümantasyon becerilerinin daha yüksek olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.This research was carried out to study the debate skills and conceptions of 8th-grade students about the Global Warming as a socioscientific issue at Social Studies class. In order to collect the data, 613 8th-grade students from 16 schools of Sorgun district of Yozgat city, studying between the years of 2013 and 2014 were chosen as the sample group with the stratified sampling method which is one of the random sampling methods. The data were obtained from both the qualitative and quantitative methods. The conceptions of students were endeavoured to be determined with a Survey About Student Conception Of Global Warming, prepared as a five point likert scale by the researcher by taking the model into consideration, in the scanning process. The data obtained from the survey were analysed via SPSS. At the second part of the research, after determining the survey results as low, medium and high groups according to the obtained data conclusion, 3 students from each group were involved in the focus group conversation. The data obtained from this process were analysed and later evaluated via descriptive analysis method. As a result of the research questionnaires "Global warming causes the melt of the ice" it has been observed that %80.9 of the students have answered positively. "Global warming will affect all around the world at the same rate." it has been detected that %74.2 of the students gave the undecided and positively (I agree, I definitely agree) answer. It is seen that girls joined the research compared to boys, and the people living in towns and villages compared to the ones who are living in city centres have more information about the global warming. It was also confirmed that the difference about the place where students study (rural area-center) mattered significantly, too. It was understood that the very first source from which the students participated in the research found information about Global Warming was the mass media with the rate of %55,8. And, it was found that the rate of the students who got their first information about the topic from school subjects was %41,4. The average of the questionnaire points of the students who are interested in science lesson has been the highest. When focus group conversation data is analyzed, it was concluded that the students participating in the survey from the high groups had better debate skills rather than the students in other groups (medium and low groups)
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
