Dlaczego Owidiusz został wygnany? Literatura jako narzędzie rozwiązywania zagadek z przeszłości.

Two writers, Jacek Bocheński and Josef Škvorecký, in different times and in a different cultural situation, independently, embarked on a task to solve one of the mysteries from the history of literature, namely, the reasons for Ovid’s banishment. In the novels Nazo poeta and Nevysvětlitelný příběh aneb vyprávění Questa Firma Sicula both writers seek the answer to the question about the reasons for the exile of the author of Metamorphoses. They are trying to reveal the autobiographical information coded in the plots of Ovid’s poems and in the metaphors of lyrical utterances, subordinated to the rules of the ancient poetics. They both know that in the situation when the texts are the only source of information, they must be the primary way to reach the truth. Although the exposed intertextuality emphasizes pozareferencjalny dimension of the story, in practice it turns out to be, what both authors claim in their novels, the only instrument for perceiving reality

Danieli Hodrovej mit i poetyka miasta

The author analyses the theoretical and historical work of the Czech literary theoretician entitled “Citlivé město (eseje z mytopoetiky”), Praha 2006, ss. 416. Hodrova’s work is focused on the topic of the city as an architectural creation and a complicated social and cultural phenomenon. In the post-modern anthropological thought the city is the subject of interest as an area that defines the identity of the human being through urban notions. The historical model of Hodrova’s reflection is the Czech Prague seen through the eyes of writers, artists, architects but also through the European tradition of presenting the city. Ipso facto, the monograph that reconstructs the artistic means of presenting Prague transforms into a dispute in the area of social psychology, mythical studies and anthropology

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Flâneur nadrzeczywistości. Vítězslava Nezvala surrealne wędrówki po Pradze

In the surrealistic period of his literary work Vítězslav Nezval, following the French formula of presenting Paris as an archetypical modern city, published textual passage Pražský chodec (1938) which title is taken from the famous Apollinaire’s story but its narrative schema resembles the Louis Aragon’s Paris Peasant. In opposition to avant-garde ideas of the perfect urbanization projects connected with the technological progress and futurological utopias Nezval tries to show Prague (more mysterious and surreal in his eyes than the capital of France) as a space of living literary tradition, full of lieux de mémoire and traces of long past events. Walking around urban streets, alleys or bridges often regarded as the typical surrealistic activity, becomes here an instrument of evoking these memories and it is also treated as a metaphor of poetic creation. Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Towards the disillusion of reality. Fiction and reference in Czech postmodern literature after 1989

A nade wszystko – w jaki sposób kryzys referencji wybrzmiewa w tekstach pisarzy, którzy po 1989 roku, jak twierdzi Kratochvil, pozostali w poczuciu „autystycznej i solipsystycznej izolacji”?The thesis is an attempt to analyze selected texts from the area of Czech postmodern literature, which are related to the so called imaginative trend or “generation of a stolen tale”. I scrutinize works of Michal Ajvaz, Daniela Hodrová and Jiří Kratochvil, confronting them with literary works of writers from younger generation - Jáchym Topol and Miloš Urban. Fiction and reference, which are the main subject of this dissertation, are an issue worth noting, especially in relation to literature which is still ambiguously (also in the Czech Republic) qualified as “postmodern”. Looking at the role of these categories in Czech literature seems justified in the face of dilemmas emerging in the context of discussions on the subject of postmodernism (its presence/absence), treated on the one hand as the aftermath of modernism, and on the other - as its contestation. In the dissertation, I am looking for an answer to the question about the conditions of "post-communist postmodernism", how does it relate to the "tragedy of Central Europe"? How did Czech critics, literary and scientific circles react to the end of “Grand narratives”? Is there a connection between "surrealistic orientation" and postmodernism? And above all - how does the crisis of reference resound in the texts of writers who, after 1989, remained in (according to Kratochvil) a sense of "autistic and solipsist isolation"

“The Cat Looks at the Dog Not with Hatred, but Contemptuously”: Čapek’s Remarks on the Animal Mind

Zamieszczone w niej opowieści o zwierzętach czerpią materiał tematyczny z codziennej i empirycznej obserwacji i nie wymagają korzystania z systemów kulturowych odniesień i wyobrażeń. The book by Karl Čapek Měl jsem psa a kočku (I had a dog and a cat) appeared (posthumously) in 1939 in the Czech publishing market. This publication, which consisted of several essays, a story about the fox terrier Dašenka and a humorous guide to dog breeds, was mostly treated by literary scholars as some kind of hybrid bricolage of a miscellaneous texts. The animal stories published in this book draw their thematic material from everyday and empirical observation and do not need to use systems of cultural references and imagination. Their reception, however, requires common knowledge, available to those (i.e., in fact, to everyone) who have ever dealt with domestic animals and thus are able to confirm these observations, confront them with their own experience and, as a result, appreciate the accuracy and insight of the diagnoses offered by the author. The paradoxical conclusions of Čapek’s remarks throw readers out of their cognitive routine and show that the problem of animal emotional and intellectual life is more complicated than is usually considered. The narrative portraits of dog and feline heroes are primarily used to build anthropological models for which the patterns of animal behaviour constitute a convincing (because reduced to simplified “basic” behavioural matrices) exemplification

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
