Limb body wall complex in two heterozygotic twins: a case report

Introdution. Limb-Body Wall Complex (LBWC) is a congenital defect which includes at least two of the following characteristics: abdominal and/or thoracic body wall defects, exencephaly or encephalocoele with or without craniofacial defects (56%) and spinal defects associated with marked vertebral or sacral defects (95%). Case Report. We present a case report of an infant with LBWC, borned by diamniotic twin pregnancy. A prenatal ultrasound reported an healthy fetus and a fetus with multiple malformations. At birth we found a big abdominal wall defect, absence of scrotal sac and testicles, asymmetric chest and no major deformities in craniofacial region. At 2 hours of life, we removed the amniotic sac, we put the stomach and the spleen in the abdominal cavity, which is virtual, and positioned a spring-loaded silo. At 15th day of life we had complete reduction of the intestinal loops and liver and we closed the wall defect with a prosthesis and a cryopreserved skin. The general conditions of the patient, very severe since birth, became progressively worse and he died in the 21st day of life. Discussion. Once the diagnosis is done the physician should offer the parents a therapeutic abortion, and above all, in case they want to carry the pregnancy to term, we need to prepare them to the severity of the malformation and the high probability of death

Association of microphthalmia and esophageal atresia: description of a patient and review of the letterature

Since 1988,when Rogers fìrst described a boy with anophthalmia associated with esophageal atresia, eight similar cases have been reported. These patients lend support to the hypothesis that this association of congenital anomalies constitutes a discrete entity, alrhough the etiology is still unknown. We report a patient with this combination of malformations as well as a marked hypoplasia of the entire left half of the body

Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication with fibrin glue: Experimental study on pigs

    No full text
Nowadays laparoscopy shows a great development in the pediatric age group. Pediatric surgeons are now able to study the possible applications in pediatric surgery of this new and fascinating procedure. A mandatory laparoscopic training to perform any important operation is clearly essential. Only a few cases of Nissen fundoplication have been reported in children. We suggest this experimental study in which we add a technical modification by using fibrin glue to tighten the gastric wrap on the esophagus positioning only two stitches at the extremes of the suture. The results were interesting and we think it an excellent starting point for a future clinical application of this new technique

OMENTAL CYSTS IN THE PEDIATRIC AGE: MINI-INVASIVE APPROACH. Omental cysts are benign abdominal neo-formation, rarely found at any age. Their higher frequency is reported between the 1st and the 5th year of life, and their incidence is around 1:140.000 hospital admittances. It is to underline, however, that the majority of these lesions remain unknown, because not always clinical manifestations are present and sometimes they constitutes an accidental finding during a laparotomy made for other causes. Rarity of these lesions and lack of defined clinical characteristics make diagnosis very hard. In fact, even in presence of clinical manifestations, clinical picture is always various and non specific, ranging from the simple objectivity of abdominal mass, to recurrent abdominal pain, to intestinal occlusion due to "ab estrinseco" compression on nearest intestinal loop. Author report on a case of symptomatic cyst in a three year old giri, come to observation for a painful abdominal masso The giri undervent surgical radical exeresis of the cyst via videolaparoscopy with "out" tecnique

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
