The objective of our systematic review of the literature was to identify, in the international literature, studies comparing the use of platelet concentrates versus blood clots in the revascularization technique of permanent immature necrotic teeth. The search was done by browsing the PubMed, Scopus and Cochrane databases and using the phrase MeSH: ((AND platelet OR (plasma OR)) OR (blood AND clot) AND (revascularization OR revitalization OR (regenerative AND endodont *))) AND (tooth OR teeth) AND immature). On the 190 articles counted, 5 articles were retained for qualitative synthesis including 64 cases on an average follow-up of 1 year. The data collected made it possible to determine the averages of apical closure, dentine thickness increase, postoperative sensitivity, apical lesion healing, and root edification for each of the two techniques. In view of the good results obtained in the selected articles and the possibility, in case of failure, to perform an apexification technique, this procedure seems to be a reliable alternative to current therapies. Nevertheless, interest of platelet concentrates in the revascularization techniques of immature permanent necrotic teeth must be confirmed

Amelogenesis imperfecta is a genetic disorder that affects the quality and/or quantity of enamel. This alteration can lead to functional and aesthetic consequences, impacting the patients' quality of life. The injected composite technique is an innovative and minimally invasive solution that helps restore affected teeth and improve patients' well-being. In this thesis, we present a clinical case to illustrate the application of the injected composite techniqu

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Covariation between loading environment and mandibular cortical bone distribution in modern humans

    No full text
As the moving element of the manducatory system, the human mandible is central to the functions of ventilation, swallowing, mastication, prehension and phonation, and therefore must withstand complex loads of varying intensity and frequency. Although the morpho-functional interactions between this loading environment and the external human mandibular shape have been partially documented, the morpho-functional approach to internal mandibular bone anatomy remains unclear. Some authors, such as Demes et al. (1984) have postulated that this morpho-functional relationship could be based on a faciolingual asymmetry. In this context, the aim of the present work is to question the ‘mechanistic’ paradigm of Demes et al. (1984) considering new methodological approaches and thus answer the following question: ‘Does the distribution of mandibular cortical bone covary with the loading environment in modern humans?’. Through a systematic review of the literature (Decaup et al., 2023), a comparative morphometric approach within past populations (Decaup et al., 2024a) and modelling of this problem using the finite element method (Decaup et al., 2024b, under review) we found that the distribution of mandibular cortical bone covaries, under certain conditions, with the distribution of strain in unilateral molar masticatory loading conditions. Morphological effects of this covariation are particularly marked in human groups with a high level of mandibular load. Finally, this covariation follows an anteroposterior gradient towards a weaker relationship in the symphyseal anterior regions and a stronger relationship in the posterior regions of the mandibular corpus. The development of an approach combining comparative morphometric analysis and finite element analysis in global-local modelling could provide a better interpretation of the biomechanical impact of the biological diversity of mandibular cortical bone distribution within human populations in future research

Developmental enamel defects are often used as indicators of general health in past archaeological populations. It can be difficult to macroscopically distinguish subtle hypomineralised enamel opacities such as Molar Incisor Hypomineralisation (MIH) from post-mortem staining. The diagnostic guide developed enables the differentiation of developmental hypomineralisation of enamel from taphonomic discolorations. Hypomineralised enamel had higher β-carbonate rates and lower mineral density. Taphonomic discoloration had higher concentration of manganese, iron, copper and lead, determined by means of X-ray fluorescence analyses. Sub adults from 21 archaeological series were examined and included: 4 French series, Sains-en-Gohelle (Pas-de-Calais), Cognac-Saint-Martin (Charente), Beauvais (Oise) and Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac (Gironde) from medieval and post-medieval cemeteries and 17 English series (London) from Roman, medieval and post-medieval cemeteries. We recorded 555 individuals aged between 5-19 years dating from 1st to 19th century. Among 290 specimens with at least one first permanent molar (FPM) present, 42 showed at least one FPM opacity (14.5%). Among the 17 individuals whose teeth were analysed, statistics highlighted 9 cases of MIH (52.9%). MIH prevalence of 9.3% was estimated among the archaeological series which is close to prevalence in living populations in Europe. The identification of MIH among past populations downplays contemporary aetiological hypotheses (e.g. dioxins, bisphenols, antibiotics) without excluding multifactorial aetiology of this pathology.
