Dynamis, the Object of a Philosophical Medicine: An Epistemological Analysis of the Treatise On Ancient Medicine

    No full text
In this study, we propose to analyze the concept of dynamis in the treatise On Ancient Medicine that is part of the Corpus Hippocraticum. We will study it inasmuch as it constitutes a core concept on which a particular epistemological relationship between philosophy and medicine is resolved. There is an extensive hermeneutical tradition that presents this writing as the birth of a scientific medicine detached from all kinds of philosophical reflection. For the author of the letter would seem to behave like an empiricist who seeks as a doctor to get radically rid of philosophy or, at least, that ancient medicine that founds his medical practice in the philosophical theory of the elements. However, despite the partial success of this interpretive tradition, we believe that it runs the risk of offering a fragmentary and incomplete reading of the new epistemological statute that the author seeks to assign to medicine. In our opinion, the author, far from trying to expel the philosophy of practice and medical research, integrates it into a new model of scientific explanation.Fil: Gargiulo, María Teresa. Advanced technology, new spatial dynamic and urban competition: a procedure for evaluating of the italian districts’ competitive potential

    No full text
The global change of economy and production determined by the impact of advanced communication technology are re-launching the role of cities and regions from local to global scale. Global competition among cities induces new spatial dynamic, modifying the traditional territorial hierarchies and concentrating the management of economic, technological and cultural relationships in a few metropolitan areas. Starting from this assumption, this paper gives a contribution for setting up strategies targeted to the promotion of competitive take-off of Italian districts –considered as the most suitable reference unit for this work– closely connected to the strategic resources of each district. In order to pursue this aim, the research work has a twofold goal: - to identify the strategic resources enabling regions to gain a competitive advantage at different territorial levels (international, national, local); - to evaluate the Italian districts’ competitive potential in the international, national and local context. The research work deals with the problem of the international competition among cities with a focus on the territorial aspect of the competition. Therefore, in order to set up a procedure for determining the competitive potential of the Italian districts, we consider apart from variables related to economy and production, also variables related to infrastructure equipment, settlement’s quality, human resources, etc. The main finding of the research work is a subdivision of the 95 Italian “districts” into five classes, according to their present or potential role in the global, national or local competition

Biological Markers in Psychiatry and its relation with translational approaches: brief historical review

    No full text
In recent years, psychiatry has attempted to find biological markers of mental illness in the strict sense or psychiatric disorders with a corporal or biological base. The purpose of this chapter is to schematically describe from the beginning the set of efforts made by biological psychiatry with the goal to find markers for mental illness, explaining the pathogenesis of these illnesses, and possibly providing new therapeutic approaches. This chapter attempts to synthetically and schematically review only a few lines of investigation in current psychiatry. It begins with a discussion about the first biochemical peripheral amines dosed, as primarily tracers or trace amines, which generated the first experiences in Argentina in the late 1960s by Fischer and colleagues. It continues with the development of the concept of windows in neuroendocrine function tests and its relevance. They were used primarily in the 1980s and we display this topic mentioning our studies on the extra hypothalamic action of hypophysotropic peptides, and the relationship of conventional transmitters with these releasing factors. Finally, we include our initial studies from the 1990s, referring to perceptual disturbances in schizophrenia, starting this new phase of exploration. It was cognitive or neuropsychological at first, with translational approaches to humanpsychoses. Finally, we describe electrophysiological exploration, including more sophisticated methods. We review briefly a field that currently has virtually unlimited proportions, hardly reducible to a single line of thought. This is a brief story of a group that had the opportunity to attend, since its inception, as a spectator of a revolution, and at times participating in direct human research approaches, and in some cases, in translational research.Fil: Gargiulo, Ángel José Martín. Invisible Borders. Administrative Barriers and Citizenship in the Italian Municipalities

    No full text
This book analyses residency, a form of municipal membership that plays a strategic role in administrative processes in Italy. Residency is a two-faced juridical status: a means for exercising rights and moving freely within a state territory and, at the same time, a tool of control that operates through identification and registration. Gargiulo investigates residency both historically and theoretically, showing that the status of resident is a special kind of border, namely, a status border, which draws the lines of local citizenship. By explaining that the mechanisms of exclusion from residency work as administrative barriers, and showing their aims and effects in terms of civic stratification and differential inclusion, this book contributes to the debates on local citizenship, borders, and discretionary power
