Existence of anticorrelations for local field potentials recorded from mice reared in standard condition and environmental enrichment
No full textIn the present paper, we analyze local field potentials (LFPs) recorded from the secondary motor cortex (M2) and primary visual cortex (V1) of freely moving mice reared in environmental enrichment (EE) and standard condition (SC). We focus on the scaling properties of the signals by using an integrated approach combining three different techniques: the Higuchi method, detrended fluctuation analysis, and power spectrum. Each technique provides direct or indirect estimations of the Hurst exponent H and this prevents spurious identification of scaling properties in time-series analysis. It is well known that the power spectrum of an LFP signal scales as 1/f(β) with β>0. Our results indicate the existence of a particular power spectrum scaling law 1/f(β) with β<0 for low frequencies (f<4 Hz) for both SC and EE rearing conditions. This type of scaling behavior is associated to the presence of anticorrelation in the corresponding LFP signals. Moreover, since EE is an experimental protocol based on the enhancement of sensorimotor stimulation, we study the possible effects of EE on the scaling properties of secondary motor cortex (M2) and primary visual cortex (V1). Notably, the difference between Hurst's exponents in EE and SC for individual cortical regions (M2) and (V1) is not statistically significant. On the other hand, using the detrended cross-correlation coefficient, we find that EE significantly reduces the functional coupling between secondary motor cortex (M2) and visual cortex (V1)

The mechanical selection process of source segregated plastic materials generates considerable amounts of residues that are commonly named as Plasmix. By means of a life cycle assessment (LCA) modelling, the environmental performances of the main Plasmix management options (thermal treatment, energy recovery, and landfilling) were compared. Six treatment scenarios, with different pre-treatment alternatives, were evaluated. Landfilling after waste washing and Plasmix substitution of coke in a blast furnace represent the most favorable options, since the performances of thermal treatment and energy recovery are worsened by specific emissions of a variety of toxic compounds and heavy metals within plastic materials as additives

Capace di recitare da grandissima professionista quale era un ampio ventaglio di storie e ruoli femminili sulla scena, alla Garbo è riuscito di insinuarsi come poche altre attrici prima di lei tanto nell’immaginario del pubblico maschile che in quello femminile. Avvolta nei sontuosi ed eleganti abiti disegnati per lei dal costumista Clement Andreani, più noto come Adrian, l’ex-commessa svedese di un grande magazzino di Stoccolma s’impose come diva internazionale grazie all’immagine riflessa dalle tante pellicole di Hollywood che la consacrarono modello di seduzione dal 1926 al 1941 (anno del suo ritiro definitivo dal cinema): La carne e il diavolo, La divina, La donna del mistero, Orchidea Selvaggia fino a Anna Christie, Mata Hari, La regina Cristina, Maria Walwska e Ninotchka.
Eppure ciò che ha reso davvero irresistibile il fascino della Garbo, e che ancora oggi a distanza di tanti anni ce ne rende il ricordo così eccezionale, è stata la progressiva immissione nella dimensione fantastica della celebrità cui apparteneva, di uno stile lontanissimo da quello hollywoodiano e legato invece alla conduzione di una vita privata gelosamente custodita, lontano dalla mondanità e dai riflettori. Così la contraddizione tra la proiezione mitica dell’immagine della diva famosa, seducente e sofisticata come appariva sugli schermi cinematografici mondiali, con la sempre più evidente presenza di capi e accessori “quotidiani” provenienti dalla normalità della donna Garbo, diventa un veicolo fondamentale per alimentarne l’aura di personaggio intrigante e controcorrente anche fuori dal palcoscenico. La Garbo impone un’immagine di donna sportiva, minimalista, che preferisce elementi di vestiario androgino come pantaloni, giacche lunghe oversize, maglioni a collo alto, camicie di taglio maschile, trench, cravatte, cappelli a cloche, baschi, feltri, assieme agli inseparabili grandi occhiali da sole, anticipando così l’ambiguità visiva ed esistenziale che sarà distintiva di un’altra grande diva gender crossing come Marlene Dietrich. La Garbo acquista capi all’emporio militare di Los Angeles e si fa confezionare completi pantalone dal sarto maschile Watson su suggerimento di Mercedes de Acosta. Pre-Existing Lymphopenia Increases the Risk of Hospitalization and Death after SARS-CoV-2 Infection
No full textThere is limited information regarding the severity of COVID-19 in immunocompromized patients. We conducted a retrospective cohort study considering the period from 1 March 2020 to 31 December 2020 to determine whether previously existing lymphopenia increases the risk of hospitalization and death after SARS-CoV-2 infection in the general population. The laboratory and hospital discharge databases of the Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Friuli Centrale were used, and 5415 subjects infected with SARS-CoV-2 and with at least one recent absolute lymphocyte count determination before SARS-CoV-2 positivity were included. In total, 817 (15.1%) patients had severe COVID-19. Patients developing severe COVID-19 were more frequently males (44.9% of the severe COVID-19 group vs. 41.5% in the non-severe COVID-19 group; p < 0.0001) and were older (73.2 ± 13.8 vs. 58.4 ± 20.3 years; p < 0.0001). Furthermore, 29.9% of the lymphopenic patients developed severe COVID-19 vs. 14.5% of the non-lymphopenic patients (p < 0.0001). In a logistic regression model, female sex remained a protective factor (OR = 0.514, 95%CI 0.438–0.602, p < 0.0001), while age and lymphopenia remained risk factors for severe COVID-19 (OR = 1.047, 95%CI 1.042–1.053, p < 0.0001 for each additional year of age; OR = 1.715, 95%CI 1.239–2.347, p = 0.0011 for lymphopenia). This provides further information to stratify the risk of COVID-19 severity, which may be an important element in the management of immunosuppressive therapies
