Get PDFThe PhD thesis focus on trademarks. Trademarks are one type of intellectual property right which is very common and popular among rms across the entire economy, but have received so far little attention by academic researchers. Their primarily function is to distinguish the goods or services provided by the trademark's owner from those provided by its competitors: on the one hand the goodor service on top of which the trademark is applied becomes immediately recognizable by consumers; on the other hand, it protects the owner from competitors using its brand illegally. In my work I rely on the most comprehensive dataset on trademarks available at present and analyze the impact of trademarks on rm performance in the very short run (overnight) and in the long run. The thesis is divided into three chapters: the rst chapter summarizes the existing literature on trademarks, the second chapter analyses the impact of weaker trademark protection on stock market returns overnight, the third chapter measures the impact of stronger trademark protection on rm's prots, innovation and market share in the long run

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Understanding collagen interactions and their targeted regulation by novel drugs
No full textIntroduction: Among protein and fibers in the extracellular matrix (ECM), collagen is the most copious and widely employed in cosmetic, food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical industries due to its extensive biocompatible and versatile properties. In the last years, the knowledge about functions of collagens increased and expanded dramatically. Once considered only crucial for the ECM scaffolding and mechanotransduction, additional functional roles have now been ascribed to the collagen superfamily which are defined by other recently discovered domains, supramolecular assembly and receptors. Areas covered: Given the importance of each step in the collagen biosynthesis, folding and signaling, medicinal chemists have explored small molecules, peptides, and monoclonal antibodies to modulate enzymes, receptors and interactions with the physiological ligands of collagen. These compounds were also explored toward diseases and pathological conditions. The authors discuss this providing their expert perspectives on the subject area. Expert opinion: Understanding collagen protein properties and its interactome is beneficial for therapeutic drug design. Nevertheless, compounds targeting collagen-based interactome suffered from the presence of different isoforms for each target and the lack of specific 3D crystal structures able to guide properly drug design
Spatial discretization effects in spanwise forcing for turbulent drag reduction
Get PDFWall-based spanwise forcing has been experimentally used with success by Auteri et al. (Phys. Fluids, vol. 22, 2010, 115103) to obtain large reductions of turbulent skin-friction drag and considerable energy savings in a pipe flow. The spatial distribution of the azimuthal wall velocity used in the experiment was not continuous, but piecewise constant. The present study is a numerical replica of the experiment, based on a set of direct numerical simulations (DNS); its goal is the identification of the effects of spatially discrete forcing, as opposed to the idealized sinusoidal forcing considered in the majority of numerical studies. Regardless of the discretization, with DNS the maximum drag reduction is found to be larger: the flow easily reaches complete relaminarization, whereas the experiment was capped at 33 % drag reduction. However, the key result stems from the observation that, for the piecewise-constant forcing, the apparent irregularities of the experimental data appear in the simulation data too. They derive from the rich harmonic content of the discontinuous travelling wave, which alters the drag reduction of the sinusoidal forcing. A detailed understanding of the contribution of each harmonic reveals that, whenever for example technological limitations constrain one to work far from the optimal forcing parameters, a discrete forcing may perform very differently from the corresponding ideal sinusoid, and in principle can outperform it. However, care should be exercised in comparison, as discrete and continuous forcing have different energy requirements
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
