The Negro in the novels of Rene Maran, 1940
This study of the Negro in the novels of Rene Maran, Frances most prominent contemporary Negro author, is one of several being made at Atlanta University on the Negro in French literature. This attempt to-show how a Negro, the only one ever to receive the Prix Goncourt, portrays his African brothers, is the first American study of Rene Maran's novels. It is hoped that it will be a modest contribution to an almost unexplored field in French literature and that other students of France and her culture will be inspired to make a more extensive study of Rene Maran and his works. The first chapter is devoted to the life of Rene Maran and a discussion of his style and most important works. The second chapter presents the physical characteristics of the Negro as portrayed by Rene' Maran. Emphasis is placed on physical appearance, tribal marks, dress, disease and odors which seem to be especially characteristic of the Negro. The third chapter is devoted to the social characteristics of the Negro with emphasis on home life, food, religion, feasts, and governments. The last chapter will present a summary of the findings of this study. The appendix includes short synopses of each of the novels with Negro characters, and a latter from Monsieur Maran to the writer. aIt is to be regretted that such a small amount of material has been written on Rene Maran. Because of his modesty he has written even less about himself. Biographical material consists principally of Leon Bocquet's "Preface" to le Petit Roi de Chimerie, a fairy story by Rene Maran; le Coeur serre, an autobiography written as a novel; several articles which have appeared in periodicals and the forementioned letter from Monsieur Maran. First editions of all novels, with exception of Le Livre de la brousse, were used. As the latter was unavailable, the second edition (1937) was used. Rene Maran's most important novels on Africa, Batouala, Djouma, Chien de brousse, Le Journal sans date end le Livre de la brousse have been studied. The novelettes Bokorro and Bassarragba have also been used as references but the longer novels have constituted our major interest. Le Petit Roi de Chimerie , though it contains no Negro characters, was quoted because of one excellent example of Rene Maran's style. Less stress has been placed on Le Journal sans date because only one of its characters is a Negro. The writer sincerely appreciates the kindness and help of Rene Maran, whose letter was a source of constant encouragement

A Study on Fashion Design Applying the Image of Rene Magritte’s Works : Focused on Depaysement Technique
The modern fashion that pursues the personality, freedom, and creativity reflects the stream of time. The combination of art reflecting fashion and period representation technique as the trend of modern fashion for doing away with stereotype suggests various possibility of creation and wakes the aesthetic consciousness of potential human being with various designs. Surrealism that appeared as background provided possibility to develop creative designs on 20C had to pursue the overall awareness about human being by revealing the unconscious world having had under pressure and liberating the human. Especially, Rene Magritte (1898~1967) as the creative of surrealism denied automatism that was abstract representation technique. In addition, he did experience the mysteries of world with making normal from ordinary materials and the world of unique painting as well as paying attention and awaking think from us. The expression of Rene Magritte painting that was affected by Giorgio De Chirico makes to open the perspective of us having stereotype by revealing another hidden world of side of all reality.
The author offering the modern fashion design to match up between clothes and depaysement technique that the author studied and analyzed choosing Rene Magritte who was one of the surrealists.
As way of this study, The author referred like previous literatures, other theses, some books and magazines etc.
This study through theoretical consideration is as below.
First, The author analyzed the depaysement technique that is one of Rene Magritte’s main techniques and the world of his works.
Second, The author studied each feature and distribution to three representation techniques from Rene Magritte’s works along depaysement technique.
Third, The author made total 8 clothes applying main concept from image of Rene Magritte’s works.
These are result through theoretical studies.
First, The author have known that Rene Magritte among surrealism artists suggests the possibility of creative think with free arrangement each ordinary object and realistic through arts.
Second, about depaysement technique, main representation technique of Rene Magritte’s works, The author have known to be divided three ways so as the modulation of space, the combination of conflicting image, the transform and change of object.
Third, The author have suggested some examples which are variety and creative modern fashion design through expressive classification of Rene Magritte’s works.
The result that the author got from being made works based on these ideas is as below.
First, The author have confirmed the mind of artist and the expression of subconscious from Rene Magritte who wanted to prove depaysement technique or ideology of surrealism rather than just particular image with matching up fashion in his works.
Second, The author have presented new optical modeling space as being expressed the three-dimensional costume design that combines between body and two-dimensional painting when Rene Magritte’s works spread out for fashion design. Moreover, The author have known that the world of Rene Magritte’s works propose the creative idea to study of all-time modern fashion design and to be possible application to creative and differentiated image source due to graft the art onto the fashion.
Third, The author have known that classified images along three expression ways called the modulation of space, the combination of conflicting image, the transform and change of object in depaysement technique of Rene Magritte’s works suggest possibly spreading out various designs through combination with clothes.
Fourth, The author have known that depaysement which is one of surrealism’s representation technique can expend the width of imagination as being applied clothes by various view and practical use in materials or design elements. For that reason, it built the unique image applying realistic and ordinary objects inside Rene Magritte’s works.
Fifth, The author have known Digital Textile Printing (DTP) technique as the element of practical design is very well matching up expressing the image of Rene Magritte’s works to clothes.;개성과 자유, 독창적인 창의성을 추구하는 현대 패션은 시대적인 흐름과 예술을 반영한다.

The effect of different vineyard management systems on the epigaeic arthropod assemblages in the Cape Floristic Region, South Africa
Thesis (MScConsEcol (Conservation Ecology and Entomology)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa, where wine grape production and
biodiversity conservation are of major importance, innovative management of the
landscape is necessary to integrate the two activities. Alternative farming, such as organic
and biodynamic farming, focuses on the preservation of biological processes in
agroecosystems with the aim of increasing the sustainability of these sytems. It has been
demonstrated in other regions that alternative farming can enhance biodiversity. This
study assessed the potential of alternative vineyard management to conserve biodiversity,
in particular epigaeic arthropod diversity, relative to the more widespread integrated
vineyard management in the CFR. A hierarchical design was used, consisting of three
localities, with three land-uses nested within each locality. The land-uses were alternative
vineyards, integrated vineyards and natural vegetation sites as reference habitats.
Sampling was done in June and October 2006 using pitfall traps. Nested ANOVAs were
used to test for differences in abundance and species richness of the total assemblages,
functional feeding guilds and selected generalized predatory taxa. Assemblage patterns
were assessed using hierarchical agglomerative clustering and non-metric
multidimensional scaling. Canonical correspondence analyses were used to evaluate the
effects of environmental variables, management practices and landscape variables on
community composition. Alternative vineyards supported a significantly higher overall
arthropod abundance and species richness, more diverse predatory, saprophagous,
phytophagous and omnivorous guilds, as well as more abundant and speciose spider and
rove beetle assemblages than the integrated vineyards. Integrated vineyards harboured a
greater abundance of predators, whereas results for nectarivores, wood borers, parasitoids
and carabid beetles were variable. The differences could be explained in part by higher
non-crop vegetation complexity and reduced management intensity of the alternative
vineyards. Community composition was influenced by a combination of management
practices, the surrounding landscape and geographic locality, which highlighted the
interdependence of the cultivated land and its surroundings.Master
The invasive ant Pheidole megacephala on an oceanic island : impact, control and community-level response to management
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Invasive species are among the most important global conservation threats. Their management is one of the key conservation challenges that will have to be addressed in the next few decades. The study of real invasions and their management in natural ecosystems provides an opportunity to gain important information on theoretical and applied aspects of biological invasions.
This project focuses on the broader ecological context of invasive ant management in an ecologically sensitive island habitat. The thesis has three main components: 1) assessing the role of the invasive ant Pheidole megacephala in the ecosystem and evaluating its threat to the system, 2) evaluating a low-impact management program for the ant, and 3) using a community-level approach to assess ecosystem response to ant removal.
The ant occupied almost 30% of the island‘s total land area and reached extremely high densities in some areas. The ant was associated with exotic hemipteran scale insects through trophobiotic mutualisms that facilitated high ant and hemipteran abundances. The highly destructive scale insect Pulvinaria urbicola was among the hemipterans that benefited from ant attendance. High levels of hemipteran feeding resulted in dieback of functionally important and threatened native Pisonia trees, which represented a significant threat to the forest ecosystem.
A management program was initiated in response to this threat, consisting of baiting with selective hydramethylnon-based bait delivered in bait stations, accompanied by detailed pre-and post-baiting monitoring. The method was highly effective at suppressing the ants, whilst preventing bait uptake by non-target organisms. It was also cost-effective and adaptable to ant density in the field, but was only effective over short distances. The method may be applicable to other sensitive environments with similar challenges. After ant control, the ant-scale mutualism was decoupled and the Pu. urbicola population collapsed. There were variable responses in different taxa to the removal of these highly abundant exotic species, the most important of which was the recovery in Pisonia trees. Shoot condition and foliage density improved and there was a decrease in sooty mold. Herbivory on Pisonia increased due to recovery of native canopy herbivores, but the overall impact was far less than that of the exotic hemipterans.
Soil surface arthropods, a group that may have been vulnerable to the treatment method, were unaffected by baiting. Instead, they increased significantly after ant removal, confirming the ant‘s impact on other arthropods. Other ant diversity and non-ant arthropod abundance increased post-baiting, including the endemic ant Pheidole flavens farquharensis and some functionally important insects such as the Indian cockroach.
Natural enemies that interacted predictably with the mutualists were influenced by management. Predators of hemipterans increased significantly after ant removal and were instrumental in the scale population collapse, whereas parasitoids of hemipterans that benefited from the mutualism declined. Additionally, groups that were unrelated to the mutualism were indirectly influenced by management. The natural enemy assemblage as a whole showed recovery to pre-invasion conditions.
The study shows how widely interconnected and influential the ant was in the ecosystem. It highlights the threat of the species in natural systems as well as the complex responses following invasive ant removal. Yet, it also demonstrates the potential to safely and effectively manage the species, thereby raising the opportunity for ecosystem recovery.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Indringerspesies is van die belangrikste globale bedreigings vir natuurbewaring.
Doctora

Program clarification, design, and plan for evaluation of a women's empowerment program within a church setting
This dissertation focuses on the process of clarifying, designing and planning for the evaluation of a Women’s Empowerment Program for individuals who were members of, or affiliated with, a church in an urban community and were interested in self-improvement and growth. The program had been implemented initially by the First Lady of the church (the pastor’s wife). She had requested this evaluation process to assess the needs of the participants and to re-design the program. Maher’s (2000) program planning and evaluation framework was used to complete this process. Literature concerning working with African-American/Latina women and collaboration with faith-based organizations informed the design for the program. This dissertation was conducted with the intent to benefit the specific population of women involved in the program, to contribute to the literature, and to expand knowledge concerning mental health interventions in faith based organizations. Its intention was also to model reaching out to the community for resources in the treatment of diverse populations. Maher’s program planning and evaluation framework consists of four phases: clarification, design, implementation and evaluation. The implementation phase was beyond the scope of this dissertation but an evaluation plan was developed to be utilized during a future implementation. During the Clarification Phase, an assessment of the women’s needs and the relevant context was conducted. Results of the needs assessment revealed that women at the church had difficulties in the areas of (a) emotion-regulation; (b) problem-solving; (c) communication; and (d) spiritual growth, which had an impact on their daily living. The program was re-designed based on the needs identified in the Clarification Phase. The program was entitled the Women’s Empowerment Program and consisted of iii a monthly group designed to teach women skills to improve the identified needs. Following the program design, a plan for evaluation was created in order to provide a documented process that would lead to determining whether the program had added value and benefited the participants. Constraints of the dissertation are noted and recommendations are provided for future implementation and evaluation of the program. Implications for partnerships between faith-based organizations and mental health professionals are also provided.Psy. D.Includes bibliographical referencesby Danielle Rene Narkau
