The Codex Rustici and the fifteenth-century Florentine artisan

    No full text
This paper addresses a well-known yet somehow ‘anonymous’ text, the Codex Rustici. While its name may not be known to all, its illustrations are instantly recognisable: ostensibly an account of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the Codex has been constantly utilized for the sketches of fifteenth-century Florentine churches it contains. Since the eighteenth century at least, these have allowed historians to reconstruct building programmes, plot institutional histories and, importantly, visualize how the city looked before subsequent renovations and demolitions. The Codex Rustici is therefore a common yet peculiar tool for those studying the art and culture of Renaissance Florence: although the distinctive character of its illustrations makes the manuscript immediately identifiable, its substantial text has never been published, and some statements made about its content suggest it has not even been read in its entirety. Our knowledge of its author, Marco di Bartolomeo Rustici, has until now been basic. This paper demonstrates that Rustici’s textual construction of himself stands in direct contrast to the image of him that emerges from statistical and archival information. The suthor argues that a closer analysis of his perception and self-representation, and of his relationship to his city, sheds light on the uses of literacy in fifteenth-century Florence. It broadens our understanding of artistic and poetic self-representation, in particular, and suggests the extent to which a potential to engage in such activities was open not only to the powerful and wealthy

In this paper, the focus is on necessary amendments to the existing legal regulations on agricultural land lease. The author calls on for a separate law on agricultural land lease. With regard to any issues left outside the scope of such law, the relevant provisions of the civil code should apply. In the making of a new model of agricultural land lease, the legislator should draw on the legislative doctrine elaborated in the old EU Member States and the experience of the Agricultural Property Agency in Poland. Moreover, the design of agricultural land lease should meet the current social and economic expectations as the Common Agricultural Policy applies to the Polish agriculture as well. A list of specific proposals of legal solutions that should be contained in the new agricultural land lease model is offered. It includes issues such as the term of lease and its prolongation, transfer of the lessee's rights and obligations to a third party, the effect of the lessee’s or lessor’s death on the legal relation between the lessee and the lessor, lease rentals and their revision during the term, reasons for premature termination of lease, or pre-emptive rights.L ’obbiettivo délia trattazione è l’analisi degli emendamenti che l’Autrice reputa necessari alla normativa riguardante l’affitto dei fondi ru stid .

The ELIXIR-EXCELERATE Train-the-Trainer pilot programme: empower researchers to deliver high-quality training [version 1; referees: 2 approved]

One of the main goals of the ELIXIR-EXCELERATE project from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme is to support a pan-European training programme to increase bioinformatics capacity and competency across ELIXIR Nodes. To this end, a Train-the-Trainer (TtT) programme has been developed by the TtT subtask of EXCELERATE’s Training Platform, to try to expose bioinformatics instructors to aspects of pedagogy and evidence-based learning principles, to help them better design, develop and deliver high-quality training in future. As a first step towards such a programme, an ELIXIR-EXCELERATE TtT (EE-TtT) pilot was developed, drawing on existing ‘instructor training’ models, using input both from experienced instructors and from experts in bioinformatics, the cognitive sciences and educational psychology. This manuscript describes the process of defining the pilot programme, illustrates its goals, structure and contents, and discusses its outcomes. From Jan 2016 to Jan 2017, we carried out seven pilot EE-TtT courses (training more than sixty new instructors), collaboratively drafted the training materials, and started establishing a network of trainers and instructors within the ELIXIR community. The EE-TtT pilot represents an essential step towards the development of a sustainable and scalable ELIXIR TtT programme. Indeed, the lessons learned from the pilot, the experience gained, the materials developed, and the analysis of the feedback collected throughout the seven pilot courses have both positioned us to consolidate the programme in the coming years, and contributed to the development of an enthusiastic and expanding ELIXIR community of instructors and trainers

Anonymization of 3D face models for GDPR compliant outsourcing to 3rd party companies

    No full text
This study investigates whether an automatic anonymization algorithm that takes as input a 3D model of a human face can produce an output model exempt from General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) biometric data definition. The algorithm first uses Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) for registering the source point cloud globally to an oriented template. Next, the alignment is refined using an Iterative Closest Point (ICP) technique. Secondly, a subset of the source point cloud is created using a fixed radius vector on each template point resulting in the corresponding face contour. Finally, the algorithm uses a point cloud template to remove the unnecessary facial features and converts the point cloud to a mesh. The quality of the anonymization has been evaluated using a survey assessment of 100 participants. The latter resulted in half of the participants failing to recognize any of the anonymized models, one-fifth scoring one out of four correct. Only 2% correctly associated all the models to the right individual.CSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin

Euro BioImaging Preparatory Phase II Project

    No full text
Despite significant advances in biological and biomedical imaging and analysis, the resources for identifying and accessing the software tools for image processing and analysis are limited. The survey of the Euro-BioImaging community emphasised the importance of such a resource and the requirement for its construction. In this Deliverable, we summarise the technical outputs from a collaborative meeting and follow up work that aims to build the database and tools that are the foundation of the Imaging Resource Portal (IRP). We also provide analysis of the utility of an existing open source tool repository technology, bio.tools, as a foundation for the IRP and an analysis of the existing metadata models and ontologies for use in the IRP

The topic of this doctoral dissertation was dictated by a need to address the lack of critical studies on Brendan Behan. Behan s work appears as a very heterogeneous one, merging various genres and styles, mixing orality and writing, texts and images. Through an investigation of the author s production (novel, recorded books, drama, radio-plays and features, poetry, short stories and sketches), this dissertation aims to show how the concept of memory underpins his literature. The title of the dissertation highlights the various aspects of the term memory explored in this volume. Memory is in fact a hazy concept that may refer to the mental faculty of retaining and recalling past experiences and to the act of remembrance and the attempt at defining the individual s identity, as well as to the duty of preserving and transmitting collective history and culture. As memory is never easy to define and implies many aspects, different approaches have been taken into account (philosophical, psychological, sociological, anthropological and linguistic). This project is framed by the larger field of Irish autobiographical studies which remains open to further investigations, and our aim has been to bring a modest contribution to it. In the dissertation, we explore above all the connections between memory and imagination. Although Behan s literature may be considered as the author s critical view on Irish society and, thus, brought in line with the realism of the 1920s and 1930s, we shall underline the importance of imagination in the process of recollection and the fictional aspect of autobiographical writing. Literature is for Behan the medium of a personal introspection through recollection and imagination. Telling his personal story is for the author a way of forgetting, hence healing, individual and collective trauma. But at the same time it is an attempt to guarantee the author s infinite presence.TOULOUSE2-SCD-Bib. electronique (315559903) / SudocSudocFranceF
