No full textThis volume presents a series of articles on the pivotal role played by eating and drinking in the formation of social relationships in a variety of social and cultural contexts. Based on extensive anthropological fieldwork, they describe the everyday lives and festive mores of ordinary people in areas that range from the organisation of small households or daily snacks to the preparation of major feasts and lavish banquets. They explore the importance of rights and obligations and the different roles played by, on the one hand, pride and honour, pleasure and passion, and caring and sharing, and on the other, denial, greed and control. They reflect such dichotomies as private-public, nature-culture, tradition-modernity and local-global, also discussing gender roles, social differences, hierarchy and power and the meanings of breastfeeding and commensality. Makan dan minum bersama: feasting commensality in Minahasa, Indonesia
No full textLa distribution et la consommation de la nourriture jouent des rôles assez importants dans la culture festive en Minahasa. Dans ce contexte, la formule standard «makan dan minum bersama», qui inclut des notions de partager, ainsi que celles de communauté et d’égalité, est exprimée comme invitation et encouragement aux invités à participer au repas commun. L’idéal chrétien d’une commensalité totale, dans les fêtes, est réalisé plus concrètement dans certaines fêtes plutôt informelles du style «picnic», où ceux qui donnent et ceux qui reçoivent sont largement identiques et où les différences sociales et les hiérarchies deviennent presque invisibles, voire niées. Aux grands banquets comme les fêtes de mariage, la commensalité n’est pas offerte d’une manière indiscriminatrice comprenant tous les participants, mais les pratiques contextuelles refléchissent les différences temporaires ou permanentes au regard de leurs positions, du statut ainsi que des relations sociales. Ces fêtes se présentent comme des occasions où l’ambition des hôtes de pouvoir augmenter leur prestige en montrant leurs richesses et leur générosité sont en concurrence avec les valeurs égalitaires d’intégration et d’uniformité exprimées par la communité.The preparation, distribution and consumption of food play prominent roles in Minahasa feasting culture. In this context, the standard formula is “makan dan minum bersama”, which encompasses notions of sharing, community and equality, and is used as an invitation and encouragement for guests to participate in the communal meal. The Christian ideal of an all-inclusive commensality is repeatedly emphasised at feasts, and most fully realised at informal picnic-style gatherings where food givers and receivers are largely identical and social differences and hierarchies become blurred or are even denied. At large banquets like wedding feasts, commensality is not offered indiscriminately and is not all-encompassing. The contextual practices reflect temporary or permanent differences in social positions, status and relationships. At such feasts, the hosts’ ambition to enhance their prestige by ostentatiously demonstrating wealth and generosity is in competition with the community’s egalitarian values of uniformity and integration
