    Fault-Tolerant ST-Diameter Oracles

    We study the problem of estimating the ST-diameter of a graph that is subject to a bounded number of edge failures. An f-edge fault-tolerant ST-diameter oracle (f-FDO-ST) is a data structure that preprocesses a given graph G, two sets of vertices S, T, and positive integer f. When queried with a set F of at most f edges, the oracle returns an estimate Db of the ST-diameter diam(G−F, S, T), the maximum distance between vertices in S and T in G− F. The oracle has stretch σ ≥ 1 if diam(G−F, S, T) ≤ Db ≤ σ diam(G−F, S, T). If S and T both contain all vertices, the data structure is called an f-edge fault-tolerant diameter oracle (f-FDO). An f-edge fault-tolerant distance sensitivity oracles (f-DSO) estimates the pairwise graph distances under up to f failures. We design new f-FDOs and f-FDO-STs by reducing their construction to that of all-pairs and single-source f-DSOs. We obtain several new tradeoffs between the size of the data structure, stretch guarantee, query and preprocessing times for diameter oracles by combining our black-box reductions with known results from the literature. We also provide an information-theoretic lower bound on the space requirement of approximate f-FDOs. We show that there exists a family of graphs for which any f-FDO with sensitivity f ≥ 2 and stretch less than 5/3 requires Ω(n3/2) bits of space, regardless of the query time

    Automata-Theoretic Characterisations of Branching-Time Temporal Logics

    Characterisations theorems serve as important tools in model theory and can be used to assess and compare the expressive power of temporal languages used for the specification and verification of properties in formal methods. While complete connections have been established for the linear-time case between temporal logics, predicate logics, algebraic models, and automata, the situation in the branching-time case remains considerably more fragmented. In this work, we provide an automata-theoretic characterisation of some important branching-time temporal logics, namely CTL* and ECTL* interpreted on arbitrary-branching trees, by identifying two variants of Hesitant Tree Automata that are proved equivalent to those logics. The characterisations also apply to Monadic Path Logic and the bisimulation-invariant fragment of Monadic Chain Logic, again interpreted over trees. These results widen the characterisation landscape of the branching-time case and solve a forty-year-old open question

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Origin-Equivalence of Two-Way Word Transducers Is in PSPACE

    We consider equivalence and containment problems for word transductions. These problems are known to be undecidable when the transductions are relations between words realized by non-deterministic transducers, and become decidable when restricting to functions from words to words. Here we prove that decidability can be equally recovered the origin semantics, that was introduced by Bojanczyk in 2014. We prove that the equivalence and containment problems for two-way word transducers in the origin semantics are PSPACE-complete. We also consider a variant of the containment problem where two-way transducers are compared under the origin semantics, but in a more relaxed way, by allowing distortions of the origins. The possible distortions are described by means of a resynchronization relation. We propose MSO-definable resynchronizers and show that they preserve the decidability of the containment problem under resynchronizations. {

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
