The 'Chronica Polonorum' by Bishop Vincentius of Cracow. Preliminary remarks about its historical context, violence and its use

A masterpiece of medieval scholarship, the Chronica Polonorum written by Bishop Vincentius of Cracow (c.1150–1223) traced the history of the Poles from time immemorial to the lifetime of its author. It is the second oldest Polish narrative source and as such it established an authoritative dynastically sponsored history of the Piast realm. Its author, a learned, yet unassuming, cleric achieved the goal which he proclaims in the Prologue to this work - his construct of the Polish history influenced the way history of the Poles was written ever since. In his exposition of the history of the Poles, Vincentius places a specific emphasis on violence: its use, its purpose and its justification. This article presents the historical context to the commissioning of the Chronicle and aims to explore various use of violence ultimately serving to construct Casimir the Just’s claim to the throne

New Versions of the Tales of Gallus Anonymus in the Chronicle of Master Vincentius

    No full text
Using chosen examples, the author analyses the meaning of the changes made by Vincent (Wincenty) Kadłubek also known as Master Vincentius, to the tales found in the chronicle of Gallus Anonymus. Nothing much can be said of the literary or oral sources which may have served as a basis for Vincentius’s reworking of these stories. A detailed comparison of the corresponding fragments in both chronicles leads us to an understanding of how Vincent understood Gallus’s text. Vincent reinforced some meanings gleaned from Gallus, and eliminated others. However, even when building an alternate tale of the childhood of Kazimierz Odnowiciel (Casimir I the Restorer), Vincent always respects the structure of Gallus’s account

A Dragon is not the Same as Another Dragon – or on the Origin of Dragonish Creatures in Kronika polska (Polish Chronicle) by Master Vincentius (Wincenty) Called Kadłubek

In the article the author tried to show the relations between Chronicle by Gallus Anonymus and Kronika Polska by Wincenty Kadłubek with respect to the use of the Latin words draco and holophagus. In his text Anonymus used the term draco with respect to the main protagonist of his work, Boleslaus III the Wry-mouthed, owing to which the term became a positive epithet describing a ruler. Vincentius Kadłubek borrowed the term draco from Anonymus and used it in the same context; however, to name an evil dragon appearing in Kronika Polska the author created his own term: holophagus. Hence it seems that in Kadłubek's text there is a division into two kinds of dragons: draco – a dragon that has positive connotations, and holophagus that seems to take all the negative associations so far connected with the dragon. In our opinion we owe this division of dragonish terms in Kadłubek's work, holophagus as the evil dragon, and draco – a positive one, or an epithet describing the members of the ruling dynasty, to the source that Vincentius used, which is Gallus Anonymus' Chronicle

The Philosophical Reading of Master Vincentius

    No full text
Educated most probably in Paris, Wincenty, or Master Vincentius, called Kadłubek (d. 1223), was a lawyer, advisor to Duke Casimir II the Just (Kazimierz Sprawiedliwy) and, subsequently, bishop of Cracow. His chronicle, compiled on Casimir’s commission before 1207–8, is a decent representative of the twelfth-century renaissance. Firstly, we established the algorithm for the numerical comparison of the Chronicle and his supposed source; secondly, we took into account some of the writings of the Greek and Roman philosophers taught in the schools of 12th century and known by writers of the same period. The essay seeks to identify crypto-quotes in Wincenty’s chronicle, where a considerable number of unlabeled opinions by other authors – philosophers, poets, and so on – are potentially traceable. We furthermore aimed at reconstructing the list of books used by the chronicler as a source or reference material. We have assumed, as a principle, that a single citation from one work would not legitimize the statement that the chronicler knew directly that source. With two or three quotations from one work, we seek to establish the reasons why these quotations are in the Chronicle. The results obtained have significantly enlarged the number of (hitherto-known) quotes from Plato’s Timaeus (in Calcidius’s translation), Rhetorica ad Herennium, Seneca’s Moral Letters, and Boethius’s De consolatione philosophiae. In this context, we have taken into account, for the first time, the logical texts by Aristotle and Boethius, discovering in Vincentius’s chronicle traces of the reading of the Topics and On Sophistical Refutations (by the former author) and of De topicis differentiis (by the latter). After a thorough comparison with all the works of Cicero and a critical analysis of the quotations accepted by our predecessors, we retained only one source: the De senectute. We have also excluded the possible evidence of Kadłubek’s knowledge of Macrobius. Our contribution is of philological nature as it seeks to determine the relation and dependencies between Historia Polonica and its philosophical sources. We discuss the nature of these relationships and their philosophical character in other studies. The present essay forms, we believe, a convenient point of departure for further research on philosophical aspects of Wincenty’s output and on the reception of philosophy in Poland in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century

AI-Assisted Design & Optimization for Predictive Maintenance: A Case Study using Deep Learning and Search Metaheuristics for Structural Health Monitoring in Aviation

    No full text
One of the classical solutions to maintain the aircraft structural integrity is to rely on the analysis of non-destructive testing (NDT) inspector with various inspection methods. However, it is relatively expensive in matter of time and costs to train human resources until the certification is reached. Further, in majority of the cases of aircraft scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, most of the detected damages are far below the damage tolerance limit and therefore are considered as a costly false positive because such inspections generally require additional downtime. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) tries to reduce the wasteful resources in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) industry by signaling such false positives during the maintenance process by becoming an integral part of the structure itself. On the other hand, there has been an increase in using the artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies such as computational heuristics and machine learning in many areas of human civilization which includes voice and face recognition, languages translation, and automated driving. There has been a lot of interest on implementing AI to assist SHM in maintaining airworthiness while driving the cost down. Nevertheless, the maintenance of airworthiness (such as but not limited to, EASA Part 145/M and FAA CFR Part 21) is a heavily regulated area and are not easily changed. The current state of the art was captured in the literature review. This includes recent developments of guided wave based SHM and the parameter optimization as well as recent trends and advances in artificial intelligence such as machine and deep learning. The findings from the state of the art were used as the basis to determine the research problem and to propose the solution. The first part of the proposed solution consisted of a short review the damage growth assumption within the damage tolerance framework and the used methodology to generate and capture Lamb wave signal within Finite Element (FE) environment. This methodology is a deterministic solution that can be partially used for solving continuous optimization in deterministic sensor placement problem. It was further expanded to include a semi-stochastic approach to address nonpredictable damage location that includes some metaheuristics search such as genetic algorithm and swarm intelligence. The ultimate first part of solution was a compromise between the deterministic and semi-stochastic actuator-sensor topology. The second part of the proposed solution was the investigation on whether deep learning can be used to treat the Lamb wave signal given the configuration obtained from the first part of the proposed solution. To do so, an assumption based on converging probability measures and generalization bound in deep learning must be taken. Then, the approach is to represent the entity of the captured Lamb wave signal in time-frequency domain either as randomly sampled spectrogram or layers of joined spectrograms. After the training, the hypothesis was validated with A/B Testing. Then, the research was expanded to understand the scalability level of deep learning for SHM for given data size, model parameters, and restriction on physical memory. In this sense, the signal representations were trained sequentially with an example of in hybrid convolutional recurrent network. The investigation was focused on stability behavior of convoluted-recurrent modelling for variable spectrogram length and the experimental validation of the model for classification of the Lamb wave spectrogram signals.
