    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     The influence of global climate change on Cladocora caespitosa bank in the National Park Mljet

    Tijekom istraživanja u 2018. godini utvrđene su povećane temperature mora (temperaturne anomalije) do 29 °C u Velikom jezeru (NP Mljet). Negativan utjecaj povišene temperature mora vidljiv je prvenstveno kao odumiranje (nekroza) tkiva na kamenim koraljima te kao mortalitet jedinki i smanjenje populacija. Usporedba promjena u Velikom jezeru u zadnjih 20 godina kod grebena koralja pokazuje pozitivnu korelaciju između povišenja temperature mora i povećanja nekroze tkiva i smrtnosti koralja. Mjerenjem brzine rasta čaški koralja radiografskom metodom utvrđene su manje vrijednosti brzine rasta za razdoblje od 2002. do 2018. godine u odnosu na razdoblje od 1980. do 2002. godine. Rast čaški kolonija pokazuje pozitivnu korelaciju s prosječnom godišnjom temperaturom mora u Velikom jezeru. Brzina rasta vrste Cladocora caespitosa na grebenu izmjerena u ovom radu (od 1,75 mm do 5,67 mm godišnje) podudara se s rezultatima istraživanja ove vrste u Sredozemnom moru. Koralj C. caespitosa pokazuje stupnjeve oštećenja populacija vezano za temperaturne anomalije. Uz nekrozu tkiva polipa koralja utvrđeno je i izbacivanje simbiontskih zooksantela (engl. coral bleaching), što je dokaz temperaturnog šoka. Značajan je udio novih nekroza unutar istraživanih kvadrata na grebenu utvrđenih prilikom ovog istraživanja tijekom 2018. godine. Invazivna alga Caulerpa cylindracea i riba papigača Sparisoma cretense velike su prijetnje grebenu koralja C. caespitosa u Velikom jezeru.The research conducted in 2018. showed an increased sea temperature (temperature anomaly) which reached 29°C in Veliko jezero (Mljet National Park). Negative impact of an increased sea temperature is primarily visible through tissue necrosis of stony corals. Comparison of changes in Veliko jezero in the last 20 years on coral reef shows a positive correlation between increased sea temperature and necrosis of corals and mortality. Measuring the growth rate of the corals using X-ray method, lower values of growth rate for the period from 2002 to 2018 were determined compared to the period from 1980 to 2002. The growth of the coral colony shows a positive correlation with the average annual sea temperature in Veliko jezero. The growth rate of the Cladocora caespitosa species on the reef measured in this paper (from 1.75 mm to 5.67 mm per year) is consistent with the results gathered in the study in the Mediterranean Sea. Coral C. caespitosa shows degrees of population damage due to temperature anomalies. Along with necrosis, coral bleaching was also detected, which is a proof of temperature shock. Significant share of new necrosis was established within the investigated squares at the reef during this research in 2018. Invasive algae Caulerpa cylindracea and parakeet fish Sparisoma cretense are great threats to the coral reef of C. caespitosa in Veliko jezero

    Korištenje plastike neprestano raste od sredine dvadesetog stoljeća, a s njime i količina mikroplastike u morima diljem svijeta. Plastika sve češće zamjenjuje druge materijale zbog svojih povoljnih svojstava, ali se zbog nepotpune razgradnje nakuplja u morskom okolišu u obliku krupnog plastičnog otpada te čestica promjera manjeg od 5 milimetara, mikroplastike. Mikroplastika u morima ima štetan utjecaj na živi svijet: ulazi u probavni sustav morskih organizama, a toksični spojevi koje na sebe privlači nakupljaju se i prenose kroz hranidbene lance te s vremenom dolaze do čovjeka. Istraživanja su pokazala proporcionalan porast mikroplastike i gustoće naseljenosti određenog područja. Potrebno je provesti standardizaciju u načinu prikupljanja podataka kako bi bilo moguće praćenje stanja u vremenu i prostoru. Potrebna su dodatna istraživanja mogućnosti bioakumulacije toksičnih tvari u mikroplastici. Posljednjih je godina problem mikroplastike sve zamjećeniji i poznatiji. Međutim, još su mnoga područja neistražena, pogotovo ona vezana uz vrlo sitne čestice, nanoplastiku, koja je potencijalno još veća opasnost za živi svijet od krupnije mikroplastike.The use of plastic has constantly been increasing since the middle of the 20th century. As a consequence, the amount of microplastic in the marine environment worldwide has also risen. Nowadays, plastic more often replaces other materials because of its good qualities. Its negative feature is incomplete degradation, which causes accumulation of big particles in marine environment, as well as small ones (<5 mm) called microplastic. Microplastic in seas has a negative impact on marine biota: it enters the digestive system, causing the accumulated toxins to be transferred through the food chains and eventually end up in humans. Studies demonstrated a positive relationship between microplastic and human population density. There is a need for the standardization of data collecting, which is important for the evaluation of spatial and temporal trends. Additional researches of contaminant bioaccumulation are also necessary. Lately the microplastic issue has been more acknowledged. Still, many questions arise and wait to be solved, especially those connected with the smallest particles called nanoplastics, which are potentially even bigger threat for the environment

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
