    L'insegnamento della lingua inglese e i disturbi specifici dell'apprendimento

    No full text

The Guerin House in Jockey Hollow

    No full text
Joshua Guerin, his wife and 8 children lived in a small house on an average size farm of 76 acres. Guerin served as a sergeant in the Morris County militia and occasionally hauled supplies in his wagon for the army. He allowed the army to graze horses in his pasture and sold hay and firewood to the army. Soldiers were even briefly quartered in his house. Like many of his neighbors Guerin's property also suffered damages from the army's encampment. Soldiers stole potatoes, rye, sheep, tools and even some of his wife's clothing. Additionally, soldiers burned his fences and let horses loose in his wheat field resulting in the loss of half his crop. The house is currently used by park staff as a residence and is not open to the public.Original file name fullsizeoutput_128c (2).jp

    Guerin-Lacuesta: un cine español renovado

    No full text

The development of functional perovskites for future technologies can be achieved though the combinatorial synthetic method of evaporative physical vapour deposition (HT-ePVD) which provides a direct low temperature route to anion stoichiometric materials. When combined with the ability to control and vary precisely the composition of thin film libraries of materials, high-throughput methods of screening and characterisation provides a rapid experimental determination of the structure/function relationship. This review of the use of HT-ePVD shows that controlled cationic substitutions in A and/or B sites can easily be explored, as can the effect of anionic substitution. This is exemplified in using this approach for a wide range of perovskite systems, where the tuning of the functional properties through cation substitution has application in a broad range of technologies

Population differences in immune responses to Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccination in infancy.

Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination induces a marked increase in the interferon (IFN)-gamma response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis purified protein derivative (Mtb PPD) in UK adolescents, but not in Malawian adolescents. We hypothesized that Mtb PPD-induced IFN-gamma after BCG vaccination would be similar in infants from these 2 countries. Infants were vaccinated with BCG during the first 3-13 weeks of life. Three months after BCG vaccination, 51 (100%) of 51 UK infants had an IFN-gamma response to Mtb PPD, compared to 41 (53%) of 78 of Malawian infants, in whom responses varied according to their season of birth. We conclude that population differences in immune responses after BCG vaccination are observed among infants, as well as among young adults

Physical vapor deposition method for the high-throughput synthesis of solid-state material libraries

    No full text
A method that combines coevaporation of pure elements from multiple finite-size sources on temperature-controlled substrates with independently controlled source shutters has been used for the synthesis of solid-state material combinatorial libraries. The source shutters are positioned to achieve a controlled gradient of the deposited elements across the substrate and are fixed during the course of deposition. Choice of the shutter position and the rate of deposition for each source allow the direct synthesis of continuous and controlled materials of varying composition. There are significant advantages of the method over alternatives which rely on sequential deposition and subsequent heat treatment to produce thin film materials. The parameters governing the creation of gradients have been identified and defined. Simulations and experimental data have been compared in the case of a single source. Results are presented for the synthesis of a ternary alloy library to demonstrate the methodology

Material optimisation for optical data storage

High throughput synthesis and screening methodologies of optical data storage materials have allowed an in depth study of more than 4000 compositions. We report on the optical and electrical compositional dependence of these materials

The response of human dendritic cells to recombinant adenovirus, recombinant Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette Guerin and biolistic methods of antigen delivery: different induction of contact-dependant and soluble signals.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are the most potent antigen presenting cells for inducing T-cell immune responses. The ability to grow human DCs from monocyte precursors provides an abundant source of these cells, which can be modified in vitro to present antigens. Re-administration of modified DCs to patients as vaccines has been shown in some cases to induce immune responses against cancer and infectious disease. Gene delivery to DCs provides an intracellular source of antigen for efficient and persistent loading of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules. The aim of this study was to use monocyte-derived DCs (MD-DCs) from healthy donors to compare in vitro gene transfer, mediated by adenovirus, M. bovis Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) and biolistic delivery. Efficiency of transfection and effect on DC phenotype, allostimulatory capacity and cytokine secretion was investigated. Adenovirus and BCG both showed a comparable ability to transfect MD-DCs, whereas the biolistic delivery by gene gun was unsuccessful in the reporter gene delivery. BCG transfection promoted MD-DC maturation as is apparent in the surface phenotype, allostimulatory capacity and cytokine secretion from cells. In comparison, adenovirus and biolistic delivery had a reduced effect on MD-DCs although enhancement of co-stimulatory and MHC molecule expression occurred in the cells of some donors. Both BCG and adenovirus represent useful vectors for gene transfer to human DCs. The effect of BCG on DC maturation may provide additional signals for the induction of antigen-specific T-cell responses
