Hunting for dwarf galaxies hosting the formation and coalescence of compact binaries
Here we introduce the latest version of the GAMESH model, capable to consistently account for the formation and evolution of compact binary systems along the cosmic assembly of a Milky Way (MW)-like galaxy, centered on a local group volume resolving a large population of dwarf satellites. After describing the galaxy assembly process and how the formation of binary systems is accounted for, we summarize some recent findings on the properties and evolution of low-metallicity dwarf galaxies hosting the birth/coalescence of stellar/compact binaries generating GW150914-like signals. Finally, we focus on the mass and orbital properties of the above compact binary candidates assessing their impact on the resulting coalescence times and on selecting suitable galaxy hosts

Thermal History of Micrometeoroids during the atmospheric entry
INTRODUCTION
Micrometeoroids (MMs) represent the largest mass flux of
extraterrestrial matter to the present-day Earth (Love S. G. and
Brownlee D. E. 1993 Icarus, 89, 26) and their flux was probably even
larger during the heavy bombardment period, betweem 4 and 3.8 Gy
ago. Micrometeoroids may have been the dominant source of organic
carbon and may have contributed significantly to the delivery of water
on the primitive Earth (Gounelle M. et al. 2005 GCA, 69, 3431). Upon
atmospheric entry micrometeoroids suffer a frictional heating because of
which their surface temperature rapidly reaches values as high as 1000
°K or greater. At these temperatures organic compounds evaporate or
decompose. Most of the current models pertaining this topic assume the
temperature of the particle as homogeneous through the whole volume.
However, micrometeorites collected on the Earth’s surface show
evidences that thermal gradients developed during the atmospheric
passage (Genge M. J. et al. 1997 GCA, 61, 5149). The existence of these
gradients may allow the survival of organic species in the interior of
micrometeorites
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Radiative transfer of ionizing radiation through gas and dust: grain charging in star-forming regions
The presence of charged dust grains is known to have a profound impact on the physical evolution of the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM). Despite its importance, this process is still poorly explored in numerical simulations due to its complex physics and the tight dependence on the environment. Here, we introduce a novel implementation of grain charging in the cosmological radiative transfer code crash. We first benchmark the code predictions on a series of idealized dusty H ii regions created by a single star, in order to assess the impact of grain properties on the resulting spatial distribution of charges. Secondly, we perform a realistic radiative transfer simulation of a star-forming region extracted from a dusty galaxy evolving in the Epoch of Reionization. We find that ∼13 per cent of the total dust mass gets negatively charged, mainly silicate and graphite grains of radius 10−3 μm. A complex spatial distribution of grain charges is also found, primarily depending on the exposure to stellar radiation and strongly varying along different lines of sight, as a result of radiative transfer effects. We finally assess the impact of grain properties (both chemical composition and size) on the resulting charge distribution. The new implementation described here will open up a wide range of possible studies investigating the physical evolution of the dusty ISM, nowadays accessible to observations of high- and low- redshift galaxies
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
