ITALIAN UNIVERSITIES ACROSS TIME.A LONGITUDINAL ANALYSIS OF THE DIFFUSION OF ITALIAN UNIVERSITIES AND THEIR DETERMINANTS.

The dissertation deals with the expansion of the endowment of higher education institutions in Italy and the driving forces behind this process. The focus has been mainly on macro level variables, observing how the aggregate number of universities and satellite universities evolved through time, since the unification of Italy to nowadays. The dissertation has been organized on the basis of two main objects of analysis: the first part deals with the increase of universities operating in the country, while the second part deals with the diffusion of satellite universities. For each of the two objects of analysis we had both a descriptive and analytic purpose: at first we concentrate on describing how the process of founding of new universities (and afterwards, their modern extension, satellite universities) developed through time. On a second stage the focus of attention moved to the analytic level: we investigate under which circumstances a new university or a new satellite university is opened. Which are the features at local and national level that more likely affect the rate of founding of a new university or a satellite campus? We developed a set of hypothesis that mainly refer to the three domains: a) institutional and organizational processes; b) economic factors; c) demand driven processes. With respect to the diffusion of universities, findings from our statistical models suggest that expansion of universities in the last thirty years has been mainly driven by factors that can be associated to the demand for higher education, with a distribution of universities mainly in highly populated areas and with good economic performances. As far as satellite universities are concerned, findings from our model suggest that again the phenomenon may be interpreted as demand-driven, but strongly associated with a tendency to implement imitative processes among peers. Referring to the notion of isomorphism and legitimacy developed by new institutional literature, imitative processes seem to work both between and within satellite universities. Once the new form of organization begins to be accepted and legitimated, a sort of race for following the new “fashion” spreads among universities. The same occurs among satellite universities that become autonomous universities: once become “adult” they tend to perpetuate the same scheme that gave them birth. The latter may be identified as a sort of intergenerational imitative process, that could be traced back -although in a variant version- to the case of mimetic isomorphism described in new institutional theory

"Transizioni occupazionali di giovani e giovani adulti in Europa. Evidenze da quattro paesi"

The paper deals with transitions into and out of the labour market made by young and young adults (15-34 years old) in four European countries (Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom), each of them characterized by a different institutional context: a different welfare model, a specific employment regime and a different educational system. The paper is based on EU-SILC longitudinal data, analyzed using event history analysis techniques. The time range considered is 2006-2011, divided in a first period (2006-08) considered as a pre-crisis period and a second one (2009-11) characterized by the early stages of the crisis. Results show a disadvantage for those entering the labour market with a temporary contract, a common evidence for all the countries analyzed. Besides, a higher educational title reduces the risk of negative transitions, although with different intensity in the countries analyzed, while gender differences widely vary from country to country. The institutional conditions specific to the country affect the shape of transitions, showing a pronounced disadvantage for the South-European model typical of Italy and, although a little less marked, for the United Kingdom. Finally, a deterioration of opportunities as a consequence of worsened economic conditions is observable only for some of the transitions considered.JRC.DDG.01 - Econometrics and applied statistic

In this book the author investigates the digital image proliferation of our times from an interdisciplinary point of view. Starting from the Visual Culture theoretical frame, Valentina Mignano explores the ways in which we interact with the screen, dealing with the "screen experience" in the first years of the network societ

Torsion Test vs. Other Methods to Obtain the Shear Strength of Elastic-Plastic Adhesives

Nowadays adhesive joints are more and more used; therefore, a precise and reliable shear strength measurement of these joints is necessary to design and predict a final components’ performance. This work aimed to assess the shear strength value of adhesively joined ceramics (SiC, Si3N4) and steel in the case of an elasto‐plastic (ductile) joining material (Loctite EA 9321 AERO) by an experimental campaign and associated analytical modelling. The joined samples were tested using a single lap offset test in compression (SLO), an asymmetrical 4‐point bending test (A4PB, ASTM C1469), and by torsion on fully joined hourglass shaped samples (THG). A simple model based on the elastic‐plastic response in shear was proposed to fit the torque‐rotation curve measured in the torsion tests. The results showed that, with the adopted test methods and conditions, and by using the model, consistent values of shear strength could be obtained by torsion tests

Joining of carbon fibre reinforced polymer to Al-Si alloy for space applications

The joining of hypereutectic Al-Si alloy heat pipes to CRFP skins has been studied for radiator panel applications. Three different epoxy adhesives (two thermal conductive adhesives and one high-strength structural one) were used and mechanically characterised before and after thermal cycling. Two adhesives gave the most promising results, in terms of mechanical strength (apparent shear ~ 25 MPa for 100 μm thick lap joints). Thermal cycling (10 cycles between −30°C and +90 °C) did not significantly affect the mechanical properties of the joints or the failure propagation mode. The use of the thermal conductive adhesive could also guarantee good thermal conductivity of the designed panel

    Shear tests on joined materials

Results of an experimental investigation on brittle and non-brittle joining materials for ceramics tested in torsion will be presented and discussed. SiC hourglass shaped samples have been joined by glass-ceramics or by adhesives. The hourglass shape must be designed to minimize stress concentration and have shear stress only in the joined area. When the joining material is purely brittle (glass-ceramics), the shear strength is evaluated from the maximum of the torque/rotation curve. In the case of non purely brittle joining materials (adhesives) the joined area must be gradually reduced to a ring-shaped area until size independent results are obtained and the maximum of the torque/ rotation curve can be used to evaluate the shear strength. Modelling results help understanding the failure mode and therefore the meaning of the measured strength

Retirement in a Context of Strong Institutional Uncertainty and Territorial Diversities: The Case of Italy

    No full text
Italy’s demographic structure has changed greatly over the last 50 years: a diminishing number of workers have to support the pensions of a growing number of retirees. Therefore, several reforms aimed at reorganizing the pension system followed one another, affecting the set of opportunities available to individuals. Given the structure of the labor market, retirement decisions in Italy have been strongly differentiated by gender and from a regional point of view (center-north vs south). However, recent changes in pension policies have increased the risk of social inequalities across generations, with younger cohorts benefiting from a far less generous system, with a lower substitution rate and being forced to extend their working careers

The paper will focus on the analysis of Guido Crepax revolutionary comic book character Valentina that belongs to the golden age of the Italian comic-book genre fumetto. The aim is to explore whether Guido Crepax Valentina character was a "living doll" filling male fantasies of her creator or she was a woman empowered by her author struggling for many of the values of the women's culture that feminists today are trying to introduce into the mainstream. It also addresses research questions that focus on comic books and gender and empowerment at the decade of sexual liberation.Through Valentina case study the present paper is going to study an approach on the concept of woman in comics, and touch the border of female empowerment issue in contemporary world taking in consideration that her revolutionary strong and independent figure was born in a society where women have been frequently viewed as passive and represented as inferior to men and where questions of sexuality were considered taboo. Despite the fact that she angered some feminists by the way she was portrayed as an object of male gaze or a damsel in distress, there is nothing anti-feminist about Valentina. The aim here is to uncover feminist themes in the stories of Valentina and to explore what empowered her and made her a contemporary icon of style and symbol of liberated women
