The essay is part of a volume entitled: "Projects for Europe International architecture and research developed by young researchers". The volume collects essays by young researchers from the Department of Architecture of the Federico II University that illustrate research projects developed within European geographical and cultural context. The essay develops critical reasoning starting from a series of design experimentations that represent an abacus of case studies, a thematic platform expression of urban and anthropological fragility, on which design experimentations have been structured summarized in five degree theses. The degree theses were developed in parallel with two PRIN researches, one focused on landscape themes, entitled "The landscape project for rejected places, redevelopment of degraded areas in landscape contexts of considerable environmental value".
The other, on the topic of the city in extension, is entitled "From the urbanized countryside to the" city in extension: the design rules of the architecture of the territory of the smaller towns ". In the city dense with the emptiness of the residual spaces, the emptiness of the disused areas could be read as the zero degrees of the monument, an expression of a different way of understanding a pluralist and multicultural collectivity, made up of a series of exasperated individualities
The essay is part of a volume entitled: “Maneuvers. Architectural experiences. The volume is the result of a series of lectures, held within the courses of Architectural Design of the Federico II University, where Italian architects, who come from different territories, were involved to exhibit their work to students.
The essay describes three spaces born from very particular project opportunities. In fact, the projects were developed for different clients but in spaces belonging to the same complex and therefore completely identical. The three spaces, parallelepipeds with a long rectangular plan, have three blindsides so that light can only enter inside from one of the short sides and from the roof. These particular starting conditions offered the possibility of developing comparative reasoning on possible architectural topics useful for resolving the design theme
Testing programme of pre-characterization for c&d waste: an innovative approach developed on the disused factory “Manifattura Tabacchi”, a case study in South of Italy
The article presents the first result of the research agreement signed by Federico II University and CDP Immobiliare concerning reusing and recycling construction waste in the urban regeneration project. The research introduces a new approach focused on the criteria for picking the material samples in order to undergo chemical-physical analysis aimed at verifying the possible contaminants that affects the construction materials, and the effective possibilities of recycling and reusing them in situ. The methodological process aims at defining a protocol for brownfield sites that holds together the potential value of newly freed soils (empty spaces that can be returned to the city) and the request for new specific uses to allocate the future life cycles of the brownfields. The paper will describe the results of the research work focused on an investigation about the scientific background concerning the urban regeneration topic based on the convergence of three thematic areas, interpreted as paradigms of the contemporary urban project: the care of the drosscape, the circular economy and the concept of urban mining. These paradigms could be guidelines useful to develop a transition aimed to re-define urban recovery strategies in the short and long term.L’articolo presenta i primi esiti dell’accordo di ricerca firmato dall’Università Federico II e da CDP Immobiliare sul riutilizzo e il riciclo dei rifiuti edili nel progetto di riqualificazione urbana.
“Interreligious prayer rooms.” Un’esperienza didattica interdisciplinare
If the sacred is an anthropologically (and spatially) unavoidable theme, where and how do curricula in architectural education deal with it? Starting from these issues, the paper aims at investigating some questions that arose from the teaching experience developed for the interdisciplinary course entitled “Interreligious prayer rooms,” held at the Katholisch-Theologische Fakultät Seminar für Liturgiewissenschaft at the University of Bonn. The course was promoted by Albert Gerhards, Emeritus Professor of Liturgical Sciences, and developed with Mariateresa Giammetti. The main objective of the seminar was to transmit knowledge, skills and abilities for a more conscious reading of the architectural prayer space aimed at developing a liturgical support to design inter-religious spaces. The course was developed starting from a theory of sacred space based on two criteria. The first one encompasses self-awareness and action, as categories belonging to the contemporary aesthetic dimension of the liturgical space, and useful tools so that every truly participated celebration becomes an existential challenge inscribed in a circuit of community character. The second one makes use of silence, light and empty spaces as tools for designing the interreligious space, a place open to multiple semantic interpretations whose identity can be based not on style, but on the categories of character and atmosphere.

Sacred Spaces and Virtual Design. Toward a Digital Prayer Interreligious Architecture
The University of Naples Federico II Department of Architecture is developing research on new types of interreligious space for the three Abrahamic confessions. The research, called The Shape of Water (SOW), began in the early 2000s and it has been published in several
articles and volumes. To increase the results of the research, the Department of Architecture has promoted another study (called ALEPH) in collaboration with the Federico II University Engineering Department. ALEPH’s aim is to design and program software to create a virtual museum related to the three Abrahamic confessions that could be adopted by European museums to encourage intercultural exchange between the communities. The software can
create a database to collect the point of view of experts and ordinary people about the perception of new types of hybrid interreligious spaces. ALEPH uses digital technologies
to build a virtual museum tour into two areas: the first one is a virtual tour through interior spaces of religious buildings particularly significant for each of the three confessions; the second one allows us to go into a virtual hybrid prayer space that was developed by SOW.
The strategies produced using the ALEPH digital platform will support ongoing studies of SOW, implementing its databases. So, the visitors of the virtual tour must answer a questionnaire (made in augmented reality) about the perception of the places of the virtual tour and on the space for intercultural prayer. The output of the platform provides a series of useful indicators to map the types and compositing models of the hybrid prayer spaces for the three monotheistic confessions developed by SOW
Light control in Mediterranean architecture. Interdisciplinary design experiences between didactics and investigation
The attempt of this work is to provide a
cultural framework able to re-define a methodological
accuracy that is part of the teaching of design and
architectural composition, in order to develop performances
even before formal works for architecture and
construction. A particular attention is given to control
lighting and shading in the design process in those
places characterized by Mediterranean features. Our
goal is to highlight the importance of manipulate the
light in the architectural design also through a didactical
project, aiming to the functional yield and the performance
of building structures, as one of the cultural
needs that point the technicians and designers much to
the qualification of works of architecture as to the ex
novo design
