    Review on Role of Soil and Water Conservation Measures on Soil Physico Chemical Properties and Its Implication to Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

    Soil degradation is a global threat. Developing countries are more severely affected by soil degradation than developed countries. Ethiopia, one of the developing countries in eastern Africa, is highly threatened by soil degradation problems. The soil degradation problem has had serious consequences in Ethiopia such as occurrence of persistent food insecurity, economic losses and various environmental hazards such as recurrent drought and increases vulnerability of people to the adverse effects of climate variability and change. To overcome these problems, integrated soil and water conservation has been implemented in the country. Thus many studies have been conducted with regards to soil and water conservation which influences soil physical and chemical properties and on climate change adaption and mitigation. Therefore, this review papers was aimed to assess role of soil and water conservation on soil physical and chemical properties and it’s implication to climate change adaptation and mitigation. Different studies showed that soil physical and chemical properties such as Soil texture (sand, silt, clay), Moisture volume (%), FC (%), PWP (%), AWC (%), OC, TN, pH, EC, CEC Ava_P, and Ava_ K, (EB: K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) were improved in different agro ecologies. In addition to this, soil treated with soil and water conservation stored more organic carbon as compared to non treated soil. Soil and water conservation also contributed to improve yield and yield component of crops in areas where serious soil erosion and also in moisture deficit areas. Thus, the studies have been showed that the people’s ability to adopted in climate change. Therefore soil and water conservation could improve soil physical and chemical properties, climate change mitigation and adaptation in the country.     Verification of Soil Test Crop Response Based Phosphorus Fertilizer Recommendation for Tef in Debre Libanos District, North Shewa Zone, Oromia

    The field experiment was conducted to verify the determined optimum amount of nitrogen (92 kg N ha -1), critical P concentration (15 ppm) and P requirement factor (6.1) for tef production in Debre Libanos Districts. The experimental field was arranged with 3 treatments. The trial was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with seven replications over different Farmers field . Control (without fertilizer), Blanket recommendation (100kg Urea and100kg DAP) and soil test based fertilizer recommendation with recommended Nitrogen 92 kg ha -1 were used as a treatment. The gross plot area was 10 * 10m and the space between plots was 0.7m. The required amount of seeds was weighed per plot by considering the recommended rate of tef seed per hectare. The result from this study indicate that an optimum rate of nitrogen (92 Kg N/ha) and soil test based phosphorus fertilizer recommendation was highly significantly influence plant height, panicle length, biomass and grain yield of tef. The highest plant height (82 cm) panicle (27.78 cm), biomass yield (4673kg ha -1) and grain yield (1588 kg ha -1) was recorded from the application of soil test based fertilizer recommendation in conjunction with recommended optimum Nitrogen. The results of the economic analysis showed that the maximum net return was obtained due to soil test based phosphorus fertilizer recommendation .As a result determined Pc and Pf through , site specific soil test crop response based fertilizer study could be profitable for tef production in the study area and other areas having similar soil type and agro-ecology

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    SOIL FERTILITY AND MICRONUTRIENT STATUS IN TISSUES OF MAIZE IN DARO LABU DISTRICT, WEST HARARGHE ZONE, EASTERN ETHIOPIA

    Depletion of soil fertility due to soil erosion and nutrient mining farming system leads to decline soil productivity and crop yields. The study was initiated to assess soil fertility status and to determine micronutrient concentration in the tissues of maize grown at Daro Labu district, Eastern Ethiopia. A field survey was conducted to collect general information. A total of 12 composite soil samples from the depth of 0-20 cm and 12 maize tissue samples were collected from the district. Data were analyzed by using SPSS version 20. The soil texture was sandy clay loam. Soil bulk density was varied from 1.3 to 1.4 g cm-3. The total porosity of soil was very high with a value ranged from 41.5 to 45.3%. The soil pH (6.3 - 6.8) were varied from slightly acidic to a neutral level. The soil was very low in OC content with values ranged from (0.5 to 0.9%). The TN content of the soil was low which was varied from 0.04 to 0.22%. The soils available P content ranging from 10.08 to 16.2 mgkg-1. The CEC of soil was ranged from medium to high. The concentrations of exchangeable Ca and Mg were found to be sufficient in soil of the study area. Exchangeable K was high to very high. The soil had an adequate level of DTPA extractable Fe and Mn whereas deficiency of Cu and B in the soil. The soil showed a deficiency of Zn in 25% of the soil sample. Maize tissue had sufficient concentration of Fe and Mn. However, 41.67%, 41.67% and 75% of maize tissues were deficient in Cu, Zn, and B respectively. The extractable Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, and B concentrations in a plant tissue were positively correlated with their respective soil micronutrients. The study result indicates that OM, total N, Cu, Zn and B are the limiting factors for crop production. The use of integrated soil fertility management practices with increasing organic matter addition should be implemented. Thus, fertilizers containing N, Cu, Zn, and B need to be applied by conducting further experiments under green house and field conditions by considering soil type and crop variety could be recommended

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
