No full textThe karyotype and reproductive features of Orbuspedum machinator Gavrilov-Zimin, 2017 (Pseudococcidae) were studied for the first time. Diploid chromosome number is 18 in females. Reproduction is probably bisexual, as indicated by the presence of characteristic Lecanoid heterochromatinization of the paternal set of chromosomes in embryonic cells of about 50% of the embryos studied. The female reproductive system has a pair of lateral oviducts merged into enlarged common oviduct; the spermatheca and accessory glands are connected to the common oviduct in its proximal part. Complete ovoviviparity occurs in ontogenesis
Product form solution for g-networks with dependent service
No full textWe consider a G-network with Poisson flow of positive customers. Each positive customer entering the network is characterized by a set of stochastic parameters: customer route, the length of customer route, customer volume and his service length at each route stage as well. The following node types are considered:
(0) an exponential node with c. servers, infinite buffer and FIFO discipline;
(1) an infinite-server node;
(2) a single-server node with infinite buffer and LIFO PR discipline;
(3) a single-server node with infinite buffer and PS discipline. Negative customers arriving at each node also form a Poisson flow. A negative customer entering a node with k customers in service, with probability Ilk chooses one of served positive customer as a "target". Then, if the node is of a type 0 the negative customer immediately "kills" (displaces from the network) the target customer, and if the node is of types 1-3 the negative customer with given probability depending on parameters of the target customer route kills this customer and with complementary probability he quits the network with no service. A product form for the stationary probabilities of underlying Markov process is obtained
A revisitation of the paradox of discontinuous trajectory for a mass particle moving on a taut string
No full textA nonlinear extended regularized model of taut string carrying a moving point mass is proposed with the intent to contribute to the solution of the paradox of particle’s discontinuous trajectory. Introducing a coupling between transversal and longitudinal string displacements, an additional equation expressing the so-called wave pressure force arises whose closed-form expression can be obtained imposing that the load-structure combined system is dissipation free. In this context, paradoxical situations in the classic model lead to the emergence of wave resistance forces in the new proposed model that can significantly influence the motion of the inertia particle. Comparisons between classic and improved solutions are presented highlighting the possibility that mass particle can reach the remote support, or can return to the initial support, or do not come to any of the string support according to the values of four dimensionless parameters governing the extended problem

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
No full textWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

The Right to Strike under the United States Constitution: Theory, Practice, and Possible Implications for Canada
No full textAnswering critics of the Canadian Supreme Court's judgment in B.C. Health, the author argues that the Court laid the foundation for a principled and durable doctrine protecting constitutional labour rights, one that goes directly to the heart of the matter — the inequality of workers’ power in the employment relation. In the author’s view, two paths could lead from B.C. Health to the recognition of Charter protec- tion for a right to strike: one that treats the right as an accessory to col- lective bargaining, and one that upholds the right directly on the basis of the Charter values of equality and participation. The author supports the latter approach, contending that constitutional rights should be defined in relation to fundamental values, in a way that is not contingent on time-bound or fact-sensitive assessments about the role of strikes within a particular collective bargaining regime. Although a Charter right to strike may involve the courts in difficult choices about when to defer to legislative policy decisions, and courts may lack the institutional capac- ity to deal effectively with labour law issues, the author points out that judges can look to ILO standards for expert guidance. Noting that the U.S. experience in this area might be of considerable use to Canadians, the author concludes by providing an overview of American case law concerning a constitutional right to strike.Peer reviewe
Vulvar varicosities: diagnosis, treatment, and prevention
No full textSergey G Gavrilov Faculty of Medicine, Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, Moscow, Russia Objective: Vulvar varicosity is a relatively common venous disorder in women with varicose veins of the pelvis and lower extremities and in pregnant women, but there is little information in the medical literature concerning its diagnosis and management. The aim of this study was to describe our experience with 101 women with vulvar varicosities who were examined and treated at our center during 2000–2014.Patients and methods: Patients were divided into two groups: group 1 with 61 women with varicose veins of the pelvis and enlarged vulvar veins, and group 2 with 40 pregnant women (11–38 weeks of pregnancy) with vulvar varicosities.Results: In most cases, vulvar varicosities were able to be diagnosed at clinical examination. In both groups, duplex ultrasound of the veins of the pelvis and lower extremities was used to confirm the presence of varicose veins, identify any retrograde flow, accurately determine vein diameter, and to reveal any anatomical feature of the intrapelvic veins. Treatment approaches varied significantly between the two groups from purely conservative measures during pregnancy to surgical procedures on the ovarian and vulvar veins in group 1. The venoactive agent, micronized purified flavonoid fraction, was effective at reducing the symptoms of vulvar varicosities in both groups.Conclusion: A tailored approach to the diagnosis and treatment of vulvar varicosities can significantly improve the quality of care of women with this disorder.
