Incorporating Rainfall Forecast Data in X-SLIP Platform to Predict the Triggering of Rainfall-Induced Shallow Landslides in Real Time
Extreme and prolonged rainfall resulting from global warming determines a growing need for reliable Landslide Early Warning Systems (LEWS) to manage the risk of rainfall-induced shallow landslides (also called soil slips). Regional LEWS are typically based on data-driven methods because of their greater computational effectiveness, which is greater than the ones of physically based models (PBMs); however, the latter reproduces the physical mechanism of the modelled phenomena, and their modelling is more accurate. The purpose of this research is to investigate the prediction quality of the simplified PBM SLIP (implemented in the X-SLIP platform) when applied on a regional scale by analysing the stability of rain forecasts. X-SLIP was updated to handle the GRIB files (format for weather forecast). Four real-time predictions were simulated on some towns of the Emilia Apennines (northern Italy) involved in widespread soil slips on 5 April 2013; specifically, maps of factors of safety related to this event were derived assuming that X-SLIP had run 72 h, 48 h, 24 h and 12 h in advance. The results indicated that the predictions with forecasts (depending on the forecast quality) are as accurate as the ones derived with rainfall recordings only (benchmark). Moreover, the proposed method provides a reduced number of false alarms when no landslide was reported to occur in the whole area. X-SLIP with rain forecasts can, therefore, represent an important tool to predict the occurrence of future soil slips at a regional scale
The role of educative thought in the life and work of Antonio Gramsci
Many philosophers have propounded a vision of an improved society, what distinguishes Antonio Gramsci is his continuous effort to make it happen by understanding the process in order to put into practice. Gramsci's conviction about the importance of educative development came from both theory and experience. While there has been considerable examination of Gramsci's work in relation to the Prison Notebooks, this study will seek to address a lacuna in Gramsci scholarship. Using Gramsci's philological method, I analyse Gramsci's pre-prison activity; his pre-prison articles and letters, which, together with his letters from prison, formed part of his educative mission. This educative process was necessary, in order to construct a new party which would develop a collective will, collaboratively, with the masses. In this study therefore, I explore the contexts and formative experiences of the first part of his life together with the intellectual sources from which Gramsci developed his later theories, making central hitherto underemphasised connections between them which informed his writing and ideas. I intend to illustrate that Gramsci's underlying purpose in his writing, and political activity, was not only practical, on how to create a new socialist ruling class, but also educative in forming the mindset and values of his comrades. So that in addition to outlining his vision of a new order, he implicitly guided or explicitly explained the processes by which the necessary changes in social relations and moral climate could be made in order to achieve it. Each person had to engage with the values of the new order so that each could contribute to the construction of a new robust state. It was essential to build a hegemony at the most profound level, one which was dependent on collective understandings and a collective will
Postfazione
Experimental Analyses on Cellular Polymers for Geotechnical Applications
Cellular polymers represent an important category within the area of the polymeric materials. Although these materials are experiencing a growing importance from both an industrial and an economic point of view, there is not such a big and detailed corresponding scientific literature. Except for the researches directly supported by the manufacturing companies, mainly interested, there are only few scientific and engineering studies about this argument. This article is aimed to the geotechnical characterisation of the rigid polyurethane foam and the extruded polystyrene foam and their physical- mechanical properties. The mechanical behaviour is investigated through oedometric and triaxial tests, performed in either PUR and XPS samples at different densities. As a result, the influence of the density on the relationship stress-strain for the materials is obtained. Practical methods and procedures about how to adapt the geotechnical tests on such materials, different from the soil, are also illustrated. At the end of the analyses, a first attempt of interpretation is given, so that an analytical model for the geotechnical description of cellular polymers can be developed
Infestazioni parassitarie polmnari del gatto: Aelurostrongylus abstrusus
Numerosi parassiti possono infestare il tratto
respiratorio del gatto. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus
stile di vita (all’interno, all’esterno), origine geografica
e metodi utilizzati per la diagnosi. Il parassita è
ancora considerato da alcuni veterinari pratici
sporadico e relativamente poco patogeno. I gatti
si infestano attraverso l’assunzione di chiocciole
o più facilmente di ospiti paratenici. Solitamente
respiratori poco patognomonici.
concomitanti.

Locally delivered ozonated oil in necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis treatment. A case report.
Necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is a destructive inflammatory disorder of the gingiva characterized by gingival interproximal necrosis resulting in a “punched-out” papillae, with gingival bleeding and pain. Fetid malodour, yellow/gray pseudomembrane, local lymphadenopathy, fever and malaise may be secondary diagnostic features. Prevotella intermedia, fusiform bacteria and spirochetes have been associated with NUG. Conventional NUG therapy is based on removal of bacteria and nonattached deposits with ultrasonic scaling and OHI. An antibiotic regimen of amoxicillin 500 mg PO TID for 10 days plus metronidazole 250 mg PO TID for 10 days is suggested in case of swelling of the local lymph nodes or fever/malaise. Recently, ozonated oils (O3-Oil) have been introduced in the market for their antimicrobial activity as antiseptics and their potential bio-stimulation to wound healing process. The present study describes a case of NUG successfully treated with topical application of O3-Oil.
In November 2011, a 31-year old man was referred to the Department of Periodontology and Implantology - University of Bologna with the chief complaint of gingival pain, halitosis and local lymphadenopathy. Clinical oral examination revealed: interdental gingival necrosis with punched-out papillae, submandibular lymph nodes with positive palpation and foetor ex ore. Diffuse gingival bleeding in absence of pathological probing depth was recorded. The subject was an 18 cigarettes/day smoker in general good health. A diagnosis of NUG was made. The patient was discharged with the only instruction of local application of an O3-Oil (Novox®) TID for 10 days. No OHI were given to the subject. Twenty-three days after the first visit (re-evaluation) a complete remission was observed. Proper OHI were given for maintenance of periodontal health. A periodontal microbiological examination by mean of real-time PCR was performed at first and at re-evaluation visits. Compared to baseline, a 37% reduction in the overall bacterial load was observed (from 8,03x105 to 5,03x105). Three periodontal pathogens were detected at both first and final examinations, but with a general amount reduction. The data recorded were respectively: Fusobacterium nucleatum ssp from 2740 to 1295 (53% decrease), Treponema denticola from 2220 to 1996 (10% decrease) and Eikenella corrodens from 568 to 374 (34%). Within the limitations of this study, the results suggest that O3-Oil (Novox®) could be a clinical effective antiseptic reducing the general bacterial load and specifically the NUG associated species. The complete clinical remission suggests a potentially direct influence on healing process. The promising results obtained for the O3-Oil suggest its applicability for NUG, pursuing the advantages of limiting antibiotic treatment. Further preclinical and clinical investigations are warranted
