Working time: New issues and old beliefs

    No full text
The aim of this book is to give, within due limits, an idea of matters related to the "hot" topic of working time. After dealing with the basic trends observed, an outline is provided of the relevance of hours worked to the economic sector concerned, without neglecting the role played by flexibility. Subsequently, after sketching a picture of the main labour market indicators for most of the OECD countries, we focus on the re-emergence of the working time debate by underlining the main arguments, for and against, regarding a work-sharing policy. At the end of the relation between employment and work-week duration is analyzed in different models

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Energie rinnovabili ed emissioni di CO2 nei paesi del Mediterraneo

    No full text

Human capital and working hours: searching for any interactions at Stake

    No full text
The aim of the present paper is to investigate the linkage between education and working hours, assumed to be positive as suggested by econometric evidence (Coleman and Pencavel (1993), Costa (1998) and Card (1999)), by using a model à la Acemoglu (1994, 1996) with a labour market characterised by a costly search activity and a matching technology function, and where labour input is a composite of two different dimensions: human capital and working time.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Polycondensed heterocycles. IV. Synthesis of 1,4-Dioxo-2,3,3a,4-tetrahydro-1H-pyrrolo[2,1-c][1,4]benzothiazine

A method for the synthesis of the title compound 3 consisted of an intramolecular cyclization in a stannic chloride catalyzed Friedel‐Crafts reaction of N‐(2‐methylthiophenyl)‐5‐oxoproline chloride 10, prepared by chlorination of the corresponding acid 9 obtained by hydrolysis of its ethyl ester 8. Condensation of 2‐methylthioaniline 4 with diethyl bromomalonate 5 afforded diethyl 2‐methylthioanilinomalonate 6 which gave 8 either directly by reaction with ethyl acrylate or by alkylation with ethyl β‐bromopropionate or ethyl acrylate and cyclization of resulting triethyl 2‐(2‐methylthio)anilino‐2‐carboxyglutarate 7. This method was not convenient because of the poor yield of 3 (14%). On the other hand, cyclization of N‐(2‐mercaptophenyl)‐5‐oxoproline 14 with DCC and DMAP provided 3 in 45% yield. Oxidation with m‐CPBA of the esters 11 and 8, demethylation via the Pummerer rearrangement of the respective sulphoxides 12 and 17 with TFAA and oxidation with iodine of resulting N‐(2‐mercap‐tophenyl)‐5‐oxoproline esters 13 and 18 gave the corresponding disulphides 16 and 19. Hydrolysis of these latter compounds and reduction of the resulting bis[2‐[2‐(hydroxycarbonyl)‐5‐oxo‐1‐pyrrolidinyl]phenyl] disulphide 15 with sodium dithionite afforded the required 14. Deprotection of t‐butyl ester 13 with TFA at 55° to obtain 14 led to 3 in 42% yield. Finally the Pummerer rearrangement of N‐(2‐methylsulphinylphenyl)‐5‐oxo‐proline 20 yielded the mixture of 14 and 15. Copyright © 1990 Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry

EXPLORING THE INTERDEPENDENCES BETWEEN HIGH SPEED RAIL SYSTEMS AND TOURISM: SOME EVIDENCE FROM ITALY

    No full text
This paper highlights the expected impacts of the High Speed/High Capacity Rail project in Italy on tourism. An empirical analysis has been carried out with the aid of a database containing information both on tourism and transport for 77 Italian municipalities, during the 2006–2013 period. The specification of a panel model simultaneously considering the effects on all the municipalities has been proposed. The main results of the analysis show that the impacts of HSR on the number of Italian visitors and the number of nights spent at destination are positive in all the municipalities served by HSR. Moreover an airport traffic model specification has been proposed as well in order to show the impact of plane on Italian tourists 'mode choices
