The pictorial wit of Domenico Tiepolo
This thesis takes a new approach to Domenico Tiepolo’s (1727-1804), Divertimento Per li Regazzi (c.1795-1804), it is arguably the artists most enigmatic graphic work, which features the commedia dell’arte character Pulcinella. The drawings have hitherto been subject to rigorous connoisseurial analysis. Indeed, in his introduction to ten of the drawings in a catalogue of Italian Eighteenth-Century Drawings in The Robert Lehman Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, James Byam Shaw states that this particular series of drawings has now become so famous ‘that it is hardly necessary to add to the literature of the series.’1 In my opinion it would be a great pity if future generations of scholars were discouraged by this remark, for I believe the drawings still have much to ‘tell’ the contemporary art historian and would further benefit from increasingly interpretative readings. Previously, scholars have regarded Domenico Tiepolo as an imitator of his father, Giambattista Tiepolo (1696-1770), and interpreted the re-appropriation of motifs in the Divertimento as signs of old age and fatigue. I suggest, on the contrary, that in this series of drawings in particular, Domenico was an innovator.
This project carves out new territories within the study of the series in that it focuses on the playful nature of the drawings, and how the suite can be understood in relation to contemporary theory concerning games and play, and ludic musical/improvisatory forms. Additionally, the drawings are discussed as a case history in a now popular emerging dialectic on the late works of aged artists: here I consider how these drawings, often funny, poignant, sensitive and delicate reveal how the elderly painter reconciles himself not only to the passing of his own life and the extinction of his family line but to an entire political, cultural and visual tradition

Identification of structural alerts for liver and kidney toxicity using repeated dose toxicity data
Background: The potential for a compound to cause hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity is a matter of extreme interest for human health risk assessment. To assess liver and kidney toxicity, repeated-dose toxicity (RDT) studies are conducted mainly on rodents. However, these tests are expensive, time-consuming and require large numbers of animals. For early toxicity screening, in silico models can be applied, reducing the costs, time and animals used. Among in silico approaches, structure-activity relationship (SAR) methods, based on the identification of chemical substructures (structural alerts, SAs) related to a particular activity (toxicity), are widely employed. Results: We identified and evaluated some SAs related to liver and kidney toxicity, using RDT data on rats taken from the hazard evaluation support system (HESS) database. We considered only SAs that gave the best percentages of true positives (TP). Conclusions: It was not possible to assign an unambiguous mode of action for all the SAs, but a mechanistic explanation is provided for some of them. Such achievements may help in the early identification of liver and renal toxicity of substances
Domenico Venier's Poetics and Petrarchism in Sixteenth-Century Veneto
reservedIl presente elaborato si propone di indagare il fenomeno del petrarchismo cinquecentesco in area veneta, concentrandosi in particolare sulla figura di Domenico Venier, tra i più rappresentativi interpreti della lirica petrarchesca nel contesto veneziano del XVI secolo. Attraverso un’analisi delle principali istanze tematiche e stilistiche rintracciabili nella sua produzione poetica, la tesi intende delineare un profilo letterario dell’autore che tenga conto non solo della tradizione petrarchesca, ma anche delle caratteristiche culturali e sociali del contesto lagunare. Particolare attenzione è riservata al cenacolo venieriano, luogo privilegiato di scambio intellettuale e di sperimentazione poetica, che svolse un ruolo significativo nella diffusione e nella rielaborazione del canone lirico stabilito da Pietro Bembo nella prima metà del Cinquecento. La tesi prende inoltre in esame la ricezione critica della poesia di Venier, con l’obiettivo di ricostruire le diverse prospettive interpretative che hanno contribuito a delineare l’immagine letteraria del poeta nel corso dei secoli.This thesis aims to investigate the phenomenon of sixteenth-century Petrarchism in the Veneto region of Northern Italy, with a particular focus on the figure of Domenico Venier, one of the most prominent exponents of Petrarchan lyric poetry of the time. Through an analysis of the main thematic and stylistic features that characterize his poetic production, the study seeks to outline a literary profile of the author, considering not only the Petrarchan tradition but also the cultural and social characteristics of the Venetian context. Special attention is given to Venier’s social circle, a privileged space for intellectual exchange and poetic experimentation, which played a significant role in the dissemination and reworking of the lyric canon established by Pietro Bembo in the first half of the sixteenth century. The thesis also examines the critical reception of Venier’s poetry, aiming to reconstruct the various interpretative perspectives that have contributed to shaping the poet’s literary image throughout the centuries
Domenico Gerosolimitano a Venezia
In this article, the author provides the Hebrew name of Domenico Gerosolimitano, a famous ecclesiastical censor of Hebrew books who lived in Italy from the end of the sixteenth through the second decade of the seventeenth centuries. Based on the discovery of his baptismal act, recorded in Venice, Domenico Gerosolimitano's Hebrew name was Rabbi Samuel Vivas, of Jerusalem. The aforementioned act determines the exact date of his conversion to Catholicism, as 6 August, 1593. The author presents new information concerning Domenico´s life in Venice as well as his activities as censor of Hebrew books.El artículo se ocupa de la identificación hebrea de Domenico Gerosolimitano, célebre censor de libros hebreos que trabajó en Italia entre fines del siglo XVI y los primeros veinte años del XVII. Gracias a haber descubierto en Venecia el acta de bautismo, el autor ha logrado identificar a Domenico Gerosolimitano con el rabino Samuel Vivas de Jerusalén y precisar la fecha exacta de su conversión al catolicismo (6 de agosto de 1593). El estudio arroja además nueva luz sobre la estancia en Venecia de Domenico y sobre sus inicios como censor de libros hebreos
Novel chemotypes targeting tubulin at the Colchicine binding site and unbiasing P-glycoprotein
Retrospective validation studies carried out on three benchmark databases containing a small fraction (that is 2.80%) of known tubulin binders permitted us to develop a computational platform very effective in selecting easier manageable subsets showing by far higher percentages of actives (about 25%). These studies relied on the hierarchical application of multilayer in silico screenings employing filters implying molecular shape similarity; a structure-based pharmacophore model and molecular docking campaigns. Building on this validated approach, we performed intensive prospective studies to screen a large chemical collection, including up to 3.7 millions of commercial compounds, to across an unexplored and patent space in the search of novel colchicine binding site inhibitors. Our investigation was successful in identifying a pool of 31 initial hits showing new molecular scaffolds (such as 4,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrolo [3,4-c]pyrazol-6-one and pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine). This panel of new hits resulted antiproliferative activity in the low mM range towards MCF-7 human breast cancer, HepG2 human liver cancer, HeLa human ovarian cancer and SHSY5Y human glioblastoma cell lines as well as interesting concentration- dependent inhibition of tubulin polymerization assessed through fluorescence polymerization assays. Unlike typical tubulin inhibitors, a satisfactorily low sensitivity towards P-gp was also measured in bi- directional transport studies across MDCKII-MDR1 cells for a selected subset of seven compounds

Applicability Domain for QSAR models: where theory meets reality
Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships are widely acknowledged predictive methods employed, for years, in organic and medicinal chemistry. More recently, they have assumed a central role also in the context of the explorative toxicology for the protection of environment and human health. However, their real-life application has not been always enthusiastically welcomed, being often retrospectively used and, thus, of limited importance for prospective goals. The need of making more trustable predictions has thus addressed studies on the so-called Applicability Domain, which represents the chemical space from which a model is derived and where a prediction is considered to be reliable. In the present study, the authors survey a number of approaches used to build the Applicability Domain. In particular, they will focus on strategies based on: a) physico chemical, b) structural and c) response domains. Moreover, some examples integrating different strategies will be also discussed to meet the needs of both model developers and downstream users
A k-NN algorithm for predicting oral sub-chronic toxicity in the rat
Repeated dose toxicity is of the utmost importance to characterize the toxicological profile of a chemical after repeated administration. Its evaluation refers to the Lowest-Observed-(Adverse)-Effect-Level (LO(A)EL) explicitly requested in several regulatory contexts, such as REACH and EC Regulation 1223/2009 on cosmetic products. So far in vivo tests have been the sole viable option to assess repeated dose toxicity. We report a customized k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) approach for predicting sub-chronic oral toxicity in rats. A training set of 254 chemicals was used to derive models whose robustness was challenged through leave-one-out cross-validation. Their predictive power was evaluated on an external dataset comprising 179 chemicals. Despite the intrinsically heterogeneous nature of the data, our models give promising results, with q2 ≥ 0.632 and external r2 ≥ 0.543. The confidence in prediction was ensured by implementing restrictive user-adjustable rules, excluding suspicious chemicals irrespective of the goodness in their prediction. Comparison with the very few LO(A)EL predictive models in the literature indicates that the results of the present analysis can be valuable in prioritizing the safety assessment of chemicals and thus making safe decisions and justifying waiving animal tests according to current regulations concerning chemical safety
The Hirsch spectrum: a novel tool for analysing scientific journals
This paper introduces the Hirsch spectrum (h-spectrum) for analyzing the academic reputation of a scientific journal. h-Spectrum is a novel tool based on the Hirsch (h) index. It is easy to construct: considering a specific journal in a specific interval of time, h-spectrum is defined as the distribution representing the h-indexes associated to the authors of the journal articles. This tool allows defining a reference profile of the typical author of a journal, compare different journals within the same scientific field, and provide a rough indication of prestige/reputation of a journal in the scientific community. h-Spectrum can be associated to every journal. Ten specific journals in the Quality Engineering/Quality Management field are analyzed so as to preliminarily investigate the h-spectrum characteristic
