Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Già agli inizi degli anni ’70 Gael de Guichen e Gary Thomson iniziarono a parlare di conservazione preventiva, definita come insieme delle azioni finalizzate a migliorare lo stato di un bene culturale, sia esso una collezione piuttosto che un monumento o un sito archeologico.
La conservazione preventiva mira a ridurre la necessità di interventi di restauro, utilizzando una strategia basata su monitoraggi ambientali e analisi del sistema bene-ambiente che, una volta determinate le principali cause di rischio e soprattutto la loro origine, le controllano per rallentare quanto più possibile la velocità dei processi di degrado e per definire eventuali trattamenti manutentivi

No full textIntroducing Corpus Linguistics in an ESP course for students of International Relations might seem pointless at a first glance. In such contexts, ‘the top priority is to enable students to read in English for their other courses and in view of their future professional needs' (Brodine 2001:138). Therefore, they are likely to find corpus work a useless complication in their study of the English language.Our experiment, in contrast, is aimed at enhancing the students' awareness both of the specific lexicogrammatical and syntactic features that characterise the discourse of foreign relations and of the links existing – in texts belonging to that genre – between discourse strategies and global as well as local socio-political issues. The present paper thus illustrates work carried out during a 15-hour seminar on Corpus Linguistics in the framework of an ESP course taken by students of the Laurea Magistrale in International Relations at the University of Naples “Federico II”. The course was divided into three main parts: a theoretical introduction to using Corpus Linguistics in the study of political discourse; a practical introduction to using WordSmith Tools with the assistance of the teacher, in order to analyse texts already encountered by the students during the ESP course; a final research produced by the students as the outcome of corpus analysis carried out by them working in autonomous groups on a small specialized corpus assembled by themselves collecting official documents about terrorism produced both by the United Nations and the White House.The experiment yielded interesting results, as the students enjoyed taking on the role of linguistic researcher (Gavioli 2001) and, in a very short time, acquired skills that will help them in their future understanding of the mechanisms underlying the discourse of international relations

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
