Cross-correlation between gravitational wave detectors for detecting association with gamma ray bursts
Cross-correlation of the outputs of two gravitational wave (GW) detectors has recently been proposed-as a method for detecting statistical association between GWs and gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Unfortunately, the method can be effectively used only in the case of stationary noise. In this work a different cross-correlation algorithm is presented, which may effectively be applied also in nonstationary conditions for the cumulative analysis of a large number of GRBs. The value of the cross-correlation at zero delay, which is the only one expected to be correlated to any astrophysical signal, is compared with the distribution of cross-correlation of the same data for all nonzero delays within the integration time interval. This background distribution is Gaussian, so the statistical significance of an experimentally observed excess is well defined. Computer simulations using real noise data of the cryogenic GW detectors Explorer and Nautilus with superimposed deltalike signals were performed to test the effectiveness of the method, and theoretical estimates of its sensitivity were compared to the results of the simulation. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is compared to that of other cumulative techniques, showing that the algorithm is particularly effective in the case of non-Gaussian noise and of a large (100-1000 s) and unpredictable delay between GWs and GRBs

Endovascular Treatment of Visceral Artery Pseudoaneurysms in Patients with Chronic Pancreatitis: Our Single-Center Experience
Background To analyze our experience in endovascular treatment as first-line approach for severe and acute hemorrhage in patients with chronic pancreatitis. Methods From 2010 to 2016 at our institution, 12 males (mean age 66 years) with bleeding pseudoaneurysms (PSAs) underwent urgent visceral angiography and endovascular treatment. All patients had chronic pancreatitis. True visceral artery aneurysms and PSAs arising after surgery were excluded from the study. Results Pancreatitis was caused by alcohol abuse in 9 (9/12, 75%) patients and biliary lithiasis in 3 (3/12, 25%). Involved arteries were gastroduodenal (5/12, 50%), splenic (2/12, 16%), common hepatic (2/12, 16%), middle colic (1/12, 9%), and celiac trunk (1/12, 9%). All patients underwent computed tomography angiography (CTA) scan and visceral angiography followed by endovascular treatment using different devices. Technical success rate was 100%. Bleeding was stopped in all patients, and no one required reembolization. No major complications occurred. There were 2 complications associated with the endovascular procedure: in one case, a coil migration and in another case, in-stent restenosis at 6 months. Follow-up included CTA performed during hospitalization and at 6 months after the procedure. Conclusions Our experience confirms the role of CTA and visceral angiography as diagnostic and therapeutic tool, respectively
Neutrophil extracellular traps in cancer
Beyond their well-known functions in the acute phases of the immune response, neutrophils play important roles in the various phases of tumor initiation and progression, through the release of their stored or newly synthesized mediators. In addition to reactive oxygen species, cytokines, chemokines, granule proteins and lipid mediators, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) can also be released upon neutrophil activation. NET formation can be achieved through a cell-death process or in association with the release of mitochondrial DNA from viable neutrophils. NETs are described as extracellular fibers of DNA and decorating proteins responsible for trapping and killing extracellular pathogens, playing a protective role in the antimicrobial defense. There is increasing evidence, however, that NETs play multiple roles in the scenario of cancer-related inflammation. For instance, NETs directly or indirectly promote tumor growth and progression, fostering tumor spread at distant sites and shielding cancer cells thus preventing the effects of cytotoxic lymphocytes. NETs can also promote tumor angiogenesis and cancer-associated thrombosis. On the other hand, there is some evidence that NETs may play anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorigenic roles. Trattamento Percutaneo della litiasi biliare: esperienza di un unico centro
Scopo: La gestione dei pazienti con litiasi biliare è volta a risolvere le colangiti e le infezioni biliari croniche. L’approccio percutaneo (PA) è attualmente indicato come alternativa efficace agli approcci endoscopici o chirurgici.
Materiale e metodi: E’ stato collezionato un database prospettico di pazienti sottoposti ad PA per litiasi biliare. Sono stati inclusi 104 pazienti trattati dal 2000 al 2015; 13 pazienti sono stati esclusi per una sottostante stenosi maligna. Dei restanti 91 pazienti, 38 (Gruppo A) avevano solo calcoli biliari e 53 (Gruppo B) avevano calcoli e stenosi biliare (BS). I nostri obiettivi sono stati: la valutazione del tasso di successo della procedura, l’efficacia a breve e lungo termine e la sicurezza del PA nei due gruppi e nella intera popolazione.
Risultati: Sono stati eseguiti 511 trattamenti, con una mediana di 5 trattamenti per paziente. Il tempo intercorso tra il primo trattamento e la rimozione finale del drenaggio è stato significativamente più lungo nel Gruppo B (p=0.039). Durante un follow-up medio di 38 mesi, la mediana di intervallo libero da calcoli biliari è stata di 21 mesi (intervallo di confidenza 95%: 14.1-28.7). La mediana di recidiva è stata più corta nei pazienti con stenosi biliare, sebbene non significativa (p=0.174). L'approccio percutaneo è stato più efficace nel lungo periodo nei pazienti del Gruppo A e non è stato più necessario nel 68.4% di questi pazienti rispetto al 35.8% dei pazienti nel Gruppo B (p=0.003).
Conclusioni: Il trattamento con approccio percutaneo per la pulizia dei calcoli biliari è una procedura efficace con elevati tassi di successo nei pazienti con calcoli biliari; tuttavia, la coesistenza di stenosi biliare condiziona l’efficacia a lungo termine
Magnetic Analysis of MgFe Hydrotalcites as Powder and Dispersed in Thin Films within a Keratin Matrix
Hydrotalcites (HTlcs) are a class of nanostructured layered materials that may be employed in a variety of applications, from green to bio technologies. In this paper, we report an investigation on HTlcs made of Mg and Fe, recently employed to improve the growth in vitro of osteoblasts within a keratin sponge. We carried out an analysis of powder materials and of HTlcs dispersed in keratin and spin-coated on a Si/SiO2 substrate at different temperatures. A magnetic study of the powders was carried out with a Quantum Design Physical Property Measurement System equipped with a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. The data gathered prove that these HTlcs are fully paramagnetic, and keratin showed a very small magnetic response. Optical and Atomic Force Microscopy analyses of the thin films provide a detailed picture of clusters randomly dispersed in the films with various dimensions. The magnetic properties of these films were characterized using the Nano Magneto Optical Kerr Effect (NanoMOKE) down to 7.5 K. The data collected show that the local magnetic properties can be mapped with a micrometric resolution distinguishing HTlc regions from keratin ones. This approach opens new perspectives in the characterization of these composite materials

Allo stato attuale tre aspetti in tema di esposizione a polveri silicotigene meritano di essere approfonditi e discussi e cioè la frequenza con cui si è manifestata la patologia ed il suo andamento negli ultimi anni, a quale livello deve intendersi presente l'obbligo assicurativo ed infine quali risvolti possiamo attenderci dal recente inserimento da parte della IARC del quarzo e della cristobalite tra gli agenti cancerogeni per l'uomo
