Empirical fragility curves for masonry buildings struck by the 2016 Central Italy earthquake
The prevention of seismic risk at urban scale can be pursued through the estimate of the probability to reach or exceed a certain
damage grade given the seismic input. In this framework, seismic fragility curves are nowadays of large interest as they express
this probability in a synthetic way, also extended to large-scale applications. Real damage data are crucial in making more reliable
predictions of damage occurrence, although they can be influenced by a proper definition of the structural types and the
completeness of observations. The paper shows the empirical fragility curves obtained for a sample of 2263 masonry buildings
located within 19 historical centers struck by the 2016 Central Italy earthquake. The damage grade was evaluated according to the
European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98), also considering undamaged buildings, at the end of the sequence that spanned between
August and October. The buildings largely underwent several repairs and strengthening actions with reinforced concrete elements
starting from the 1980s. The systematization of the structural features led to a taxonomy for strengthened and original buildings,
which, based on the observed damage patterns, was matched to the EMS-98 vulnerability classification. The sample ranges from
class A (worst behavior) to D (best behavior). Class A was typically assigned to original buildings (without interventions) or illadvisedly tampered ones, i.e., those in which interventions had an unfavorable contribution to their seismic behavior. Class D
described buildings with properly designed strengthening interventions, classes B and C intermediate situations. Fragility curves
were obtained per each vulnerability class, as a function of the highest peak ground acceleration (PGA) observed in the sequence
from ShakeMaps. The results were then compared to other empirical fragility model
Implementation of ROSA radio occultation data handling into EUMETSAT and GRAS SAF processing
Topic of the GRAS-SAF Visiting Scientist activity 16 has been the implementation of ROSA radio occultation data handling into EUMETSAT and GRAS SAF processing tools. ROSA data referred to observations taken on-board OCEANSAT-2 mission. Even if we are talking of standard Radio Occultation data, the format of raw binary data is peculiar, and processing chains already implemented for other Radio Occultation missions, should be adapted to this further format. Moreover, ROSA antennas, ROSA coverage, ROSA sampling rate, etc. are different from GRAS or COSMIC data. Main goals of this VS activity have therefore been the implementation of ROSA processing into the EUMETSAT YAROS prototype (in order to produce excess-phases, amplitudes and bending angles over impact parameter) and into the GRAS SAF ROPP processor (for the processing into bending angle, refractivity and higher level atmospheric profiles), dealing mainly with data interfacing issues. The first part of the activity was carried out in EUMETSAT, where the YAROS prototype has been adapted to handle ROSA data. Before doing that, an in-depth analysis has been done in order to identify all the ROSA data characteristics and issues. In particular, the Thales Alenia Space "decoding" software has been completely review, in order to understand how these data were formatted inside the native binary ROSA data stream coming from the OCEANSAT-2 telemetry, and inside the standard Level1 Engineered data file available for users. This preliminary analysis allows the definition of several ROSA data structures that could be easily implemented directly inside the YAROS prototype. At the end of this first part, two different releases of the EUMETSAT prototype were available: the first one able to manage only the scientific ROSA engineered data, containing the basic observables for Radio Occultation purposes (the Level 1a data, the one normally made available for users); the second one which implements ad-hoc data structures where all the data generated by the ROSA receiver (and contained in the raw binary format, the Level 0 data) are stored. About thirty hours of ROSA observations, for which orbit and clocks were already available, were used as input to the adapted YAROS/ROSA prototype and completely analyzed. Only the YAROS prototype adapted to ROSA Engineered Level 1 format was used. A quality check of L1 and L2 basic observables (mainly L1 and L2 Excess-Phase and Signal-to-Noise ratio profiles) contained in the Level 1a YAROS output file has been performed. Even if a complete ROSA dataset is available for one entire month of observations, the production of all the necessary POD products for the entire month was not undertaken. Its in-depth analysis will be carried out in the future, when the Memorandum of Understanding between Italian Space Agency and EUMETSAT for the ROSA data processing will be signed. During this activity we preferred to concentrate the work on the YAROS prototype adaptation to ROSA data, making the prototype ready to handle all the ROSA data available, and not only the one contained in the Level1 Engineered data normally available to the user. In order to let these NetCDF Level1a YAROS/ROSA output files to be further processed into higher Radio Occultation products, a converter from NetCDF 4.0 to NetCDF 3.0 file (with the required data structures correctly set for the GRAS-SAF ROPP processing). This was performed during the second part of the Visiting Scientist activity at DMI, where YAROS/ROSA Level 1a files were both processed to bending angles, to refractivity and higher level products. Analysis of the bending angle and refractivity data against ECMWF and collocated radio occultation data were also performed, in order to have a preliminary idea on the quality of the final atmospheric products that can be achieved analyzing ROSA data. Moreover, YAROS/ROSA Level 1a files were also processed into Level 1b products (bending angle profiles) using the L1a2L1b YAROS code and compared with the correspondent forward modelled ECMWF collocated data. As a general comment on the ROSA data quality it has to be noted that, even thought L1 data are in line with that observed by the other Radio Occultation instruments, L2 data shows some problems. Problems which are mainly related to OCEANSAT-2 issues. ROSA on-board OCEANSAT-2 was equipped only with the Velocity Radio Occultation antennas, therefore only rising events can be recorded. Moreover local multipath on-board OCEANSAT-2 is very strong because of solar panels and because of the scatterometer antenna which both are moving. In particular this local multipath was not modelled or measured on ground, since an in-orbit platform manoeuvre was made necessary and created a permanent and unexpected yaw bias on the platform. And these problems mainly impact L2 tracking, which basically starts too high in atmosphere and which is affected by long data gaps. Only for a small number of events L2 is available in troposphere. In these cases, the quality of atmospheric profiles retrieved using the GRAS-SAF ROPP processing chain is in line with that obtainable from other Radio Occultation missions. But, for all the other cases for which L2 is available higher in the atmosphere, modifications to the L2 extrapolation/interpolations and different Statistical Optimization setting are probably necessary to adapt the GRAS-SAF ROPP_PP Processor to such bad data. From the other point of view, YAROS software correctly handle such ROSA data, even if a high number of rejected profiles are seen with respect what normally happens in processing data from other Radio Occultation observation
Optimized Ultrasound-Assisted Enzymatic Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Rosa canina L. Pseudo-Fruits (Rosehip) and Their Biological Activity
Two techniques, namely, optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and enzyme-assisted extraction (EAE), were used to promote the extraction of phenolic compounds from the pseudo-fruits of Rosa canina L. (RC). For UAE, an optimization process based on the design of experiment (DoE) principles was used for determining the dependence between three variables (i.e., time of extraction, ultrasound amplitude, and the material-to-water ratio) and the total phenolic content of the samples. For EAE, a 2:1:1 pectinase, cellulase, and hemicellulase enzymatic blend was used as pre-treatment for optimized UAE, inducing a higher total phenolic content. The untargeted phenolic profiling approach revealed a great abundance of lower molecular weight phenolics (1.64 mg Eq./g) in UAE-RC extracts, whilst gallic acid (belonging to hydroxybenzoic acid derivatives) was the most abundant individual compound of both extracts. The unsupervised multivariate statistics clearly discriminated the impact of enzymatic pre-treatment on the phenolic profile of RC pseudo-fruits. Finally, Pearson’s correlation coefficients showed that anthocyanins, phenolic acids, and tyrosol derivatives were those compounds mostly correlated to the in vitro antioxidant potential of the extracts, whilst negative and significant (p < 0.05) correlation coefficients were recorded when considering the enzymatic inhibition activities. The highest enzyme-inhibitory activity has been identified against α-glucosidase, which indicates an antidiabetic effect
Determination of the Chemical Composition, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Different Parts of Rosa canina L. and Rosa pimpinellifolia L. Essential Oils
Today, the use of essential oils is increasing day by day, and it is considered as raw materials in many industries. Therefore, this study aims to identify the essential oil profile, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of Rosa canina L. and Rosa pimpinellifolia L. reveal their potential use in the industry. Essential oils that were obtained in 2013-2014 from different parts (flower, leaf, stem, and fruit) of Rosa canina L. and Rosa pimpinellifolia L. by the hydro-distillation method were analyzed by GC/MS. The dominant components in Rosa canina L. were found as trans-geraniol in the flowers (42.08 % for 2013), linalool in the leaves (11.55 % for 2014), and stem (14.91 % for 2013) and vitispirane in the fruits (37.19 % for 2014). The dominant components in R. pimpinellifolia L. were found as heneicosane in the flowers (22.07 % for 2014), gamma-elemene in the leaves (30.21 % for 2013), linalool in the stem (14.76 % for 2013) and the fruits, (E)-2-hexenal for those collected in 2013 (14.09 %). The IC50 and FRAP values of the samples ranged from 127.54 to 142.22 mu g/g and 121.43 to 296.78 mu mol TE/g, respectively. According to the results obtained, both R. canina L. and R. pimpinellifolia L. were found to show poor antioxidant values of DPPH and FRAP. In general, it was determined that the essential oils obtained from different plant parts of both species had a moderate antimicrobial effect against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.WOS:0006603262000012-s2.0-8510781136
Accents and dialect as a source of humour: the case of Rio
The present work stems from a research project carried out with G. De Rosa on the dubbing and subtitling of the film Rio (Saldanha, 2011), produced by Blue Sky Studios, in which the original English dialogues are compared and contrasted to translations into several languages, i.e. Brazilian Portuguese and Italian, making occasional reference to other dubbed versions, e.g. the Mexican, Spanish and Portuguese versions. In particular, this paper is devoted to an analy-sis of the Italian dubbing of Rio into Italian, focusing especially on humorous aspects and sociolinguistic variation and drawing a comparison with another animated film, i.e. The Aristocats (Reitherman, 1970)
