Measurement of Thermo-Optic Properties of Thin Film Dielectric Coatings

    No full text
We have carried out an experiment to test the theory of the thermo-optic response of a dielectric stack mirror coating and to measure parameters of interest in calculating thermo-optic noise. Specifically, we measured the coefficient of thermal expansion and the change of index of refraction with temperature (dn/dT ) for thin film silica (SiO2) and tantala (Ta2O5) in mirror coatings. These measurements were achieved by driving thermal fluctuations in such mirrors in one arm of a small Michelson interferometer. We report on the results of that experiment along with its potential implications for future gravitational wave detectors, and suggest next steps for this important line of investigation

Characterization of defect induced multilayer graphene

    No full text
A study of oxygen plasma on multilayer graphene is done with different flow rates. This is to allow a controlled amount of defect fabricated on the graphene. Results from the study showed that the intensity ratio of defect between D peak and G peak was strongly depended on the amount of oxygen flow rate thus affected the 2D band of the spectra. The inter-defect distance LD ≥ 15 nm of each sample indicated that low-defect density was fabricated. The surface roughness of the multilayer graphene also increased and reduced the conductivity of the multilayer graphene

Nurses’ shift length and overtime working in 12 European countries: the association with perceived quality of care and patient safety

    No full text
Background: Despite concerns as to whether nurses can perform reliably and effectively when working longer shifts, a pattern of two 12- to 13-hour shifts per day is becoming common in many hospitals to reduce shift to shift handovers, staffing overlap, and hence costs. Objectives: To describe shift patterns of European nurses and investigate whether shift length and working beyond contracted hours (overtime) is associated with nurse-reported care quality, safety, and care left undone. Methods: Cross-sectional survey of 31,627 registered nurses in general medical/surgical units within 488 hospitals across 12 European countries. Results: A total of 50% of nurses worked shifts of <=8 hours, but 15% worked >=12 hours. Typical shift length varied between countries and within some countries. Nurses working for >=12 hours were more likely to report poor or failing patient safety [odds ratio (OR)=1.41; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.13-1.76], poor/fair quality of care (OR=1.30; 95% CI, 1.10-1.53), and more care activities left undone (RR=1.13; 95% CI, 1.09-1.16). Working overtime was also associated with reports of poor or failing patient safety (OR=1.67; 95% CI, 1.51-1.86), poor/fair quality of care (OR=1.32; 95% CI, 1.23-1.42), and more care left undone (RR=1.29; 95% CI, 1.27-1.31).Conclusions: European registered nurses working shifts of >=12 hours and those working overtime report lower quality and safety and more care left undone. Policies to adopt a 12-hour nursing shift pattern should proceed with caution. Use of overtime working to mitigate staffing shortages or increase flexibility may also incur additional risk to quality

    Cyberbullying among youth in Malaysia

    No full text
The purpose of this research was to survey the current situation concerning cyberbullying among youth in Malaysia. Specifically, this research aimed at finding out the prevalence of cyberbullying among youth based on demographic data and the common types of cyberbullying tactic. The survey method was adopted as the research design in which a set of questionnaire was developed to collect the data. A total of 1406 respondents were selected in this research. In general, the research findings reveal that majority of the respondents had been cyberbullied before. The Malays community yielded the highest percentage of cyberbullied victims. In addition, the result also shows that female cyber users were usually targeted as the cyberbully victim. The most common type of cyberbully tactic was through receiving offensive/ pornographic materials. Effective and pragmatic steps have to be taken in order to mitigate the cyberbullying problem among Malaysian youth

Fatigue crack growth in thin notched woven glass composites under tensile loading. Part I: experimental

    No full text
Helicopter blades are made of composite materials mainly loaded in fatigue and have normally relatively thin skins. A through-the-thickness crack could appear in these skins. The aim of this study is to characterize the through-the-thickness crack propagation due to fatigue in thin woven glass fabric laminates. A technological test specimen is developed to get closer to the real loading conditions acting on these structures. An experimental campaign is undertaken which allows evaluating crack growth rates in several laminates. The crack path is linked through microscopic investigations to specify damage in woven plies. Crack initiation duration influence on experimental results is also underlined

A discrete dislocation dynamics study aiming at understanding fatigue crack initiation

    No full text
We use discrete dislocation dynamics to build a model for fatigue crack initiation in a surface grain. Dislocations are modeled as line singularities in an elastic medium where they can be generated from pre-existing sources, glide or annihilate. The simulation reveals several features that can potentially give rise to fracture initiation. Three different potential areas of fracture—surface, grain interior and grain boundary—are found which correspond to those found in experiments. Comparison with experimental findings on crack nucleation is hampered by the computational expenses that limit the number of cycles that can be simulated.

Fatigue crack growth in thin notched woven glass composites under tensile loading. Part II: modelling

    No full text
Fatigue propagation of a through-the-thickness crack in thin woven glass laminates is difficult to model when using homogeneous material assumption. Crack growth depends on both the fatigue behaviour of the fibres and of the matrix, these two phenomena occurring at different time and space scales. The developed finite element model is based on the architecture of the fabric and on the fatigue behaviours of the matrix and the fibre, even if the pure resin and fibre behaviours are not used. That thus limits the physical meaning of this model. Basically, the objective of this simulation is to illustrate and to confirm proposed crack growth mechanism. The fatigue damage matrix is introduced with user spring elements that link the two fibre directions of the fabric. Fibre fatigue behaviour is based on the S-N curves. Numerical results are compared to experimental crack growth rates and observed damage in the crack tip. Relatively good agreement between predictions and experiments was found
