In the Sixties of the nineteenth Century Raffaele Pareto, as hydraulic engineer and soil remediation expert, played an important role in the administration of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Italian Kingdom. Because of his position he made many iand malarial areas in the Country territory.
In addition to technical reports about his activity in the Ministry, he also wrote the Lettere artistiche, serially published in the «Giornale dell’Ingegnere Architetto e Agronomo», wich he directed from 1860 to 1867. He describes cities and monuments encountered during one of the inspection travels, in 1865. These articles are an interesting synthesis, in which its knowledge as hydraulic engineer, combined with deep humanistic culture delineates a kind of 'art-historical geography', where Pareto blends scientific and technical observations with historical and artistic descriptions
