The Shaky Social Citizenship of Early-Career Independent Professionals: Work Transformation, Career and Life Uncertainty, Unrepresented Rights
The combination of a segmented and flexible labour market and a fragmented welfare system has given rise to an unprecedented risk of uncertainty for the new generation of independent professionals. Independent self-employment frequently conceals precarious working conditions, low wages and limited protection; tasks, knowledge, networking and creativity are deteriorating, with an evident decline in autonomy often leading to entrapment in poor occupational careers. A qualitative research, involving 72 early-career I-Pros in Milan, argues that the new generation of professionals is undergoing a crisis of social citizenship - since social integration through labour market inclusion, structured representation of interests, welfare protection, are lacking - and it is also showing a "culture of uncertainty'', a day-by-day approach to life and career. Beyond a group of fully integrated I-Pros, most professionals show to suffer from economic and work vulnerability as well as relational fragility, whereas the weakest part of interviewed I-Pros experiences social and professional vulnerability, strong isolation at work and renunciation of personal objectives

The authors reflect on some pervasive feature of contemporary work starting from the independent professionals, a paradigmatic figure of the contemporary capitalist system. Their flexibility and performativity, moulded on the logic of cognitive capitalism, are traits shared by a progressively growing portion of workers. The authors propose the investigation of steering media, taking up the reflections developed by Habermas and Gorz, and foucaultian apparatuses which shape the daily practices of work in order to explore the multiple forms of free work. The analysis of the metropolis conceived as a meta-apparatus and the analysis of significant steering media related to independent professionals are essential, according to the authors, to recognize the cracks of the dominant paradigm and possible spaces for counter-subjectivities
The article aims to assess potentialities and limits of trade unions and professional organisations supplying representation for independent professionals. Many of these professionals are experiencing particularly fragile social and working conditions: they are marginally included in the welfare system and face a radically changing labour market and a persistent economic crisis.
The analysis takes advantage of theoretical approaches in the field of Industrial Relations and Organizational Studies. The results of a recent research project on young professionals and the lack of representation are the starting point for the analysis of three case studies (ACTA, ReRePre, Board of Professions -CGIL); through focused interviews the organizational strategies, repertoires of actions and ongoing experimental coalitions are explored

Dimensions of precariousness: independent professionals between market risks and entrapment in poor occupational careers
This article deals with the multifaceted precariousness of independent professionals through a qualitative analysis based in the urban area of Milan (Italy) and supports the hypothesis that, at a more advanced stage of independent professionals’ careers, precariousness as a market risk should be enriched with the concept of ‘entrapment’ in vulnerable working paths and working and life conditions defining poor occupational careers. Entrapment can be considered as the long-lasting condition of a large and weak part of young-adult independent professionals beyond the first career stages.
Our fieldwork confirms the widespread fragmentation of careers and increasing difficulties in improving professional positions due to structural economic and organizational changes. The four career dynamics of independent professionals emerged from the qualitative analysis –successful, dynamic, entrapped, and temporary interrupted – show the main factors affecting career outcomes: career strategies play a main role, but social relations confirm to be crucial for job success in different forms, as professional networks, welfare support, and ‘local professional integration’
Appunti sulla fisionomia del Cavalca – autore
An analysis of the technical terminology used by Domenico Cavalca with respect to his activity of translating Latin texts in vernacular language demonstrates that the Preacher friar’s linguistic choices are extremely well pondered. Indeed, the author’s voice emerges in characteristic wordings such as ›tutto dì veggiamo‹ and ›per esperienza veggiamo‹, which refer to a concrete factual experience and hence to the everyday reality of his audience. The use of this kind of expression, which presents ties to the period’s scientific and rhetoric literature, and which appears also in Dante’s and Boccaccio’s prose, is particularly frequent in Cavalca’s last work, the ›Esposizione del Credo‹. In fact, this treatise proves to be of crucial importance for his self-constitution as a Dominican author. An analysis of the technical terminology used by Domenico Cavalca with respect to his activity of translating Latin texts in vernacular language demonstrates that the Preacher friar’s linguistic choices are extremely well pondered.
