    Impact of classical forces and decoherence in multiterminal Aharonov-Bohm networks

    Multiterminal Aharonov-Bohm (AB) rings are ideal building blocks for quantum networks (QNs) thanks to their ability to map input states into controlled coherent superpositions of output states. We report on experiments performed on three-terminal GaAs/Al(x)Ga(1-x)As AB devices and compare our results with a scattering-matrix model including Lorentz forces and decoherence. Devices were studied as a function of external magnetic field (B) and gate voltage at temperatures down to 350 mK. The total output current from two terminals while applying a small bias to the third lead was found to be symmetric with respect to B with AB oscillations showing abrupt phase jumps between 0 and pi at different values of gate voltage and at low magnetic fields, reminiscent of the phase-rigidity constraint due to Onsager-Casimir relations. Individual outputs show quasilinear dependence of the oscillation phase on the external electric field. We emphasize that a simple scattering-matrix approach cannot model the observed behavior and propose an improved description that can fully describe the observed phenomena. Furthermore, we shall show that our model can be successfully exploited to determine the range of experimental parameters that guarantee a minimum oscillation visibility, given the geometry and coherence length of a QN

    Electrical control of polariton coupling in intersubband microcavities

    We demonstrate the external control of the coupling between the intersubband transition and the photonic mode of a GaAs/AlGaAs microcavity with multiple quantum wells embedded. By electrical gating, the charge density in the wells can be lowered, thereby quenching the intersubband polaritons and reverting the system to uncoupled excitations. The angle-dependent reflectance measurements are in good agreement with theoretical calculations performed in the transfer matrix formalism. The experiment shows the prospects offered by intersubband microcavities through manipulation of the system ground state

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Magnetic field sensitivity of In0.75Ga0.25As Hall nanoprobes

    We have fabricated and characterized Hall probes on an In0.75Al0.25As/In0.75Ga0.25As two-dimensional electron gas with lateral sizes down to 100 nm. We studied the dependence of the low temperature (4 K) magnetic field sensitivity on the probe size, showing that the best flux sensitivity is achieved by devices of ≈200 nm, employing highly doped systems (n∼1012 cm−2). Hall bars with sizes down to the range of 200–250 nm show a magnetic field sensitivity of a few Gauss, corresponding to a flux sensitivity equal to ≈10−2Φ

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
