OTDM add-drop multiplexer based on time-frequency signal processing
A time-division add-drop multiplexer capable of high-extinction-ratio operation is presented both theoretically and experimentally. The approach used is based on time-to-frequency domain conversion of optical signals and relies upon the switching of linearly chirped optical pulses. By converting a 40-Gb/s optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) signal to 4 × 10-Gb/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) channels and using fiber Bragg gratings for frequency-domain add-drop multiplexing, a timeslot suppression ratio in excess of 30 dB and error-free operation for the dropped, through, and added channels were achieved. A further stage of WDM-to-TDM signal conversion was used to map the resulting signal back into the time domain. Moreover, it is shown that it is straightforward to simultaneously operate on multiple channels by simply cascading gratings to make more complex filtering functions without the requirement for any further synchronization of the tributary channels
Factor structure of the PAS-ADD Checklist with adults with intellectual disabilities
Background The PAS-ADD Checklist is designed to screen for likely mental health problems in people with intellectual disabilities (ID). The specificity of recommended subscales derived from diagnostic criteria is unclear. This paper therefore investigates the factor structure of the PAS-ADD Checklist to determine the adequacy of empirically derived subscales. Method A total of 1,115 informants who had known service users for a median of 24 months completed the PAS-ADD Checklist on 1,155 adults with ID living either in the community, in residential care, or in hospital settings in a county in North-East England. Results The sample was randomly divided into two, with all item scores dichotomised. An exploratory principal components factor analysis with varimax rotation was conducted on Subsample A, producing an optimal 7-factor solution. However, a confirmatory factor analysis using this factor structure for Subsample B revealed a mediocre to poor fit. Further exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses also indicated that empirically derived PAS-ADD Checklist subscales were inconsistent. Conclusion Given the inconsistency of empirically derived subscales, we do not recommend using the PAS-ADD Checklist to identify specific types of psychopathology. The Checklist may have more utility as a screening tool for general psychopathology and subsequent referral for more detailed assessment

Immigrants and electoral enrolment: Do the numbers add up?
Abstract: The electoral enrolment of immigrants is important for effective democracy. Electoral rolls also provide useful administrative data on the age, regional distribution, and intercensal movements of the eligible voting population. An understanding of the enrolment patterns of recent immigrants provides information on the political integration of a section of the permanent resident population, and the electoral roll’s coverage of this group. This paper presents findings on the political participation of recent immigrants to New Zealand, with a focus on their level of electoral enrolment. It uses data from the Longitudinal Immigration Survey: New Zealand (LisNZ), which asked panel participants who remained at wave 3 whether they were on the electoral roll and had voted. The overall electoral enrolment rate of participants was compared with that of the total New Zealand population, and their profiles examined to identify those characteristics associated with enrolment. Survey regression analysis was used to identify variables that were significantly related to electoral enrolment. Recent immigrants were considerably less likely to be enrolled than members of the total population, with 11.6 percent not enrolled after three years of permanent residence. The factors most significant for enrolment were region of origin, New Zealand citizenship, and overall satisfaction. Also significant were application category, marital status, and home ownership. With non-citizen permanent residents having full voting rights in New Zealand, and an annual target of some 45,000 new approvals, the under-enrolment of recent immigrants shows that the numbers do not add up and there needs to be further focus on increasing the political integration of recent immigrants to New Zealand
Add Control: plant virtualization for control solutions in WWTP
This paper summarizes part of the research work carried out in the Add Control project, which proposes an extension of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) models and modelling architectures used in traditional WWTP simulation tools, addressing, in addition to the classical mass transformations (transport, physico-chemical phenomena, biological reactions), all the instrumentation, actuation and automation & control components (sensors, actuators, controllers), considering their real behaviour (signal delays, noise, failures and power consumption of actuators). Its ultimate objective is to allow a rapid transition from the simulation of the control strategy to its implementation at full-scale plants. Thus, this paper presents the application of the Add Control simulation platform for the design and implementation of new control strategies at the WWTP of Mekolalde

Comorbid implications: how does ADD/ADHD affect college students vocationally and educationally?
Plan BThe prevalence of Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in college students and how it affects them vocationally and educationally was investigated. The research also explored underlying symptoms of comorbid or other related disorders that may impact vocational and educational environments as well as what accommodations may be needed for college students that have Attention Disorder. The affect and impact of ADD/ADHD was determined by randomly administering 248 surveys to students in classes at two universities: the University of Wisconsin-Stout and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Criteria used within the survey were directly taken from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4 th Edition, 1994). The results indicated that Depressive Disorder and Anxiety Disorder were more common among college students, than Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The results reflected that students who marked that they had been formally diagnosed with ADD/ ADHD, Depressive Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, Learning Disorder, and/or Traumatic Brain Injury also indicated symptoms of one or more of the other disorders mentioned. This showed that combidity exists. Another conclusion that this study revealed was that students who had not marked a previous diagnosis, checked many criteria for the various disorders focused on within this study
Prescribing by mental health nurses: the UK perspective
PURPOSE. This article aims to discuss the growth of mental health nurse (MHN) prescribing in the United Kingdom as an exemplar for readers to compare progress in their own countries and context. This study also aims to provide a historical overview of this process in the United Kingdom where MHNs prescribe safely and competently.
CONCLUSIONS. Finally, evidence has shown that MHNs with prescriptive authority are competent when prescribing when compared to psychiatrists.
PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS. Despite organizational barriers and educational concerns, MHN prescribing is becoming embedded in the healthcare context in the United Kingdo
Antiproteinuric effect of add-on paricalcitol in Fabry disease patients: a prospective observational study.
BACKGROUND:
Proteinuria is the predominant risk factor for renal disease progression in Fabry disease (FD). When urine protein excretion is controlled to 0.50 g/24 h persisting despite ERT and anti-RAS therapy titrated to maximum tolerated dosage.
METHODS:
Fifteen FD patients were selected and studied in the first 6 months of add-on oral PCT (1 μg/day) and, in order to verify the dependence of proteinuria reduction on PCT, 3 months after drug withdrawal.
RESULTS:
At baseline, proteinuria was 1.3 ± 0.6 g/24 h. Six months of add-on PCT significantly decreased proteinuria to 0.4 ± 0.3 g/24 h, with levels <0.50 g/24 h achieved in four patients at Month 1, six at Month 3, and in 12 by Month 6, in the absence of changes to BP and GFR. Proteinuria recovered to basal value after drug withdrawal.
CONCLUSIONS:
In conclusion, our study is the first evidence that PCT is effective in reducing proteinuria in FD patients in the presence of ERT and anti-RAS therapy.
