Applied Demography.
Social support networks of Italian couples
International research on individual behaviour has shown the importance of the network of relationships that bind the individuals to the people who are close to them. Mainly in those countries, such as Italy, where the welfare system and the national agencies are weak and unable to suitably support people facing difficulties, the network’s role can be substantial. For the Italian scenario, the 2003 and 2009 Multipurpose survey, “Famiglia e Soggetti Sociali” (FSS), carried out by ISTAT offers some challenges to measure the ego-centered social support networks of Italian couples along the different phases of family formation. Focusing on individuals aged between 18 to 44 years old living as couples, our research questions concern: • the characteristics of partners’ ego-social support networks; • the types of help couples receive from people outside the immediate family; • the effect of network typologies on the probability of receiving help in the household life course. First results show a narrow social support network. Slight differences in partners’ availability of resources also emerge. The couple’s network size or even only the female’s network size has a significant positive effect on the probability of receiving help. Nevertheless, relying on the male social support network reduces this probability
Measuring ego-centered networks from Italian multipurpose survey
International research on individual behaviour has shown the importance of the network of relationships binding the individual to the people who are close to their in everyday life.
The "social space" can take shape in family, friends, workmates, or neighbors. It can generate strong or weak ties that interact with individual choices and it can take the form of emotional support, instrumental support or social companionship.
For the Italian scenario, the "Famiglia e soggetti sociali" (FFS) survey of the Multipurpose Survey Program carried out by the National Statistical Agency (ISTAT) offers some challenges to measure egocentered networks and to jointly analyse individual behaviour in critical situation, even if surveys goals are not specifically oriented to network analysis. The survey is also part of a broad International Generations and Gender Program developed by UNECE.
Focusing our analysis on individuals aged between 18 and 44 ys living in couple in the 2003 and 2009 FFS surveys, we measure the size and typology of the potential egocentered social support network for male and female partner by combining items from individual questionnaire on the number of siblings, children, parents, other relatives, friends, neighbours; on frequency of contacts and on residential proximity. Analysis will be carried out by different phases of family formation in which young adults are involved along with insights on the kind of help they ask.
Further, a discussion on the questions format adopted in the FFS survey will be also provided as well as comparisons with different methods used in egocentered
Late maternal age and risk of congenital malformation
An Object Oriented Data Analysis of Tweets: the Case of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Object Oriented Data Analysis di Tweet: il caso del Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
The talk will focus on the problem of embedding human language complexities in the framework of Object Oriented Data Analysis, showing a novel application of these statistical techniques to textual data. Starting from the investigation of the vast literature dealing with natural language understanding, we will define a taxonomy of mathematical models aimed at embedding complex properties of text. Along the talk, we will also discuss the potentials of the statistical analysis of the content of social media messages to support the landscape design process, showing the results of the analysis of Tweets collected from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. This contributes to the conversation on the employment of Big Data analytical techniques to study the users perception of landscape
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Bias reduced estimation of a fixed effects model for Expected Goals in association football
In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the scientific evaluation
of association football. This paper addresses the issue of assessing the scoring
probabilities of shots, commonly named as Expected Goals, by specifying a suitable
generalized linear model. In particular, in order to account for different players abilities,
a fixed effects model is considered. This has the advantage of avoiding the potential
bias induced by endogeneity in a random effects specification. On the other
hand, it is well known that in fixed effects models standard likelihood inference is
not reliable, due to the large dimension of the parameter. Therefore, we propose to
estimate the model using Firth’s bias reduction method. Recent theoretical results
guarantee that bias reduced estimates are accurate even in this extreme scenario
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
