    No full text

Waldick Soriano e o mistério do brega

    No full text
This article analyzes the career of the singer Waldick Soriano and the impact of the music referred to as brega [tacky, out of taste] in Brazil. It narrates the beginning of his career, some of the artist\u27s hits and controversies in a period spanning from the 1950s - time of Juscelino Kubitschek\u27s presidency - to the military dictatorship in the 1970s, when Waldick was also censored. By taking cues from etymologists and historians the origin of the word brega is explained, and also the singularity of this musical style. The author also analyzes why brega music is unappreciated by the cultural elites of the country, and what distinguishes it from the so called MPB repertoire

BICA and Random Subspace ensembles for DNA microarray-based diagnosis

    No full text
We compare two ensemble methods to classify DNA microarray data. The methods use different strategies to face the course of dimensionality plaguing these data. One of them projects data along random coordinates, the other compresses them into independent boolean variables. Both result in random feature extraction procedures, feeding SVMs as base learners for a majority voting ensemble classifier. The classification capabilities are comparable, degrading on instances that are acknowledged anomalous in the literature

Some reptiles from Marsa El Brega, Libya (Reptilia: Chamaeleonidae, Gekkonidae, Phyllodactylidae, Lacertidae and Scincidae)

The terrestrial reptile fauna of Libya is under-documented due to limited research stemming from political instability. The author conducted fieldwork in Libya, specifically in Marsa El Brega, during two visits in 2013 and 2014. Out of the 25 species known from Libya's historic Cyrenaica province, 7 species were identified in the surveyed area

Penetration of amphotericin B in human lung tissue after single liposomal amphotericin B (AmBisome) infusion

The distribution of amphotericin B in lung tissue was studied in 18 patients with primary or secondary lung cancer who underwent thoracotomy and pulmonary resection. At different times before surgery the patients were treated with liposomal amphotericin B 1.5 mg/kg by i.v. infusion over 1h. Blood and lung tissue samples were collected during surgery (one subjects for each collecting time) and assayed for amphotericin B levels by HPLC. Due to surgical requirements, it was possible to obtain data from the 10th to the 25th h after the end of infusion. Plasma amphotericin B concentrations progressively decreased from 3.4 mcg/ml at the 10th h to 1 mcg/ml at the 25th h after the end of intravenous infusion. In lung tissue samples the lowest amphotericin B concentration (about 1 mcg/g) was observed at the 10th h, then a progressive increase was observed with the highest value (2.5 mcg/g) determined at the 25th h
