Boundless Venus: the Crossover of the Conscious and Unconscious in the Works of Haruki Murakami

    No full text
The objective of this thesis, Boundless Venus, is to examine consciousness in the works of the contemporary Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. Principally the discussion concerns itself with the unconscious, its conduits, its benefits upon the conscious; which lead to the transformation of the self and structure of the literature. Although the subject has been touched upon before, the conscious and unconscious have previously been examined as exclusive concepts in Murakami. This research will be looking at the recent change in the ‘crossover’ between these concepts, which makes the concepts no longer two mutually exclusive concepts but ‘inclusive concepts’. This is vital to understanding Murakami’s more recent works and the nature of his influence on literature. Boundless Venus explores the entire works of Haruki Murakami, principally his most recent novel 1Q84 (2011) and his novels Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (1991) and The Wind-up Bird Chronicle (1997). It approaches the work from a psychoanalytic and critical point of view and focuses on significant narrative techniques, character development, and themes such as sex, music, and dreams, used by Murakami to explore the relationship between the conscious and unconscious and to narrate the crossover between the two

‘More than the Sum of its Parts’: Popular Music, Gender, and Myth in Haruki Murakami’s Fiction

    No full text
The work of Haruki Murakami is riven through with references to music. Indeed, music was Murakami’s livelihood before he started writing novels, and the author has written various essays and books about jazz and has published a book-length conversation with classical conductor Seiji Ozawa, and jazz and classical music pervade in Murakami’s fictional works. Popular music, too, provides an important international narrative texture to Murakami’s fiction, yet less critical attention has been paid to this musical indebtedness. The intertexts provided in Murakami’s work by the frequent references to pop songs and bands provide the starting point for a consideration of gender constructions in Murakami; in his work, we discover, musical and gender identities are inextricable and often assume highly affective, mythic roles

The results of this study show that Haruki Murakami most often used simple, indicative sentences in the simple past tense and active voice

The theme for this research concerns the influence of George Orwell's classic and highly acclaimed novel 1989 on the novel of the popular Japanese author Haruki Murakami 1Q84. With the help of comparative and analytical research methods a more detailed research was done regarding main motifs that can be observed up in both of these literary works. This research was done because currently there has been an increasing interest about problems related to propaganda and different governing systems. This work also includes a closer look at the biographies and literary activities of both authors. In the second part of this paper, the text analysis and comparison is provided between the three main motifs that can be observed in both literary works – governing over a certain part of the society, the falsification of historic events and facts, and the reasons why the main heroes resist against the existing government system. The conclusions made during the writing of this paper show that even though Haruki Murakami was inspired by George Orwell’s novel 1984, the Japanese author has changed the borrowed motifs and had adapted them to fit his own individual and unique writing style and plot twists
