    Evidence for extended gaseous reservoirs around AGN at cosmic noon from ALMA CO(3 -2) observations

    Gaseous outflows are key phenomena in the evolution of galaxies, as they affect star formation (either positively or ne gativ ely), eject gas from the core or disc, and directly cause mixing of pristine and processed material. Active outflows may be detected through searches for broad spectral line emission or high-velocity gas, but it is also possible to determine the presence of past outflows by searching for extended reservoirs of chemically enriched molecular gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) around galaxies. In this work, we examine the CO(3 -2) emission of a set of seven z ~2.0-2.5 active galactic nuclei (AGN) host galaxies, as observed with ALMA. Through a 3D stacking analysis, we find evidence for extended CO emission of radius r ~13 kpc. We extend this analysis to the HST /ACS i -band images of the sample galaxies, finding a complex small-scale (r < 10 kpc) morphology but no robust evidence for extended emission. In addition, the dust emission (traced by rest-frame FIR emission) shows no evidence for significant spatial extension. This indicates that the diffuse CO emission revealed by ALMA is morphologically distinct from the stellar component, and thus traces an extended reservoir of enriched gas. The presence of a diffuse, enriched molecular reservoir around this sample of AGN host galaxies at cosmic noon hints at a history of AGN-driven outflows that likely had strong effects on the star formation history of these objects

    An investigation of the circumgalactic medium around z ∼ 2.2 AGN with ACA and ALMA

    While observations of molecular gas at cosmic noon and beyond have focused on the gas within galaxies (i.e. the interstellar medium, ISM), it is also crucial to study the molecular gas reservoirs surrounding each galaxy (i.e. in the circumgalactic medium, CGM). Recent observations of galaxies and quasars hosts at high redshift (z > 2) have revealed evidence for cold gaseous haloes of scale rCGM ∼ 10 kpc, with one discovery of a molecular halo with rCGM ∼ 200 kpc, and a molecular gas mass one order of magnitude larger than the ISM of the central galaxy. As a follow up, we present deep ACA and ALMA observations of CO(3–2) from this source and two other quasar host galaxies at z ∼ 2.2. While we find evidence for CO emission on scales of r ∼ 10 kpc, we do not find evidence for molecular gas on scales larger than r > 20 kpc. Therefore, our deep data do not confirm the existence of massive molecular haloes on scales of ∼100 kpc for these X-ray selected quasars. As an interesting byproduct of our deep observations, we obtain the tentative detection of a negative continuum signal on scales larger than r > 200 kpc, which might be tracing the Sunyaev–Zeldovich effect associated with the halo heated by the active galactic nucleus (AGN). If confirmed with deeper data, this could be direct evidence of the preventive AGN feedback process expected by cosmological simulations

    Spatially-localized time dependent solutions including turbulence and their interactions in 2D Kolmogorov flow

    In 2D Kolmogorov flow in small aspect ratio domains, spatially-localized solutions such as kink, traveling or time-dependent kink-antikink pars coexist. However, the conservation of the flow rate in the y direction strongly restrict combination of localized solutions and their positioning. We find that by adding a homogeneous flow U y their positioning is controlled and each of localized solutions including a spatially-localized chaos is isolated. Numerical results suggest that these isolated solutions can be elements constructing a whole flow

    Characteristics of overlap region in high-Reynolds number turbulent channel flow

    Direct numerical simulation of the fully developed turbulent channel flows have been carried out at the Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and the channel half width, 2000, 4000 and 8000. A hybrid 10th order accurate finite difference scheme in the stream and spanwise directions, and a second-order scheme in the wall-normal direction is adapted as the spatial discretization method. We observed the plateau profiles in the indicator function corresponded to the von Karman constant. Furthermore, second peak of streamwise pre-multiplied spectra were appeared in the same wall normal height, 300 < y+ < 600, in case of Re = 4000. Nevertheless, the effects of the lager than the channel half height scale on the streamwise turbulent intensity are fixed contributions without dependence on Reynolds number. These results suggested that the new streamwise vortexes are formed between buffer layer and outer layer with increasing of Reynolds number

    Muon spin relaxation and nonmagnetic Kondo state in PrInAg2

    Muon spin relaxation experiments have been carried out in the Kondo compound PrInAg2. The zero-field muon relaxation rate is found to be independent of temperature between 0.1 and 10 K, which rules out a magnetic origin (spin freezing or a conventional Kondo effect) for the previously observed specific-heat anomaly at similar to 0.5 K. At low temperatures the muon relaxation can be quantitatively understood in terms of the muon's interaction with nuclear magnetism, including hyperfine enhancement of the Pr-141 nuclear moment at low temperatures. This argues against a Pr3+ ground-state electronic magnetic moment, and is strong evidence for the doublet Gamma(3) crystalline-electric-field-split ground state required for a nonmagnetic route to heavy-electron behavior. The data imply the existence of an exchange interaction between neighboring Pr3+ ions of the order of 0.2 K in temperature units, which should be taken into account in a complete theory of a nonmagnetic Kondo effect in PrInAg2.This article is published as MacLaughlin, D.     La 'circunstancia' de 'Herederos y Pretendientes

    In June 2010, the Ortega y Gasset Foundation hosted a Conference about the “Spanish Philosophical Transition” in order to debate the book of Francisco Vázquez, La filosofía española. Herederos y Pretendientes. Una lectura sociológica (1963-1990), recently published. This paper is the author’s response to criticism raised in the Conference and to published reviews received by this book. First, the author summarized the argument of Herederos y pretendientes. Secondly he responds and takes into account the most important objections against the book’s hypothesis and methodology. Finally the author evaluates the favorable judgments received by the book and suggests the limits of the historian’s task.Fundación Ortega y Gasset-Marañó

    BACKGROUND The aims of this bibliometric study were to determine author self-citation trends in high-impact orthodontic literature and to investigate possible association between self-citation and publication characteristics. METHODS Six orthodontic journals with the highest impact factor as ranked by 2017 Journal Citation Reports were screened for a full publication year (2018) for original research articles, reviews, and case reports. Eligible articles were scrutinized for article and author characteristics and citation metrics. Univariable and multivariable negative binomial regression was used to examine associations between self-citation incidence and publication characteristics. RESULTS Medians for author self-citation rate of the most self-citing authors and self-citations were 3.03% (range 0-50) and 1 (range 0-19), respectively. In the univariable analysis, there was no association between self-citation counts and study type (P = 0.41), article topic (P = 0.61), number of authors (P = 0.62), and rank of authors (P = 0.56). Author origin (P = 0.001), gender (P = 0.001) and journal (P = 0.05) were associated with self-citation counts and in the multivariable analysis only origin and gender remained strong self-citation predictors. Asian authors and females self-cited significantly less often than all other regions and male authors. CONCLUSIONS Authors in orthodontics do not self-cite at a frequency that suggests potential citation manipulation. Author origin and gender were the only variables associated with citations counts. More bibliometric research is necessary to draw solid conclusions about author self-citation trends in orthodontic literature

    Overview of the Author Profiling Task at PAN 2013

    [EN] This overview presents the framework and results for the Author Profiling task at PAN 2013. We describe in detail the corpus and its characteristics, and the evaluation framework we used to measure the participants performance to solve the problem of identifying age and gender from anonymous texts. Finally, the approaches of the 21 participants and their results are described.The author profiling task @PAN-2013 was an activity of the WIQ-EI IRSES project (Grant No. 269180) within the FP 7 Marie Curie People Framework of the European Commission.
