Crater Depth after the Impact of Multiple Drops into Deep Pools
No full textMany studies have been devoted to single drop impacts onto liquid films and pools, while just a few are available about double drop or drop train impacts, despite the fact that the latter are more realistic situations. Thus, computational fluid dynamics with a volume-of-fluid approach was used here to simulate the impact of multiple drops into deep pools. The aim was to verify if multiple drop impacts significantly differ from single drops ones, and if the models available in the literature for the crater depth in the case of single impacts are reliable also for the multiple drop cases. After validation against experimental data for single and double drop impacts, simulations for four to 30 drops, with a diameter of 2.30 mm, impact velocities 1.0, 1.4, 1.8, and 2.2 m/s, and random initial positions in the domain were performed. The results showed that the time evolution of the crater depth for multiple impacts is similar to the single drop case during the inertial phase, while the following behavior is very different. Consequently, the available models for the maximum crater depth during single drop impacts can still predict the upper and lower bounds of the values of the crater depth during multiple drop impacts within 5% deviation

Severe air pollution links to higher mortality in COVID-19 patients: The “double-hit” hypothesis
No full textObjectives: In areas of SARS-CoV-2 outbreak worldwide mean air pollutants concentrations vastly exceed the maximum limits. Chronic exposure to air pollutants have been associated with lung ACE-2 over-expression which is known to be the main receptor for SARS-CoV-2. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between air pollutants concentration (PM 2.5 and NO2) and COVID-19 outbreak, in terms of transmission, number of patients, severity of presentation and number of deaths. Methods: COVID-19 cases, ICU admissions and mortality rate were correlated with severity of air pollution in the Italian regions. Results: The highest number of COVID-19 cases were recorded in the most polluted regions with patients presenting with more severe forms of the disease requiring ICU admission. In these regions, mortality was two-fold higher than the other regions. Conclusions: From the data available we propose a “double-hit hypothesis”: chronic exposure to PM 2.5 causes alveolar ACE-2 receptor overexpression. This may increase viral load in patients exposed to pollutants in turn depleting ACE-2 receptors and impairing host defences. High atmospheric NO2 may provide a second hit causing a severe form of SARS-CoV-2 in ACE-2 depleted lungs resulting in a worse outcome
Radical⋯radical chalcogen bonds: CSD analysis and DFT calculations
No full textThis manuscript reports a combination of crystallographic analysis (Cambridge Structural Database) and theoretical DFT calculations in chalcogen bonding interactions involving radicals in both the Ch bond (ChB) donor and acceptor. As a radical ChB acceptor (nucleophile) we have used benzodithiazolyl radical (BDTA) and as Ch bond donors (electrophile) we have used dithiadiazolyl and diselenadiazolyl radicals of the general formulap-X-C6F4-CNChChN (Ch = S, and Se). We have evaluated how theparasubstituent (X) affects the interaction energy, spin density and charge/spin transfer from the electron rich BDTA radical to the electron poor dichalcogenadiazolyl ring. The ability of the latter rings to form ChBs in the solid state has been examined by a comprehensive search in the CSD; several cases are used to exemplify the preferred geometric features of the complexes and they are compared with the theory. The molecular surface electrostatic potentials calculated for these ChB donors allow for a very precise rationalization of the self-assembly motifs most frequently adopted in the crystalline state and of their relative robustness
Anion⋅⋅⋅Anion Interactions Involving σ-Holes of Perrhenate, Pertechnetate and Permanganate Anions
No full textIn this communication experimental and theoretical results are reported affording strong evidence that interactions between electron rich atoms and the metal of tetroxide anions of group 7 elements are a new case of attractive and σ-hole interactions. Single crystal X-ray analyses, molecular electrostatic potentials, quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules, and noncovalent interaction plot analyses show that in crystalline permanganate and perrhenate salts the metal in Mn/ReO4− anion can act as electron acceptors, the oxygen of another Mn/ReO4− anion can act as the donor and supramolecular anionic dimers or polymers are formed. The name matere bond (MaB) is proposed to categorize these noncovalent interactions and to differentiate them from the classical metal-ligand coordination bond
