CROWDSS: A crowdsourced, ecologically-valid dialogue dataset for German
The CROWDSS dataset (Crowdsourced Wizard of Oz Dialogue dataset based on Situated Scenarios) contains 113 German dialogues collected in a Wizard-of-Oz fashion (i.e., simulating human-machine interaction).
To refer to CROWDSS in any publication, please cite the following paper:
Frommherz, Y. and Zarcone, A. (2021). Crowdsourcing ecologically-valid dialogue data for German. In Frontiers in Computer Science, Vol 3, doi: 10.3389/fcomp.2021.686050The dataset is structured as follows: Each dialogue is saved as a dictionary (with the dialogue id as key) containing 1) the scenario which was used for eliciting the corresponding dialogue and 2) the log.
The log is a list of turns made by user and assistant, where each turn again is a dictionary containing the actual turn ("text"), who uttered it ("role") as well as the corresponding dialogue act annotations, following the scheme in Pareti and Lando (2019) but with some modifications (see annotation guidelines). The dialogue acts are saved as a list with the label as well as the start and end indices in the text.
The dialogues were collected on a turn-by-turn basis and using a one-to-many ratio (see paper). The dialogue ids consist of numbers separated by dots. The first number corresponds to the the 30 dialogue beginnings that where collected in batch 1 (see paper). Since we assigned each of these dialogues to multiple participants in batch 2, dialogues sharing the first number in their id share both the same scenario and the first turn, etc
Thinking Things in German versus Swedish. A Cross‐Linguistic comparison of Verbs of Thinking in Two Genetically Close Languages.☆
464506Against the backdrop of universality proposals claiming that all languages share the conceptualisation and expression of THINKING, this study comparatively investigates verbs of thinking (VOT) in German and Swedish. Particularly, it examines semantic specificity in VOT (the restricted availability of only one verb in a certain context), and the potential effect of two constraints (intersubjective verifiability; subjectivity). A contextualised choice task was conducted where German (n = 30) and Swedish (n = 30) native speakers had to indicate which of four verb(s) (denken/glauben/meinen/finden; tänka/tro/tycka/mena) are meaningful in a certain context. The results suggest that the German domain of VOT is less semantically specific than the Swedish one. Moreover, they indicate that both languages are sensitive to the subjectivity constraint: they exclusively allow for one specific verb (finden/tycka) when the VOT frames an utterance expressing a subjective opinion/assessment/evaluation. However, when the VOT frames a statement that other interactants can test for its truth (intersubjective verifiability), only Swedish appears to show semantic specificity, allowing exclusively for tro. German does not appear sensitive to this constraint as both denken/glauben/meinen are available. The finding that even genetically close languages show striking differences in VOT casts doubt on universality proposals in the domain of VOT.76
Wave-front phase retrieval in transmission electron microscopy via ptychography
There are many different strategies that allow the solving of the well-known phase problem corresponding to the loss of phase information during a physical measurement. In microscopy, and, in particular, in transmission electron microscopy, most of these strategies focus on the retrieval of high-resolution information with the importance of lower resolution data often overlooked. Ptychography offers a means to investigate such data. Ptychography is a robust diffractive imaging technique with fast convergence for phase retrieval but, until now, has not been applied at the nanoscale. In this paper, we use the ptychographical iterative engine to retrieve the phase change at the exit plane of metallic nanoparticles using a conventional transmission electron microscope. Ptychographical reconstructions yielded images with a phase resolution of π/10 and a spatial resolution of 1 nm. These results stand as a first step toward aberration-free lensless imaging. The technique lends itself to be an alternative to off-axis electron holography or focal series reconstructio

Thinking things in German versus Swedish
Against the backdrop of universality proposals claiming that all the world’s languages share the way they conceptualise and express THINKING, this study investigates verbs of thinking in German and Swedish in a comparative perspective. In particular, it examines semantic specificity in verbs of thinking (the restricted availability of only one specific verb in a certain context), and the potential effect of two constraints (intersubjective verifiability and subjectivity). A contextualised choice task was conducted in which German (n = 30) and Swedish (n = 30) native speakers had to indicate which out four verb(s) (denken, glauben, meinen, finden, and tänka, tro, tycka, mena) are meaningful in a certain context. The results suggest that the German domain of verbs of thinking is less semantically specific than the Swedish one. Moreover, the data indicates that both languages are sensitive to the subjectivity constraint, that is, they exclusively allow for one specific verb (finden/tycka) in contexts where the verb of thinking frames an utterance expressing a subjective opinion/assessment/evaluation. However, in contexts where the verb of thinking frames a statement that can be tested for its truth by other interactants (intersubjective verifiability), only Swedish appears to show semantic specificity in exclusively allowing for tro. German does not appear to be sensitive to this constraint since both denken, glauben and meinen are available. The finding that even typologically related languages show striking differences in verbs of thinking casts doubt on universality proposals in the domain of verbs of thinking
Révisions transatlantiques : une expérience de télécollaboration entre l’Université Ca’ Foscari et Bentley University
The aim of this work is to present the ins and outs of a telecollaboration project between an American university (Bentley University) and Ca\u27 Foscari University. This project targets oral production and revision skills around an authentic language object, the video CV. Between March and April 2021, the author and a colleague from Bentley University set up a collaborative video CV revision project between 10 American FLE students and 13 students from Ca\u27 Foscari University of Venice, Italy (CEFR level B1-B2 for both groups). After a preparation phase started in December 2020 on both sides of the Atlantic, the device was implemented with work phases in synchronous and asynchronous modality. First, we will provide a theoretical framework concerning the use of telecollaboration mediated by computer for didactics of French as a foreign language. Then, we will go into more detail on the organisation, the setting up of the project and the modalities, the course of the exchanges and the tools used.
Law & Economics Perspectives on Electricity Regulation
This paper first reviews some of the main contributions of the new institutional economics to the analysis of the process of competitive transformation of network industries. It shows that neoinstitutional analysis is complementary to the microeconomics of rational pricing, since it accounts for the decisive role of an institutional framework adapted to new transactions. It emphasizes the importance of the political reform process, which draws on the conditions of attractiveness and feasibility to define an initial reorganization of property rights in these industries. The paper then analyzes in this light some of the main challenges ahead for electricity regulation: the question of investment in generation capacities and the link to long term contracts, the regulation of wholesale market power, the support to Renewable Energy Sources for Electricity (RES-E) and the design of new regulatory authorities.Electricity Markets; New Institutional Economics; Law & Economics
