The use of psychotropic drugs is a topic of continuing social explosiveness and great importance for social work. While the debate about the role of social workers in dealing with these drugs has been relatively intense in the USA for a long time and empirical data have been collected, the understanding of this issue in the German-speaking world leads a shadowy existence. Questions about professional self-image and competence requirements are dealt with briefly and essentially in relation to social psychiatric fields of work. The author presents the first results of a qualitative research project in the field of refugee assistance, with which first of all the nature of social work's involvement in the matter outside of 'clinical' work contexts is illuminated. Furthermore, both the importance of self-understanding about the professional role and the urgency of certain key competencies for this issue are highlighted. Finally, the author pleads for a medicalization-critical mainstreaming in order to do justice not only to the concerns of the social work clientele but also to the identity of the profession
systemischen Ansatzes heraus. On the relationship between critical psychology and ›systemic thinking‹ in relation to the possibility of theoretically grounding psychotherapy
In the essay, »systemic thinking« is presented as a young paradigm for psychotherapeutic concepts, in whose differentiation from other psychotherapeutic traditions the author recognises common points of reference with Critical Psychology. With the aim of identifying the theoretical core of systemic thinking, the historical development of the theory is discussed, the beginnings of which are seen in the work of Gregory Bateson. The cursory reconstruction of the approach aims above all to show to what extent it is theoretically coherent in systemic thinking to have developed an independent conception of psychotherapy in the narrower sense. A fictitious, historical case study of hysteria is used to further explicate and illustrate the differences between the theorisations of a psychopathological problematic in the sense of Freudian psychoanalysis, Critical Psychology and systemics, and to make the socio-historical conditions for the spread of systemic therapy practice since the 1970s recognisable. In the conclusion, the author highlights the tabooing of sociocritical truth or validity claims as a characteristic and core problem of the systemic approach
Do the categories of critical psychology offer starting points for the development of psychotherapeutic concepts?
The author explores the question of whether the basic concepts of Critical Psychology allow the development of psychotherapeutic ways of thinking as prototypically elaborated in the behavioural therapy and psychoanalytic traditions. To this end, he contrasts the subject-scientific theorisations of Lernen (Holzkamp, 1993) and the ontogenetic categories in the «Grundlegung der Psychologie« (Holzkamp, 1983) with the aforementioned psychotherapeutic ways of thinking. As a result, it becomes clear that Critical Psychology in its theoretical constitution is not compatible with psychotherapeutic conceptions. However, the question remains open whether a ›soft‹ reading of Critical Psychology is possible or even necessary, one that is more compatible with psychotherapeutic patterns of interpretation
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Subject-theoretical convergences of Critical Psychology and the “lifeworld orientation in social work”
The theory of “lifeworld orientation in social work” (LWO) and “Critical Psychology” are examined with regard to possible levels of reference. It is argued that the subject concept of Critical Psychology is inscribed in the LWO. In particular, the LWO would gain theoretical substance through the integration of Critical Psychology’s concept of the dynamic unconscious. Furthermore, certain theoretical problems of the LWO could be resolved by the inclusion of Holzkamp’s concept of the “everyday conduct of life”. Finally, it is discussed to what extent the metatheoretical self-understanding of the LWO is motivated by professional-theoretical and professional-political goals and how the possibilities of defining a relationship to Critical Psychology come up against the limits of diff erent subject areas
